Chapter 488: Effective Substitutions, Another Reverse Burst
Out of the timeout, Phoenix went to the bench and made 2 changes.
Jordan checked back in, even with 5 fouls. The last few minutes had turned the paint into a disaster zone. The Lakers kept pounding the interior, grabbing second chances, and forcing Phoenix into ugly rotations. Jordan's return was meant to fix 2 things immediately, rim protection and defensive rebounding.
Before he stepped on the floor, D'Antoni grabbed him for one last reminder.
"DeAndre, you've got 5. No reaching. No reckless jumps. If they attack the rim, stay vertical, stay smart. Do not gift them a sixth."
Jordan nodded hard.
D'Antoni also took out Raja Bell and sent in Novak. The message was obvious. Novak was there to live on the 3 point line and punish the doubles Chen Yan and Nash were seeing.
Novak had defensive issues and he was not built for a fourth quarter street fight, but with Phoenix's other role players missing open looks, D'Antoni had to gamble.
As Novak stepped in, Chen Yan patted him on the shoulder.
"Steve, be ready. You might get your shot any second. Knock it down, same as practice."
Novak nodded, still not looking fully convinced.
Chen Yan kept going, reading what was behind Novak's eyes.
"Don't crowd your man. You've got the height. A hand up is enough. If you lose position, foul. Be decisive. Don't hesitate."
That finally eased Novak's shoulders.
Phoenix's first possession after the timeout did not go the way they drew it up.
Chen Yan tried to attack first, with the plan to draw the double and kick. But once he gathered 1 step inside the free throw line, the Lakers swarmed him. Four bodies collapsed at once, like the floor had snapped shut.
Chen Yan tried to sling it out anyway. Posey got a fingertip on the pass and redirected it. Kobe snatched the loose ball cleanly.
Van Gundy called it immediately. "Chen drove too deep. The Lakers loaded the lane and cut off every passing window. That is exactly what they want."
Breen added, "At least it was not a live ball break. The Lakers are choosing to slow it down."
Kobe did exactly that. He palmed the ball in his right hand and pressed his left hand downward, signaling everyone to breathe.
Fast pace favored Phoenix. If the Lakers wanted a comeback, they had to control the tempo.
Once they were set, Kobe lobbed it into Garnett.
Garnett had been hot, and Phoenix was ready to send a double. Garnett saw it early and moved the ball before the trap could fully form.
Kobe caught and reset, with Chen Yan glued to him.
This stretch was brutal for Chen Yan. He was carrying Phoenix's scoring load and guarding Kobe, possession after possession. Every second was high stress.
Kobe crossed over and angled toward the middle. Chen Yan slid with him, cutting off the face up drive. Kobe used his body to shield and dribbled toward the right 45.
Then Posey flashed across the formation.
Novak read it wrong. He thought Posey was coming to screen for Kobe.
Instead, it was a handoff.
Novak lost him completely.
Posey took the handoff, cut hard into the paint, and finished before Jordan could contest. Jordan did not dare reach or swipe with 5 fouls. He could only watch.
103 to 101.
Staples Center woke up like someone hit a switch.
The chant started immediately.
Mike Breen smiled as the noise rolled in. "Now the building has found its voice. That is the classic Staples chant."
Phoenix came right back.
Chen Yan sprinted baseline, then looped out toward the corner and up to the wing, running a clean, purposeful route. The crowd did not move him at all. Phoenix was still ahead. His mind was locked on execution.
Nash did not hand him the ball for another isolation. That was a stamina tax Phoenix could not keep paying.
Nash used Diaw's screen, turned the corner left, took 2 dribbles, then fired it back to Diaw. Diaw immediately swung it to Chen Yan on the perimeter.
The Lakers shaded hard toward Chen Yan's side again.
Chen Yan raised the ball above his head with both hands and launched a long skip pass to the opposite corner.
Novak.
Wide open.
Novak caught and rose without hesitation.
That was why he was in the game.
Swish.
106 to 101.
A dagger 3 at exactly the right time.
The crowd's roar died in mid chant. Novak's shot snapped the Lakers' momentum in half.
On the Suns bench, D'Antoni clenched his fist. The gamble hit instantly.
The Lakers went right back inside.
Kobe dumped it to Garnett, with Fisher hanging in the corner and Camby in the paint, forming that familiar triangle shape.
This time, Phoenix stayed home. No double.
Garnett got a clean look.
And missed.
Camby tried to carve out space for the offensive rebound, but Jordan's vertical pop showed. He beat Camby to the ball and secured it.
Chen Yan stepped forward for the outlet, took it, and immediately pushed up the sideline. He was not wasting a single transition chance.
Outside the 3 point line, he dropped his hips and exploded into the lane.
The Lakers collapsed instantly.
Then Chen Yan hit the brakes, snapped his shoulders, and burst right back out beyond the arc.
The reverse burst.
Kobe and Posey both lunged, but they were a step late.
Chen Yan rose.
Swish.
109 to 101.
Phoenix stretched it back to 8 in a blink. The Lakers had finally cut it close, fought their way into the game, and Chen Yan slammed the door with 2 straight perimeter blows.
Kobe scanned the floor, jaw tight.
He knew he had to do something, right now, to break the pattern.
