The latter was responsible for guiding the faithful and spreading the doctrine, while the former was required to worship the Lord devoutly and preserve her immaculate purity, so that she might serve at any moment the omniscient and omnipotent deity who was perhaps forever beyond the reach of mortals.
And now that Astrid Calliste had been confirmed as the Lord's incarnation walking upon the earth, the object of Monica's service had shifted from an intangible god to a person who truly existed. Fulfilling her duties as Saintess was no longer merely an empty line recorded in scripture that no one had ever attempted to carry out.
