Chapter 483 - Filming [TTC] (2)

….

The red recording tally lamps flared to life above Soundstage 5.

Beneath the four-ton carriage, eight heavy pneumatic pistons gave a pressurized hiss. The entire sixty-foot steel train frame pitched twelve degrees to the left, instantly sending a violent shudder through the floorboards.

Inside the narrow corridor of Carriage 9, there was no room for hesitation.

"Roll sound! Camera A and B rolling!"

"Clapboard! Scene 48, Take 1… Mark!"

Clack!

"Action!" Regal's voice sliced through the comms like a razor.

The frosted glass door at the far end of the vestibule buckled under the mass.

Thirty infected performers, dancers and contortionists trained for weeks in grotesque, joint-popping physical theater, hurled their bodies against the plexiglass partition.

"Hold that line, Rock!" Regal commanded into his headset. "Don't back up an inch!"

Rock planted his boots against the rubber flooring.

His massive chest surged as he hit the sliding door with his full body weight, his duct taped forearms locking across the metal frame.

The impact produced a dull, bone jarring crack that vibrated straight through the camera track.

Through the safety glass, milky, cataract-clouded eyes stared back at him.

Fingers clawed frantically against the edges, fingernails scratching across the glass with an ear-splitting screech.

Beside him, Keanu squeezed into the twenty eight inch gap between the passenger seats and the luggage bulkheads, wielding a blunt steel pipe wrapped in friction tape.

Behind Keanu, a young actor playing the high school baseball player gripped an aluminum bat, trembling with genuine adrenaline.

"Now! Break the seal!" Regal called out.

Rock roared, a raw, guttural sound tearing straight from his diaphragm, and threw the sliding door open just six inches.

The first infected performer lunged through the gap at a violent, neck-snapping angle.

Taking Regal's direction to heart, Rock didn't hesitate.

He loaded his hips and drove his taped right fist forward with genuine, bone crushing torque.

But the stunt performer misjudged the sheer speed and mass behind the blow, diving forward an inch too low and right into the strike's lethal apex.

At the video village, Regal's breath caught in his throat.

Through the monitor, the danger was obvious. If that strike connected cleanly with that much kinetic force, it wouldn't just sell the hit, it would shatter the performer's jaw.

In a fraction of a millisecond, Rock sensed it.

Despite his massive frame, his reflexes were razor sharp.

At the absolute edge of impact, Rock twisted his wrist, opening his fist and shaving off eighty percent of the devastating momentum.

What was meant to be a direct piston blow seamlessly morphed into a sweeping, open palm collarbone check.

He absorbed the stuntman's dive, using the man's own forward momentum to violently whip him backward into the snarling pack.

On camera, the violence looked staggering and brutal, yet the stuntman flew cleanly into his breakfall without a broken bone.

The camera operator, harnessed to an overhead bungee track running down the center of the ceiling, floated inches from Rock's shoulder, capturing every tremor of sweat and muscle.

Keanu immediately stepped into the breach, driving his pipe down to clear the threshold.

"Move! Push through!" Keanu shouted, his voice cracking with the frantic desperation of a father whose child was trapped three cars down.

"I am leading! You cover the rear!" Rock bellowed back, shoving another infected extra against the seat frame.

Without missing a beat, he locked eyes with Keanu during the brutal reset between blows. "You're a fund manager, aren't you?! Then you know all about throwing people away when they're no longer useful!"

"Just keep moving!" Keanu snarled, ducking under a flailing arm and driving his shoulder forward to wedge the next partition open.

"Cut! Cut, cut, CUT! Kill the hydraulics! Hold the floor!"

Regal's voice tore through the stage PA like a siren.

Beneath the carriage, the heavy pneumatic pistons groaned as the pressurized air vented in a violent whoosh, dropping the entire sixty-foot train flat onto its dampers.

The harsh, fluorescent work lights instantly flickered on overhead, shattering the dark, suffocating illusion of the apocalypse.

Inside the narrow corridor of Carriage 9, total chaos erupted.

The horde of thirty contortionists and zombie extras instantly broke character, tumbling over one another to give space.

Murmurs and sharp intakes of breath rippled through the pack.

"Holy shit, did you see that?"

"The wind off that punch almost took his wig off..."

On the floor, nestled among the pile of fake blood and foam rubber, the lead stunt performer sat up slowly.

His milky-white contact lenses widened with pure shock as his chest heaved in ragged gasps, one hand clutching his taped shoulder while his heart hammered against his ribs.

Regal ripped his headset around his neck and stormed straight through the vestibule door, the stunt coordinator trailing half a step behind with a medic kit.

"Leo! Talk to me!" Regal barked, eyes darting over the performer. "You intact? Is anything fractured?"

Leo let out a breathless, trembling laugh, shaking his head as the adrenaline finally began to recede.

"I am... I am good. Whole, and totally intact." He looked up at Rock, who was standing like a silent stone pillar, breathing steadily. "Boss... I swear to God I saw my entire life flash before my eyes. I dove too shallow into the strike pocket."

Leo reached up, tapping Rock's massive forearm with genuine reverence. "Rock... man, thank you. If you hadn't killed the torque on that swing at the last second, my jaw would be somewhere in Carriage Ten right now."

Rock extended a hand the size of a dinner plate, effortlessly hoisting the stuntman back onto his feet with a single pull.

"You moved half a second faster than the rehearsal tempo, brother." Rock said, his voice calm, grounded, but leaving no room for debate. "Never crowd into the strike zone. If I don't catch you, the follow-through won't stop."

Keanu leaned against the luggage rack, wiping a mixture of real sweat and theatrical grime from his forehead, letting out a low whistle. "That was inches, man. Literally inches."

Regal glanced down at the handheld wireless monitor in his grip, rewinding the playback by three seconds.

The shot was electrifying, a blur of raw, terrifying violence that looked completely lethal while still catching the split-second redirection that kept the performer's bones intact.

A sharp grin cut across Regal's face, though his tone stayed strictly business.

"It looks ungodly on camera." Regal announced to the entire carriage. "Brutal, unauthentic, and terrifying. But nobody dies for a frame on my set. Medic team, check Leo's collarbone for bruising. Everyone else, take five, drink water, and reset the door partition. We run it again from the breach, and watch your strike angles this time!"

In the background the pneumatic rams hissed down, leveling the carriage with a soft mechanical thud.

The thirty infected extras instantly broke character, slumping onto the passenger seats and gasping for breath, shaking out their contorted shoulders and wrists.

"Medics and water, on the floor now!" Gavin's voice echoed across the stage.

The young PA scrambled into the carriage carrying two flats of cold bottled water and ice packs, expertly dodging optical cables and crane tracks–

"Team Alpha, fantastic fall on that seat edge! Here's ice for that elbow. Stunt double two, makeup needs a touch-up on your left temple prosthetic!"

As the crew scrambled to reset the props and the medic dabbed an ice pack against Leo's neck, Regal slowly lowered the wireless monitor.

The image on the small screen was paused on a single, terrifying frame: Rock's forearm flexed like a forged iron girder, mere millimeters from the stuntman's nose, with enough displaced kinetic wind visibly fluttering the collar of Leo's costume.

A sudden, chilling realization hit Regal right between the eyes.

Regal stared at the freeze-frame, then slowly tilted his head up toward the mountain of muscle standing beside him.

Rock was politely sipping from a comically tiny paper water cup, his expression calm, attentive, and completely devoid of malice.

He hadn't been insecure during rehearsal, he had been trying to issue a safety warning.

Regal rubbed his temples, letting out a long, wheezing breath that was half-laugh and half-prayer of thanksgiving.

He stepped in close and tapped Rock's taped bicep with the corner of the monitor. "Rock."

"Yes, Boss?"

"You know earlier... when you asked if you should pull your hits to thirty percent?"

Rock nodded earnestly. "Yes. You told me the performers were world class gymnasts trained to absorb high impact falls."

"Right. Well, I would like to officially amend my directorial guidance." Regal said, his voice dropping into a deadpan whisper. "Forget fifty percent or thirty percent. From this moment on, Marcus punches at a strict, non negotiable fifteen percent capacity. In fact, if you could just aggressively wave a heavy breeze in their general direction, the Foley department will do the rest in post."

Rock blinked, genuinely considering the physics. "Fifteen percent might look a little soft on the high speed shutter, Boss. Lady Gwen says when I hold back too much, I look like I am swatting a butterfly."

"I don't care if you look like you're serving them afternoon tea, Rock!" Regal whispered back, struggling to keep a straight face. "Leo just met his ancestors in the middle of Carriage Nine! The man saw the pearly gates before you pivoted your wrist!"

Keanu, who was leaning against the partition nursing a sports drink, choked on his water and quickly turned away, his shoulders shaking with silent laughter.

Rock looked over at the grateful stuntman, who was giving him a two handed thumbs up from the bench, and then turned back to Regal with that same disciplined, unshakeable nod.

"Understood, Boss. Fifteen percent."

Regal muttered, patting the giant's arm. "Now get back to the door before our insurance reps materialize out of thin air."

He walked over to Keanu, who was practically bent double over a seatback, coughing into his towel while wiping tears of laughter from the corners of his eyes.

Regal crossed his arms, staring down at him dryly. "You having a good time over here?"

"Man…" Keanu held up a hand, trying and failing to catch his breath. "Watching you try to haggle down a punch discount with a living freight train? That was wild, Regal. Pure poetry."

"Glad my impending nervous breakdown is your matinee entertainment."

"Hey, rule of the road, man." Keanu said, his voice dropping into that familiar, laid-back cadence, eyes crinkling at the corners. "Any life-threatening situation you actually survive automatically becomes a joke the second your heart starts beating again."

Regal chuckled under his breath, shaking his head before his posture shifted, the relaxed banter smoothly giving way to sharp director instincts.

"Alright, smartass. Now take that little survival instinct you just discovered and put it into the scene." Regal leaned against the bulkhead beside Keanu. "Right after the breach, when Marcus calls Elliot out for being a fund manager, don't fire back immediately."

Keanu's smile faded slightly as he listened, the blunt steel pipe still turning slowly between his fingers.

"The accusation should sink in first." Regal continued. "Elliot has spent his whole life sitting comfortably behind a desk, moving money around and cutting people loose whenever the numbers told him to.

"Now everything he built his life around is gone, and he's standing behind a working class man who's taking the hits to keep his daughter alive. I want you to let that realization hit him for a second before the instinct to survive kicks back in."

Keanu went quiet for a beat, nodding slowly as the weight of the note settled behind his eyes.

"Yeah... yeah, I feel that." Keanu said, his tone turning grounded and introspective. "It's that bitter taste in your throat. He holds up a mirror, and for half a second, the reflection makes you sick before the adrenaline kicks the door down."

"Yep…" Regal said, tapping Keanu's shoulder. "Shame first, and survival second."

Keanu tightened his grip on the pipe, his whole presence shifting from easygoing friend back to desperate father. "I got you, man."
