With a smooth, practiced motion, Antonio threw the massive double doors wide open. The crisp, biting winter air rushed in, carrying the mouth watering scent of whole roasted pigs, spiced tobacco, and spilled liquor. Caleb and Mary-Beth stepped out onto the elevated, wrap around marble porch, completely exposed to the sprawling back courtyard of the estate.
The sight was nothing short of cinematic. The massive gardens and stone courtyards had been completely transformed. Hundreds of flickering gas lanterns and massive, roaring fire pits illuminated the winter night, casting a warm, golden glow over a sea of heavily armed, sharply dressed men.
The second Caleb's imposing figure appeared on the porch, with the stunning Mary-Beth on his arm and the stoic Antonio flanking his side, the courtyard erupted.
"THE DON AND THE MADAM!" a scarred Italian capo roared from the front of the crowd, raising a bottle of whiskey high into the air.
The cry was instantly taken up by hundreds of throats. The members of the syndicate immediately cheered for their Don. The roar was deafening, a massive, unified shockwave of sheer, unadulterated loyalty and absolute fanaticism.
These men had bled for him, they had conquered and destroyed many enemies for him, and because of his genius, they were now the undisputed kings of the Southern underworld. They hollered, they whistled, and they stomped their heavy boots against the cobblestones, the noise echoing out into the swamps of Lemoyne.
Standing near the front of the crowd, closest to the marble steps, were the core members of the Van der Linde gang. Arthur Morgan, wearing his own sharp suit, grinned broadly, leaning against a stone pillar. John Marston, holding a glass of scotch, raised it in a silent, respectful salute. Sadie Adler, looking remarkably clean in a dark practical bounty hunting outfit, let out a piercing, celebratory whistle, while Bill, Lenny, Sean , and the others cheered just as loudly as the Italian mobsters.
Caleb stood at the edge of the porch, letting the massive wave of adoration wash over him. He did not smile a politician's smile, he offered a fierce, deeply proud look of acknowledgement, his eyes sweeping over the army he had forged.
Immaculately dressed servants carrying massive silver trays immediately wove their way through the cheering crowd and stepped up onto the porch. One of the servants bowed, offering a tray laden with crystal flutes bubbling with the most expensive, vintage French champagne in existence.
Caleb reached out, taking two of the delicate crystal flutes. He handed one to Mary-Beth, who took it with a radiant, breathless smile, before keeping the other for himself.
He took a half step forward, right to the edge of the marble steps. He didn't ask for silence. He simply raised his crystal glass high into the winter air.
The effect was instantaneous. As if a switch had been flipped, the deafening roar of hundreds of men died down in a matter of seconds, rippling outward until the sprawling courtyard was completely, heavily silent, save for the crackle of the fire pits and the distant wind in the oak trees. They hung on his every movement.
The crowd immediately followed his lead, holding their toast high. Hundreds of glasses filled with golden champagne, deep red wine, and amber scotch were hoisted into the air, catching the firelight like a sea of glittering stars.
"Gentlemen," Caleb's voice boomed, rich, deep, and carrying the undeniable, gravitational weight of absolute victory. It echoed across the courtyard, commanding the attention of every single soul present. "I want to thank every single one of you for being here tonight. You are standing on the grounds of an empire that we built together. An empire built not on promises, but on iron, blood, and unbroken loyalty."
A low, approving murmur rippled through the capos.
"We are gathered here to celebrate," Caleb continued, his voice rising, injecting a fierce, prideful energy into the night air. "We celebrate a triumph that they said was impossible! In less than a week, we have completely crushed our enemies. We have broken the backs of those who thought they could intimidate us. We celebrate our absolute, total victory over the Grays! We celebrate our full, uncontested control over the town of Rhodes, the sprawling fields of Caliga Hall, and the ashes of the Braithwaite manor!"
The crowd roared in agreement, raising their glasses higher. The taste of the recent, brutal conquests in Scarlett Meadows was still fresh in their minds, and the Don was officially declaring it a total victory.
Caleb let them cheer for a moment before lowering his glass just a fraction, his expression turning incredibly serious, carrying a weight that instantly silenced the courtyard once again.
"But we do not just celebrate the dirt we have conquered," Caleb stated, his blue eyes sweeping over the captivated audience, locking briefly with Arthur and John. "We celebrate an evolution. We celebrate a major revelation. Tonight, I strip away the shadows we have been forced to hide within."
The men leaned in, the tension in the courtyard palpable. They could feel that history was about to be made on this porch.
"When I first arrived in the city of Saint Denis," Caleb explained, his voice echoing with a raw, gripping honesty, "I was a man surrounded by enemies. I was navigating a world run by tyrants like Angelo Bronte, surrounded by federal agents, corrupt politicians, and rival gangs who would have cut my throat for a single dollar. I needed a shield. I needed absolute caution to ensure the survival of my family."
Caleb paused, letting the silence stretch, building the dramatic tension to a fever pitch. He looked down at the crystal glass in his hand, then out at the army of killers who had sworn their lives to him.
"The name of McLaughlin was that shield," Caleb declared, his voice cutting through the crisp night air like a crack of thunder. "It was a ghost. A fabrication designed to keep the wolves at bay while we built our strength."
He stepped right to the edge of the stone steps, throwing his shoulders back, expanding his chest, and radiating the absolute, terrifying aura of the true billionaire industrialist he had become.
"But the wolves are dead," Caleb roared, a fierce, triumphant fire burning in his eyes. "And trust has been earned in blood! We own the wolves now! And because of the unwavering loyalty of every man standing in this courtyard, I no longer need to hide behind a ghost. My real name... the name of the man who will lead you into the new century... is Caleb Thorne."
The revelation hung in the air for a fraction of a second.
The crowd's reaction was a cinematic masterpiece of mixed, genuine surprise, followed instantly by absolute, roaring acceptance.
The Italian capos and the street level soldiers murmured in shock for a brief moment, processing the lie. But then, the realization hit them like a freight train. Thorne. The name stamped into the heavy, blued steel of the Vanguard rifles they were currently carrying. The name on the doors of the massive, revolutionary firearms factory that paid their exorbitant wages. He wasn't just a mob boss, he was the industrial god who was arming them.
The murmurs vanished, replaced by a deafening, thunderous wave of loyal applause. The men cheered louder than before, hoisting their glasses and screaming the new name into the night. "DON THORNE! DON THORNE!"
Near the front, the core members of the Van der Linde gang let out a collective, massive sigh of relief. Arthur chuckled, shaking his head as he took a deep drink of his scotch. John grinned broadly, clapping Sean on the back. The gang's relief at no longer having to cautiously filter their words, at no longer having to remember to use the fake "McLaughlin" alias in public, was a physical weight lifted from their shoulders. He was Caleb Thorne again. He was their brother.
Caleb felt a deep, profound satisfaction settle into his soul as he realized the change was not just accepted, but actively celebrated. He raised his hand, gesturing for calm, and the loyal army quickly quieted down to hear the rest of their sovereign's decree.
"With this name, comes a new era," Caleb announced, his voice taking on the sharp, uncompromising cadence of a corporate CEO. "The days of us operating strictly in the shadows as a mere mob family are officially over. As of this morning, the state government has officially recognized our legitimacy. I am incredibly proud to declare that the Thorne Holding Company is officially established!"
Another massive cheer went up, especially from Pierre and the legal team standing near the back, who had bled over those documents.
"This marks our full, irreversible transition from a criminal syndicate to an untouchable corporate business!" Caleb ordered, laying out the new laws of their reality. "We are no longer just outlaws and street enforcers! We are industrialists! We are landowners! We are the men who own the Southern economy!"
Caleb looked directly at Vincenzo, Silvio, and the scarred captains of his army.
"There are new rules now, gentlemen," Caleb declared, integrating their violent past into a legal future. "We do not extort for pennies in the mud. We negotiate for tens to hundreds of thousands in boardrooms. And the capos, the soldiers who have fought and bled to build this empire... you are no longer considered mafia muscle. As of tonight, you are officially serving as the Thorne Holding Company's private, elite corporate security forces. You have legal pensions. You have legitimate salaries. You are untouchable by the law!"
The men practically lost their minds. To be given not only wealth, but actual, legal legitimacy, to be told they would no longer be hunted by the police, but would instead operate above them, was a gift beyond measure. They raised their glasses, the cheers reaching a fever pitch, a chaotic, joyous celebration of their newly secured futures.
"To the Thorne Holding Company!" Caleb roared, raising his champagne flute high. "And to the family!"
"TO THE FAMILY!" the army screamed back in unison.
Caleb brought the crystal glass to his lips, taking a long, victorious drink of the freezing champagne. He looked out over the sea of cheering men, the roaring fires, and the sprawling estate. He had done it. He had saved the gang. He had conquered the state. He had built an empire that would rival the greatest fortunes of the 20th century.
But as the band struck up a triumphant, sweeping waltz and the men began to drink and celebrate in earnest, Caleb lowered his glass.
The roaring crowd, the millions of dollars, the corporate power, none of it meant a single thing without the woman standing beside him.
Caleb slowly turned to his left.
Mary-Beth was looking up at him, her dark eyes shining with tears of absolute, overwhelming pride. She had watched him manipulate governments, slaughter enemies, and build a fortress for their family, all while keeping his humanity intact. She looked at him as if he were the only man on earth.
As Caleb turned to her, a strange, beautiful shift occurred in the immediate vicinity of the porch. Arthur, John, Sadie, Hosea, Antonio, and all of the people who knew him best, noticed the sudden, intense shift in Caleb's demeanor. They slowly lowered their glasses. The cheering of the massive crowd in the background seemed to instantly fade into a dull, distant hum, replaced by an electric, breathless suspense that gripped the inner circle.
Caleb set his crystal champagne flute down onto a passing servant's silver tray without breaking eye contact with her.
He took a half step closer to Mary-Beth. His heart, which had remained perfectly calm while staring down a dozen federal agents, was suddenly hammering violently against his ribs.
"Caleb?" Mary-Beth whispered, her brow furrowing slightly in confusion as she noticed the sudden silence of the gang members standing near the steps. "What is it?"
Caleb didn't answer with words.
Slowly, deliberately, the Corporate Don of the American South, the most terrifying and powerful man in the state of Lemoyne, went down on one knee onto the cold marble floor of the porch.
A sharp, collective gasp echoed from the immediate crowd. Arthur's eyes widened in sheer shock. Sadie's hands flew to cover her mouth. Tilly and Karen, standing near the parlor doors, let out a synchronized squeal of disbelief.
Mary-Beth completely froze. The crystal glass in her hand trembled so violently that the champagne threatened to spill over the rim. Her breath hitched, her dark eyes widening in profound, paralyzing shock as she looked down at the man kneeling before her.
Caleb reached into the inner breast pocket of his pristine tuxedo jacket. He pulled out a small, heavy box crafted from dark, polished mahogany and lined with crushed velvet. It was the box he had specially requested, customized, and picked up from the terrified master jewelers at L'Étoile d'Or earlier that morning.
The suspense hung in the air, thick and agonizingly beautiful.
Caleb looked up into her tear filled eyes, his expression radiating a tenderness and a fierce, uncompromising love that completely eclipsed the warlord he had been just moments prior.
With a soft, metallic click, Caleb thumbed the small box open.
Resting inside, nestled against the dark velvet, was the ring. It was a masterpiece of impossible wealth and profound meaning. A massive, flawless, deep Colombian emerald, perfectly matching the stunning crimson of her gown by contrast, cut to catch every single sliver of the gaslight, surrounded by a breathtaking halo of crushed, perfectly matched diamonds, all set into a band of pure, unblemished platinum.
It was a ring fit for the undisputed Queen of a billionaire empire. Mary-Beth let out a choked, beautiful sob, the tears finally spilling over her eyelashes as she stared down at the ring, the weight of the life changing proposal washing over her in a tidal wave of emotion, entirely unaware of the hundreds of men holding their breath in the courtyard below, waiting for her answer.
