Chapter 43 - Morning

Tuesday, 28th of January.

5:06 a.m.

Donovan scrolled on his phone with a cup of coffee on his other hand. He was sitting on a chair on his balcony.

He had finally fixed his sleep schedule, and slept for a total of 8 and a half hours.

The gentle, soft breeze hugged his body, making him feel as if he was in his mother's embrace.

Donovan's parents… They died three years after his birth, and it led to him being raised by his uncle, as well as his elder brother, Benedict.

Hm. Uncle… If memory serves me right, which I think it doesn't, the original Donovan's uncle is living alone on the same planet as Benedict. I wonder how he's doing?

As for Rosalind… That Jacob guy better not have tried anything with her. If he has, I'll straight up bust his jaw… Actually, never mind, Rosalind seemed to be quite hostile with him. She wouldn't let him try anything. Are they still travelling? But why?

Ah… The original Donovan once heard something about Rosalind wanting to travel all around the cosmos. It's nice to have such a beautiful dream for yourself.

Benedict is living happily with his wife, Rosalind's travelling the cosmos, and as for me…? Alone, in this small apartment, going to missions every day, and dealing with Annihiliths… It isn't all that bad, I guess. I'm financially stable, and it's a good life overall. Well, the fact that I have to risk my life in every mission isn't good at all. I almost just died yesterday…

Taking a sip of his coffee, Donovan looked at the busy city. Flying vehicles, Visitors going to the Portal Chamber…

Actually, that reminds me, there's a total of four Portal Chambers in Umbrellas. One in the east, west, south, and north… The Portal Chamber I always go to is the one on the east side.

While scrolling, Donovan saw a news article of the death of four Visitors on a planet.

Sigh… Every single day in Umbrellas, there's always a Visitor dying. He recited a quick prayer for the four Visitors that had died.

Which reminds me, the time I almost died yesterday… I was in a wheat field, and there was this ball of light… Strange, no matter how hard I try, I can't remember what the voice said and what it sounded like, but I have a faint memory that there was definitely a voice…

What even was that? The afterlife? Don't tell me I actually died, and I'm only alive now because of that deer? Damn… I'll make sure to feed it something good when I revisit the planet. If I can even meet the same deer again. There's probably millions of that deer on that planet.

I lost so much blood that I actually almost fainted yesterday upon arriving home… Thankfully, I'm alright now.

Donovan continued scrolling on his phone. Suddenly, he came across a trending "meme post" that everyone should just pick the Mage Class.

Upon checking the comments, there were a ton of people arguing and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the Mage Class.

There was even one comment dissing every other class, and that the Mage Class was superior. This comment had a total of 8,452 replies.

Holy sh*t…

Hm… Except for having to deal with Reaper-types, it's smooth sailing with the Mage Class. But that smooth sailing will turn into a rocky one upon encountering a Reaper-type Annihilith…

It's only when a Visitor is in Storm Rank that they can attempt to fight a Reaper-type Annihilith. Based on everything the original Donovan has experienced, a group of 10 Shower Ranks can defeat a Reaper-type but with extreme difficulty…

As for Drizzle Rank… Uh, I guess… fifty or a hundred of them is enough to defeat a Reaper?

Reapers are truly a nightmare to fight. Only the Assassin and Fighter Class at Storm Rank have the confidence to defeat one. Meanwhile, a Mage at Category 1 of Storm Rank just almost died while fighting one…

Uh, I don't know about the Ranger Class though. And Tank for that matter. I guess a Ranger-type still needs some support when up against a Reaper? Not sure. As for Tank… Uh, it can defend against its attacks, sure, but I'm not sure when it comes to defeating it…

I don't wanna talk about Healer.

Donovan then racked his brain to remember the Paths for each class. But it was all fragmented and incomplete.

Just based on what I remember, the Mage Class has 7 Paths. These are: Flame Mage, Lightning Mage, Light Mage, Shadow Mage, Water Mage, Ice Mage, and Earth Mage…

As for Fighter Class… It has 4 Paths. Uh, I only remember three… Berserker, Flaming Warrior, and Warrior of Cold.

Assassin has 4 Paths, but I only remember the two that Ava told me. Vampire and Lurker in Shadows.

Ranger Class… It has 4 Paths, but goddamn it, I only remember the one Path that sounded badass… Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse… Holy sh*t, why does the Ranger Class have such a badass Path?

And why does Mage have only the most basic names for its Paths…? Sigh.

I wonder what Paths that Miss Sylvia, Miss Clara, and Dean went for? Actually, I'm pretty sure that Miss Sylvia went for Warrior of Cold, but I don't know about the second path that she chose. Miss Clara… Uh, I didn't see her fight in the dream sequence back in Tosla.

Oh, right, that angel took her outside of the castle… Sigh, I hope Miss Clara has recovered from the trauma already.

Dean… Hm. I'm not very sure about the paths that he went for.

Donovan finished his cup of coffee, setting it down on the small table next to him. His thoughts went to the terrible trio.

They're probably going on a mission today. I remember seeing in their status screen that the three of them had almost the same amount of Canopy. Heh, don't tell me they've been progressing together as a trio? That's nice.

I hope those three kids reach Storm Rank safely and smoothly.

Suddenly, Donovan's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of sirens in the distance. Then, a flying motorcycle that was going at ridiculous speeds flew past his balcony, followed by two flying police cars chasing in pursuit.

Hm. Another day, another crime committed. So early in the morning, too.

My eyes were pretty sharp. That guy did not have his umbrella with him. Hm. Which reminds me once again, it's really super inconvenient to have to be holding your umbrella just to be able to cast spells.

Is there a stage in Storm Rank… or Typhoon Rank where Visitors no longer have to use umbrellas to use their spells? I hope so.

Donovan leaned back in his chair, his thoughts going to the past missions he's done ever since he transmigrated.

The planet Karlon… If I remember correctly, there was a war going on there. Eldroderon and Varkhos… If I have the chance in the future, I should revisit that planet.

And then there's Tosla… A major mission in my… uh, 4th day since transmigrating. It was my second mission since transmigration. I still remember everything vividly… That hooded old guy that Dean and Michael fought knows that I'm a transmigrator… Are there others that know of my transmigration? If so, then that's… really bad. Sigh, I hope nothing bad happens to me in the days ahead.

After Tosla was the planet Qerth, with Sir Vilvatore, the red dragon… Hm, I guess it counts as a mission, even though it was Miss Sylvia's…

Then there's the planet Dest, which is a desert planet. God, I don't even want to remember it. I felt like a barbecue on a stick there. Sand in my eyes, my mouth, my shoes… The people living there in a small village were hiding the Annihiliths deep underground, and it took me a while to convince them to let me underground in my disguise…

Finally, Arnica. I guess that makes it 5 planets that I've been to since my transmigration. The original Donovan has been to countless planets for countless missions. I can't even remember all of them, and there were a lot of major missions that the original Donovan went through.

Hehe, I wonder what planet it'll be for today? Ah, but I'm still feeling pretty fatigued from that fight with the Reaper yesterday… I'll go in the afternoon.

He just wanted to relax for a bit. Still sitting on his chair, he thought about the original Donovan's life with his family.

Closing his eyes, a certain memory came to his mind…

***

Earth.

Benedict arrived home with a groan escaping his lips.

A very young Donovan came running towards him. "Big Bro! Big Bro, big Bro! I want to fight those big, bad-looking aliens!" shouted Donovan as he hugged Benedict's leg.

Upon hearing this, Benedict ruffled Donovan's hair with a sigh. "Oh, but it's really dangerous! Are you sure you're up for the job?"

"Mhm!"

With a smile, Benedict carried Donovan, setting him on his shoulders.

"Maybe in the future. For now, go play with your sister, alright?" said Benedict.

"But she doesn't want to play with me… It's boring playing with a baby, and she's having more fun looking at planets, spaceships, and stuff!"

"Well, want to massage my back then?"

"Okay."

The house they were living in was in the middle-class. It had a second floor, a garden in the backyard, a few expensive pieces of furniture, a wine collection that belonged to their uncle, and a few paintings scattered around the house that were drawn by their father who died just 4 years ago.

Five minutes later.

Donovan was sitting beside his brother who was wincing in pain as he treated a nasty-looking wound. But Donovan had already become used to this, so he wasn't repulsed at all.

Benedict had changed from his black suit to comfortable clothes. He was sitting on the sofa as he doused a brownish-red liquid to a wound on his leg.

"Big Bro, why do you always come home with an injury?" asked Donovan with an innocent face full of curiosity.

"Agh… Well, your big brother is actually a very amazing guy that fights bad guys." Benedict answered.

"Woah!"

Benedict chuckled. Under his eyes were severe eye bags, which Donovan thought was a normal thing in people. Donovan heard him mutter in a low voice, "Ugh, goddamn it, this hurts… I should've just asked Christian to heal me… Ah, she's still angry at me, that Mei…"

After a long while, Donovan asked, "Big Bro, do you want me to massage your back now?"

"Yeah, please do… Thanks, Donovan."

Benedict slowly laid down on the large sofa. Then, the small Donovan stepped on his back, stomping on it. Benedict kept letting out groans and… moans as Donovan jumped and stomped on his back.

From upstairs, a baby named Rosalind was giggling to herself as she played with spaceship toys.

***

Donovan opened his eyes. Such a fond memory…

Heh, the clues were right there from the very beginning. I was too young and stupid to connect the dots that Benedict was doing Visitor work. He did a terrible job at hiding it, yet I was too stupid to figure it out…

I wonder what kind of Visitor Benedict was like…? Was he a Mage-type? A Fighter? An Assassin? Hm, actually, I should try asking Tiero if he knows about Benedict. I should also ask him for the Visitor Records…

He was definitely a powerhouse, hence why the higher-ups wanted him back. Tch, can't they see that he's retired? Just let it go… Actually, what age is Benedict now? I really can't remember… Damn you, original Donovan for becoming distant with your siblings!

Also, Benedict talked about someone… Mei? Who's Mei? Who's Christian? Friends of his, most likely.

Donovan's smile disappeared from his face. He remembered his friends and family in his previous life as Leon Valentin. He misses them greatly.

Ahhh… I want to return home already… They must be worried sick because of me. Actually, what even happened to my body in my original universe when I transmigrated? Sigh…

Donovan then stared off into the distance. The sunrise was always a beautiful thing to see in the early morning.
