Ella blinked several times. Her eyes remained fixed on her father, unable to make sense of what she was seeing. The man sitting before her looked nothing like the father she remembered.
A strange feeling of dread crawled through her chest. "Dad?" Her voice came out surprisingly steadier than she felt. "Why..." She swallowed. "What's wrong?" She stepped farther into the room.
Eric's expression changed. "Why are you here?" He frowned. "Did Martin call you?" He questioned. Just last night, Martin had once again brought up the suggestion of him letting Ella know of his health situation, and he had refused. 'Did he go behind my back to call her?' He wondered.
Ella stared at him. "Why are you like this, Dad?" She ignored his question completely.
Seeing her confused look, Eric realized Martin might not have called her home. He gave a small laugh, desperately trying to make light of the situation. "It's nothing, sweetheart. The doctors are already treating me."
