Chapter 38 - chapter 38

Chapter 38:the recognition of soul

She moved like a flame trapped in silk. There was no aggression in her dance, no forced seduction. She swayed with a heartbreaking grace, her fingers trailing along the crimson fabric of her dress as if she were mourning something lost. But it wasn't the dress that stopped Liam's heart. As she turned, the spotlight caught the edges of the red lace mask, and for one blinding second, her eyes locked onto the shadows where he sat.

The scotch glass nearly slipped from Liam's hand. Those eyes. They weren't the eyes of a performer looking for a tip. They were amber, flecked with gold, and filled with a raw, haunting depth that he had seen only once before—under the harsh fluorescent lights of a bistro, filled with tears of gratitude. The way she tilted her head, the slight, nervous tremor in her hands as she reached for the pole—it was all a perfect echo of the waitress.

It can't be, Liam thought, his pulse suddenly thundering in his ears. The coincidence was too vast, the worlds too far apart. But as he watched her move, the "Iceman" felt the first true crack in his armor. He wasn't looking at a dancer anymore; he was looking at a mystery that demanded to be solved. He didn't realize he had stood up slightly, leaning out of the shadows, his entire existence narrowed down to the girl in red and the golden fire in her eyes.

Eliana poured every ounce of her soul into the movement. She wasn't dancing for the men in the shadows; she was dancing for the invoice tucked into her bedside drawer and the oxygen tank hum in her mother's room. She kept her chin tilted up, her gaze fixed on the ornate crown molding of the ceiling, just as Mimi had taught her. Never look them in the eye, Eli. If you don't see them, they can't own you. She moved like a crimson ribbon caught in a gale, her silk dress fluttering against her thighs as she transitioned from a slow sway to a more intricate, demanding series of spins.
