Ayumi was now at the Renkonan household, sitting quietly in front of the TV as she watched Zaboru performing with his new band. At first, she felt proud—genuinely proud—seeing her husband standing confidently on stage, surrounded by lights and music, doing what he loved. A soft smile even formed on her face as she watched him.
But then… the song started.
It was a new song. She had never heard it before.
"She's Gone."
And the moment the lyrics began to sink in, Ayumi's expression slowly changed. The color drained from her face, her fingers tightening slightly as she stared at the screen.
'W.h… why would Zabo make a song like that…? I-is… is he disappointed in me?'
Her thoughts started to spiral.
She couldn't help it. Earlier today, the two of them had a small "fight." It wasn't anything serious… at least, that's what she thought at first. Yesterday, she had been waiting all day to eat her favorite purin pudding—a small thing, but something she was really looking forward to. She had even saved some for their child.
But when she finally went to get it… it was gone.
And the culprit?
Zaboru.
Ayumi had scolded him for it. Not harshly, but still firmly, because this wasn't the first time. Zaboru had always been like this—when it came to food, his self-control was… questionable.
So, as a small punishment—half serious, half teasing—she refused him intimacy that night.
It wasn't real anger.
She was never truly mad at him.
She was just teasing him… like she always did.
But now, watching the performance, hearing the emotion in that song…
Her heart began to waver.
'Did I… go too far…?'
Her eyes trembled slightly.
'…Does Zabo actually hate me now…?'
'I…is Zabo… really starting to hate me now…?' The thought hit her harder the more she tried to ignore it. Ayumi quickly grabbed her phone and tried to call Zaboru, but of course there was no answer—he was still live on TV, still performing, still pouring his emotions into that song that now made her chest tighten.
She lowered the phone slowly, her hands trembling just a little. The silence in the room felt heavier than before, and the sound from the TV only made her thoughts spiral further.
'Why… why did I think it was just teasing… what if he really took it seriously…?'
Ayumi bit her lip, trying to steady herself. Sitting still like this only made it worse.
So she stood up, forcing herself to move. She tried to distract herself—tidying small things around the room, adjusting objects that didn't need adjusting, anything to keep her mind from going back to that same thought. But no matter what she did, her attention kept drifting back to the TV, back to Zaboru's voice.
In the end, all she could really do… was wait.
Wait for her husband to come home from the live performance… and hope that everything was still okay.
Meanwhile Sunday Night 1 Nov 2000.
Zaboru was now in his car, driving back home after finishing the performance with Zaraki. The adrenaline from the stage was still lingering in his chest, but his thoughts had already shifted to something much simpler—home. On the passenger seat sat several boxes of purin pudding, carefully bought on his way back. He had taken more than usual, making sure there would be enough for everyone—Ayumi, the kids, and even his parents.
He let out a small chuckle, tapping the steering wheel lightly as he drove. He knew they had been a little upset with him, especially after he shamelessly ate the pudding that wasn't even meant for him yesterday. It wasn't a big issue… but still, he understood he needed to make it up to them properly this time.
"Well… I hope Ayumi won't be mad anymore… hehehe," he muttered to himself, a relaxed grin forming on his face. "Though I know she's not really mad… she's just teasing me."
He paused for a second, remembering her expression earlier, then laughed quietly. "Damn… my wife is so hot."
Zaboru shook his head slightly, still smiling, as he continued driving through the quiet night, completely unaware of the misunderstanding waiting for him at home.
Zaboru stepped into the Renkonan household and called out, "I'm home!" The moment his voice echoed, two small figures rushed toward him. Zenshin and Arumi ran straight to the entrance, their energy filling the space instantly. "Papa! Welcome back! Whoa—Papa, is that purin pudding!?" Arumi's eyes sparkled with excitement as she pointed at the boxes, while Zenshin's gaze lit up more quietly, but just as eagerly. Zaboru chuckled, lifting the bags slightly. "Yeah, these are all for you—the best purin pudding in the whole universe!" Arumi's eyes widened even more. "Whoa! Universe? That's so cool!" Meanwhile, Zenshin snorted lightly. "That's so exaggerated, Papa."
Zaboru let out a dramatic sigh and reached out to pat Zenshin's head. "Ugh… my Zen-chan is already so big he doesn't even enjoy Papa's jokes anymore." Zenshin frowned slightly, clearly annoyed, but he didn't pull away. He just accepted the headpat quietly, as if used to it. Then Arumi quickly jumped in, raising her hands. "Papa! Rumi wants headpats too!" Zaboru laughed softly and placed his hand on her head as well. "Of course. My princess deserves VIP headpats."
For a moment, the atmosphere completely shifted into warmth. Zaboru crouched slightly, letting both of them cling to him as he ruffled their hair and played along with their excitement.
Then Zaboru handed out the purin pudding to his dad and mom as well, and to Sanika too, making sure everyone got their share. The mood stayed light for a moment as the kids happily focused on the dessert, but as Zaboru glanced around, he suddenly realized something was missing. "Huh… Mom… where is Ayumi?" he asked, his tone shifting slightly.
Keiko let out a small sigh, her expression soft but a little concerned. "She's in your room. She's been waiting for you… for quite a while." She paused for a second, then added more quietly, "Honestly, Zaboru Renkonan… what did you do to her? Why does she look so sad?"
Zaboru's eyes widened immediately. "Huh? What… sad?" His mind went blank for a moment, completely caught off guard by that word.
Keiko gave him a knowing look but didn't press further. "Anyway, go meet her first. Whatever it is, you should handle it yourself. Let me take care of the kids for now."
Zaboru nodded quickly, his expression turning serious as he set the remaining pudding aside. "Yeah… okay." Without wasting another second, he turned and headed toward their room, a faint uneasiness beginning to settle in his chest.
Then Zaboru slowly opened the door to their room, and the moment he stepped inside, his movement froze. There, sitting on the edge of the bed, was Ayumi—quietly crying, her shoulders trembling as she held their wedding photo tightly against her chest, as if it was the only thing keeping her grounded.
For a brief second, Zaboru couldn't process what he was seeing. His eyes widened, disbelief flashing across his face as the image in front of him didn't match anything he expected. The room felt heavy, filled with a silence that carried too much emotion.
"…Ayumi…?"
Without thinking any further, he quickly approached her, his steps soft but urgent, his heart tightening as he realized just how serious this situation had become.
"Ayumi… what's wrong?" he said softly, his voice careful as he reached out to her while she was sobbing. Ayumi slowly lifted her face, her eyes red and wet, and the moment she saw him clearly, her tears only grew heavier. "Z… Zabo… I'm… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry, Zabo… please… please don't leave me…" her voice broke between each word, her hands clutching his shirt tightly. "I won't… I won't get mad at you again… I won't tease you like that anymore… please, Zabo… please forgive me…"
Her body trembled as she leaned toward him, as if afraid he might disappear if she didn't hold on. Every word she said was filled with fear, not anger, not pride—just pure desperation. It was clear she had been holding this in ever since the song ended, letting her thoughts spiral into something far worse than reality.
Zaboru could feel it immediately—the misunderstanding, the fear, the weight she had been carrying alone. And seeing her like this… it made his chest tighten.
Zaboru's eyes widened, completely caught off guard by her words. "What are you saying…? Why would I ever leave you, Ayumi?" His voice was firm but gentle as he immediately held both of her hands, grounding her. "I love you. The only way I leave you… is if I'm dead, Ayumi. That's it. Nothing else."
He leaned slightly closer, his expression softening as he looked directly into her teary eyes. "Hey… calm down. Talk to me. Tell me what happened."
Ayumi nodded weakly, still trembling, her grip tightening around his hands as if she was afraid he might disappear. She took a shaky breath, trying to gather her thoughts between sobs, then slowly began to explain.
She told him everything—how she heard the song, how the lyrics felt too real, how she thought it was about her, about their fight, about her getting mad at him. The more she spoke, the more her voice cracked, as if saying it out loud only made it feel more real.
"I thought… I thought you made that song because of me… because I got mad at you… I thought… you were tired of me…" she whispered, her voice barely holding together.
Zaboru froze for a second, completely flabbergasted. The realization hit him immediately—this wasn't just a small misunderstanding, this was something that had been building inside her the entire time. He let out a slow breath, then gently caressed her head, trying to calm her trembling.
"Hey… hey, you've got it all wrong, Ayumi…" his voice softened even more, almost like he was afraid of hurting her further. "That song… 'She's Gone'… it's for Kingo. He messed up again, you know… hurt his girlfriend and now he's regretting everything. That's what the song is about. Not you."
He leaned closer, making sure she could see his expression clearly, his eyes steady and sincere.
"Honestly, Ayumi… I will never, never, ever be mad at you like that. Not for something like this. Not for being you."
Zaboru gently cupped her face and kissed her cheeks, wiping away her tears with his thumb, careful and patient.
"So… I'm sorry, okay? I didn't think this would make you feel like this. I should've told you earlier… that's my fault."
Ayumi sniffed, still sobbing softly, her voice shaky and unsure. "So… it's not a song… for me…?"
Zaboru shook his head immediately, without even a hint of hesitation. "No way, Ayumi. Not even close. There's no world where I'd make something like that about you."
He gave a small, reassuring smile, his hand still resting gently on her head.
"If I ever write a song about you… it won't be about losing you. It'll be about how lucky I am to have you."
Ayumi kept sobbing as she threw herself into Zaboru's arms, hugging him so tightly it was as if she was afraid he might disappear the moment she let go. "Huaaa… thank God… thank God! I thought… I thought you were going to divorce me…" Her voice trembled, breaking between breaths as relief finally replaced the fear she had been holding.
Zaboru didn't pull away. He wrapped his arms around her instead, holding her firmly, letting her cry everything out without interruption. "Hey… it's okay. I'm here," he murmured softly, one hand gently stroking her hair in a slow, calming rhythm.
Ayumi continued to cry against his chest, her grip only loosening when exhaustion began to take over. The tension in her body slowly faded, her breathing becoming uneven but quieter, until eventually she fell asleep right there in his arms.
Zaboru let out a small, warm chuckle as he carefully adjusted his hold, making sure not to wake her. He gently lifted her and laid her down on the bed, pulling the blanket over her with care. For a moment, he just looked at her—her face still slightly damp with tears, but now peaceful.
He leaned down and kissed her softly on the cheek. "There's no chance we'll ever divorce, Ayumi… I love you too much for that," he whispered, his voice low but filled with certainty.
After making sure she was comfortable, Zaboru quietly stood up and walked toward the door, turning off the light before stepping outside, leaving her to rest.
When he stepped outside the room, he immediately froze for a moment. Right there, just a few steps away from the door, stood his father, mother, sister—and even his kids—all suspiciously close, as if they had been listening the entire time. The moment the door opened, they all quickly tried to act natural and dispersed in different directions, though it was far too obvious.
Zaboru let out a long sigh, rubbing his forehead slightly. "...What are you guys doing?" he asked, his tone half tired, half amused.
Zanichi crossed his arms casually, completely unfazed. "Not really. I was just… checking the door," he said as if it made perfect sense.
Sanika immediately nodded along, trying to back him up. "Yeah, yeah! I was just helping Father check the door!" she added, though her voice betrayed how unconvincing that sounded.
Keiko, on the other hand, didn't even bother hiding it. She simply grinned widely, clearly entertained. "Hehehe… well, it looks like everything worked out," she said cheerfully, glancing toward the closed room. Then her gaze shifted to the kids. "Zen-chan, Rumi-chan… it seems like you might have a sibling before long~"
Arumi, who was happily eating her pudding, immediately lit up, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Sibling? Yay!" she said without hesitation, completely embracing the idea.
Zenshin, however, blinked and frowned slightly, trying to process it more seriously. "Wait… already?" he muttered under his breath, though even he couldn't fully hide his curiosity.
Zaboru stared at all of them for a second, completely speechless, before letting out another sigh—this time with a faint smile. "You guys really have nothing better to do, huh..."
Zaboru let out a soft chuckle, the tension from earlier finally fading away, and then he returned to the living room to spend more time with his family. The atmosphere was warm and lively again—his children still excited over their pudding, his parents chatting casually, and Sanika teasing here and there. For Zaboru, moments like this were simple, but they meant everything.
