Chapter 28 - chapter 26-the key begins to turn

The silence after the projection did not feel empty.

It felt watched.

As if the world had not stopped reacting—it had simply lowered its voice.

Zeal stood still at the edge of the shattered abyss.

The black and gold energy around him no longer surged.

It waited.

Like something inside him had been given instructions it didn't fully understand yet.

Chloe was the first to speak.

"…Zeal?"

Her voice was softer than before.

Careful.

Like she was afraid of breaking the version of him standing in front of her.

Zeal didn't look at her immediately.

His eyes were still fixed on the empty sky where the projection had vanished.

"…I'm still here."

It was simple.

But it didn't fully reassure anyone.

Lucius exhaled slowly.

The lightning around him dimmed, but didn't disappear.

"…That thing didn't attack."

Cain responded instantly.

"That wasn't an attack."

A pause.

"That was a scan."

Kyle sat down on a broken slab again.

"…I preferred the attacking version, honestly."

No one disagreed.

Far beneath them, the abyss shifted again.

But this time—

it didn't explode outward.

It tightened.

Like something deep below had been listening the entire time.

And now—

it had made a decision.

The First Dragon lifted his head slightly.

His silver eyes narrowed.

"…It has started moving."

Cain turned sharply.

"What has?"

The First Dragon answered slowly.

"…The response layer."

Seraphine's expression darkened.

"…Already?"

Zeal finally looked down.

"…What response layer?"

No one answered immediately.

Because the answer didn't sound like something they wanted to say out loud.

Then—

BOOOOOOOM.

A deep pulse hit the entire abyss.

Not from below.

From inside Zeal's body.

He staggered slightly.

Chloe immediately grabbed his arm.

"Zeal!"

For the first time—

the black and gold energy around him flickered violently.

Not reacting to danger.

Reacting to recognition.

Lucius stepped forward instantly.

"…It's syncing again."

Cain's eyes sharpened.

"Not syncing."

A pause.

"…Aligning."

Zeal clenched his fist.

"…With what?"

The Devourer's voice returned.

But quieter now.

Almost amused.

"You were never meant to stay isolated this long."

Zeal looked downward.

"…Stop talking like you know me."

The Devourer replied instantly.

"I know what you are becoming."

The abyss beneath them trembled.

And for the first time—

something began to rise.

Not chains.

Not light.

Not dragon.

Something new.

A structure.

It wasn't alive.

But it wasn't dead either.

It looked like fragments of a throne built from broken symbols and shattered authority marks.

As if reality itself had tried to construct something and failed halfway.

Kyle slowly stood up.

"…Why is the ground building itself?"

No one answered.

Because it wasn't building.

It was assembling.

Cain's expression darkened.

"…Authority construct."

Lucius frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Cain answered quietly.

"…Something is trying to form a control interface."

Zeal stared at it.

And something inside him reacted instinctively.

Not fear.

Recognition.

His hand moved slightly.

Not consciously.

Like his body remembered something before his mind did.

Chloe noticed immediately.

"…Zeal, don't touch it."

But he didn't move forward.

He was frozen.

Watching it form.

The structure rose further from the abyss.

Now clearly visible.

A fractured throne.

Not complete.

Waiting for missing pieces.

And then—

a single seat lit up.

BOOOOOOOM.

The energy inside Zeal responded violently.

His eyes flickered gold for a split second.

Lucius stepped forward.

"Zeal—step back!"

But Zeal whispered:

"…I've seen this before."

Silence.

Cain's eyes narrowed.

"When?"

Zeal hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

"…Not here."

A pause.

"…Somewhere I shouldn't remember."

The throne structure stabilized.

And then—

it spoke.

Not in voice.

Not in language.

In command signal.

"CORE FRAGMENT DETECTED."

The entire abyss froze.

Even the First Dragon went still.

Chloe stepped back slightly.

"…Core fragment?"

The structure responded again.

"SEAT PREPARATION INITIATED."

Lucius's eyes widened.

"…Seat?"

Cain's grip tightened instantly.

"Zeal—move away from it."

But Zeal didn't move.

Because something inside him had already reacted.

The black and gold energy around him began to rise slowly.

Not violently.

Not chaotically.

But drawn.

Like the throne was calling something inside him home.

The Devourer suddenly spoke again.

Louder now.

Sharpened.

"Don't let it complete the link."

Zeal frowned slightly.

"…Why?"

The Devourer's tone dropped.

Serious.

"Because if it seats you…"

A pause.

"You won't come back alone."

Silence.

Chloe grabbed Zeal's arm tighter.

"Don't listen to it."

Lucius stepped forward.

"Zeal, whatever that is—it's not you."

Cain added sharply.

"It's a trap."

The First Dragon spoke softly.

"…It is not a trap."

A pause.

"…It is a recall system."

That changed the air instantly.

Zeal whispered.

"…A recall system?"

The throne structure responded immediately.

"FRAGMENT PRIORITY: MAXIMUM."

The seat lit brighter.

The pull intensified.

And for the first time—

Zeal's feet moved forward slightly.

Not willingly.

Not fully.

Just a half-step.

Chloe tightened her grip instantly.

"Zeal—stop!"

His body paused.

Trembling slightly.

Like two forces inside him were pulling in opposite directions.

Lucius clenched his fists.

"…He's being pulled in."

Cain stepped forward.

"Then break the connection."

But the First Dragon's voice stopped him.

"…If you interrupt it forcefully…"

A pause.

"…You may fracture him further."

Silence.

Zeal's breathing slowed.

"…I don't understand what this is."

His voice was quieter now.

More human again.

"…But it feels like it knows me."

The throne answered immediately.

"WE REMEMBER YOU."

The abyss shook.

Zeal froze.

"…We?"

And for the first time—

the seat flickered.

Not alone.

Not empty.

But showing faint outlines of other seats.

Distant.

Scattered.

Across reality.

Chloe whispered:

"…There are more."

Cain confirmed quietly.

"…Monarch nodes."

Lucius looked toward Zeal.

"…So that projection wasn't just watching you."

A pause.

"…It was locating you."

The Devourer's voice softened again.

"Now you see."

The throne stabilized further.

The pull increased.

Zeal's hand slowly lifted.

Not fully controlled.

Not fully resisted.

Chloe's voice broke slightly.

"Zeal… don't go."

That line hit differently.

For a moment—

the energy around him flickered.

Like it hesitated.

Zeal whispered:

"…I'm not leaving."

A pause.

"…I just don't know what's pulling me."

Then—

BOOOOOOOOM.

The throne structure activated fully.

A single beam of light shot upward into Zeal's chest.

Not damaging.

Not destroying.

Connecting.

Cain shouted instantly.

"Break it—NOW!"

But it was too late.

Zeal's eyes widened slightly.

And for a split second—

he saw it.

Not the abyss.

Not the academy.

Not the present.

A vast system of thrones across existence.

Some active.

Some broken.

Some empty.

All waiting.

And one voice echoed through all of them.

Calm.

Final.

Familiar.

"Welcome back."

Zeal gasped.

And the connection snapped.

He fell to one knee instantly.

Breathing heavily.

The throne below shattered partially.

Not destroyed.

Interrupted.

Silence returned.

Chloe immediately knelt beside him.

"Zeal!"

Lucius stepped forward.

Cain lowered his sword slightly.

The First Dragon stayed silent.

Zeal lifted his head slowly.

His eyes were steady again.

But different.

Not changed.

Not possessed.

Just… aware.

"…I saw them."

A pause.

"…All of them."

Kyle muttered from behind.

"…I really need a less complicated school."

Far beneath the abyss—

something else responded to the broken connection.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And this time—

it began moving toward them.
