Chapter 452 - The Billion-Dollar Ink

….

[Los Angeles | Everleaf Press Headquarters]

Zephyr Oulworth stood on the pavement, craning his neck to look up at the towering structure in the middle of California sky.

At the very top, etched in elegant, unmistakable silver lettering, were two words:

Everleaf Press.

Zephyr let out a slow, wandering exhale.

Six years ago, he had been a man watching his life's work slowly crumble.

Everleaf Press had been a modest publishing house operating out of a cramped second-floor walk-up office.

Following a string of unsuccessful ventures, the company had teetered on the absolute brink of bankruptcy.

To make matters worse, his own health had rapidly declined, forcing him to step down and pass the crushing burden of a dying company to his daughter, Gwendolyn, who was fresh out of university.

He had handed her what many believed was a sinking ship, but Gwendolyn refused to let it sink.

Zephyr walked through the pristine, automated glass doors and into a lobby that looked more like a modern art museum than a publishing house.

The receptionist, recognizing the founder instantly, offered a warm, reverent smile and ushered him toward the private executive elevator.

As the elevator glided silently upward to the top floor, Zephyr couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale of the resurrection.

Everleaf wasn't just a publishing company anymore.

Thanks to its ties with LIE Studios, Crunchyroll, and MarvelDC Comics, it had evolved into a multi-billion-dollar multimedia empire handling worldwide distribution, premium comic adaptations, and lucrative merchandising deals.

The elevator doors chimed and parted, revealing the sprawling executive suite.

Maggie Hartwell was standing near a massive mahogany desk, reviewing a tablet. When she looked up and saw him, her eyes lit up.

"Mr. Oulworth!" she grinned, walking over to embrace him.

She had been with the company through its darkest days, functioning as a receptionist, manager, and friend when they couldn't afford proper staff. Now, she was the Senior Vice President of Operations, commanding a staff of hundreds.

"It is good to see you, Maggie." Zephyr smiled warmly. "Is she busy?"

"For you? Never." Maggie gestured toward the heavy double doors of the inner office. "Go right in. She's just reviewing the final quarterly reports from the Japanese launch."

Zephyr opened the door and stepped inside.

Gwendolyn was sitting behind the desk, framed by panoramic windows that offered a breathtaking view of the Los Angeles skyline. She looked up, and the sharp, formidable CEO instantly melted into a beaming daughter.

"Dad!" Gwendolyn stood up, crossing the room to hug him tightly. "You didn't tell me you were coming into the city today."

"I wanted to surprise you." Zephyr chuckled, holding her at arm's length to get a good look at her. "Besides, I heard the latest numbers from the Tokyo launch. I couldn't sit at home."

Gwendolyn's eyes sparkled as she gestured for him to take a seat.

She walked over to her desk, picked up a tablet, and joined him, pouring two cups of coffee.

"The Japanese launch of Half-Blood Prince was indeed our most successful venture

in East dad." Gwendolyn reported. "Because Regal translated the book himself, perfectly preserving the emotional cadence and cultural weight, the readers completely felt the difference. Every major bookstore in Tokyo reported empty shelves within hours."

Zephyr took a sip of his coffee, shaking his head. "It's hard to wrap my head around it sometimes. How many copies have we sold globally now?"

Gwendolyn tapped the screen of her tablet, bringing up the master ledger.

"As of this morning." she began, her tone shifting into crisp, professional pride. "Across all six volumes, the Harry Potter series has officially crossed four hundred million copies sold worldwide."

Zephyr actually choked slightly on his coffee. "Four hundred... million?"

"Yes." Gwendolyn smiled, turning the screen so he could see the staggering bar charts. "The total revenue generated purely from the publishing side has surpassed four point two billion dollars. It has officially become the fastest-selling book series in the history of literature. And we are rapidly closing in on becoming the most sold book series ever printed."

Zephyr leaned back against the leather sofa, the breath knocked out of him.

His mind drifted back to that first contract negotiation, remembering the terms his daughter had brought home for him to read.

Regal had refused any advance payment, instead requesting that the money be used to bump their initial print run from 5,000 to 6,600 copies. He had slashed his initial royalty rate to a mere 3% for the first 100,000 copies, gambling everything on a massive 20% cut for every copy sold beyond that.

"I remember thinking that boy was either the most arrogant writer alive, or completely insane." Zephyr murmured, a fond, disbelieving laugh escaping his lips. "We were terrified that 6,600 copies would sit rotting in a warehouse."

"He wasn't arrogant, Dad." Gwendolyn said softly, her eyes filled with deep affection for the man she was about to marry. "He knew exactly what he held in his hands. And he trusted us to deliver it."

Zephyr looked around the opulent office. "And because of that 20% backend, and his decision to keep the adaptation rights... he funded a cinematic empire."

"Which brings us to the second part of the quarterly review." Gwendolyn said, her smirk widening as she swiped to a new file on her tablet. "Because as astronomical as the publishing numbers are, the cinematic franchise Regal built into an untouchable global juggernaut."

Zephyr leaned forward, his business instincts fully ignited. "Show me."

Gwendolyn laid the tablet on the coffee table between them. The screen illuminated with the high-resolution posters of the five Harry Potter films released so far, alongside a meticulously organized financial breakdown.

"This is the current state of the Harry Potter film franchise, factoring in global box office gross and the finalized net revenues."

Gwendolyn explained, pointing to the first entry.

Zephyr stared at the final tally at the bottom of the screen:

====

[TOTAL FRANCHISE GROSS (5 Films): $5.82 Billion (Estimated)]

The room was completely silent for a long, heavy moment.

"Five point eight billion dollars." Zephyr whispered, the magnitude of the number almost impossible to fully comprehend. "In box office alone. That doesn't even account for the DVDs, the merchandise, the upcoming theme park..."

"No, it doesn't." Gwendolyn agreed quietly. "When you factor in the $9.4 billion Seraphia: The Infinite Realm theme park currently under construction, the AAA survival-horror video game in development at LIE Gaming, and the ongoing publishing dominance... Harry Potter is no longer just a story, Dad. It is unequivocally the single largest, most collected, and most financially dominant franchise in the history of the world."

Zephyr took his glasses off, rubbing his eyes.

He looked out the panoramic windows at the city below, trying to process the journey from a dusty, failing office to the absolute summit of global culture.

"I couldn't be prouder of you, Gwen," he said earnestly. "You saw the genius in him when the rest of the industry would have thrown his manuscript in the trash, built this company into a titan, navigated the chaotic waters of Hollywood, managed billion-dollar contracts, and stood your ground against the biggest sharks in the business."

Gwendolyn squeezed her father's hand tightly. "I had a good teacher, Dad."

Zephyr corrected gently. "I am more happy about the fact that you found a man who looks at you like you are the only magic in his world that actually matters."

Gwendolyn blushed slightly. "He is pretty wonderful, isn't he? Even when he is being an absolute, stubborn workaholic who forgets to sleep."

"That is the price of changing the world, I suppose." Zephyr chuckled, picking his coffee cup back up. "So, what is the madman plotting now?"

Gwendolyn rolled her eyes, though her smile never faded. "He is doing a lot…"

Zephyr threw his head back and laughed, a rich, booming sound that filled the opulent office.

"Never a dull moment with Regal Seraphsail."

"Never." Gwendolyn agreed, clinking her own mug against his. "To Everleaf Press, Dad. And to the magic that saved us."

"To the magic." Zephyr echoed.
