Chapter 8 - First Encounter

I had seen war, plenty of it. The blood, the screams, the fire—I'd learned to accept it as part of the grim reality of our existence. It was the only thing that kept me going—surrendering to the chaos, letting the storm of battle carry me forward. I had no illusions. The Imperium didn't care about me or my brothers. We were expendable. Disposable.

But this? This was something else entirely.

The battle was already lost.

We had been fighting for days, entrenched in the charred ruins of a once-bustling city now reduced to a smoldering shell by Tau fire and our own artillery. The air was thick with the acrid stench of burnt flesh and ozone. My squad—what was left of it—huddled behind the wreck of an old transport vehicle, desperate to catch our breath. The Tau had already overwhelmed our lines. Their pulse rifles ripped through the air in a steady staccato, cutting down the last remnants of our forces with cold efficiency.

A few of us had made it this far, but we were cornered, trapped. Every inch of ground we gained was paid for in blood. It was a matter of time before we were overrun completely. We were surrounded on all sides. Our comms were down, and I hadn't heard from Command in hours. It was only a matter of time before we were buried beneath the oncoming waves of Xenos.

I don't know why I looked up when I did. Maybe it was the flickering of the distant sky, a momentary change in the dull glow. Or perhaps, I had already resigned myself to the fact that the end was near. Whatever it was, I saw it then.

At first, I thought I was hallucinating, the fatigue and the stress getting to me. But it wasn't a trick of the light. No, there was something there.

A massive shape, rising from the smoking earth. At first, I thought it was a new weapon from the Tau—something enormous and incomprehensible. But then, it began to move, and it was clear this was no Xenos. It was alive.

A towering figure, clad in gleaming, otherworldly armor that shimmered like liquid metal under the blood-red sky. Its form was tall, impossibly tall—more than any man had the right to be. It stood there, a dark silhouette against the chaos of the battlefield, and for a moment, everything seemed to freeze.

Then, I saw the face.

Or rather, I felt the face. It wasn't human, not by any means. There was something ancient and cold about it, something utterly alien, and yet… I understood it. The feeling was like being pierced by an invisible gaze, something far older and more powerful than any mortal mind could comprehend.

In that instant, all the noise of the battlefield seemed to die away. The screams, the gunfire, the hum of the Tau pulse rifles—they were gone, replaced by an oppressive silence. The air itself seemed to crackle with an overwhelming presence. I wanted to look away, to shield my mind from whatever power this thing possessed, but I couldn't.

It reached down with a hand the size of a small building, a single movement that sent tremors through the earth beneath me. There was a crack as something shattered in the distance, followed by the screams of Tau soldiers. The air hummed with energy, and the figure moved again, its presence a tidal wave crashing against the battlefield.

The Tau, for their part, didn't seem prepared for this. They were sophisticated, they had technology that could outmatch any human force, but they had no defense for what had just appeared. The pulse rifles that had torn through our comrades did nothing against the towering figure. The Xenos soldiers turned, confused, attempting to regroup.

Then, the figure did something that I still can't explain. It raised one of its arms, and from it, a burst of psychic power shot out like a lightning bolt, striking the ground in a violent explosion of energy. The ground trembled, and a massive wave of force rippled through the Tau ranks, sending them flying through the air.

Their advanced armor did little to protect them. The first wave of fire from the towering figure obliterated entire squads in seconds, reducing them to nothing but slag and ash. I had never seen anything like it—the Tau didn't stand a chance.

And that was when I realized. This was no Imperial soldier, no new weapon from the Adeptus Mechanicus. It was something else entirely. Something that should not have been here, on this world. This was the end of something.

My breath caught in my throat as the figure turned its gaze toward me—toward us. There was no anger in its eyes, no hatred. It was as if it was aware of us, but we were insignificant, fleeting.

And yet, I felt something else. It knew me. Somehow, it knew me.

"Chosen," it whispered. The voice was not a voice at all. It was a presence, deep and overwhelming, as if it came from the very core of the universe. "Chosen... to bear witness."

I didn't understand. I couldn't understand. But the words stayed with me, lingering in the air like the promise of something terrible.

Then, the figure turned away. It did not speak again, and it did not need to. The Tau were already fleeing. They had seen enough to know this was no longer a battle they could win. The battlefield erupted into chaos as they retreated, leaving their dead behind.

In the distance, the figure began to move again, its colossal form striding across the ruined city like a god reclaiming its domain. There was a tremor in the air, and the ground beneath us seemed to shift with every step.

We had been saved. Or had we? In the midst of victory, there was only more uncertainty. The figure, this… Chosen One, had intervened, but for what purpose?

"Get up," my squad leader barked, dragging me from my stupor. "Move, soldier! We've still got to survive."

But I couldn't move. I couldn't think. I just kept staring at the retreating figure in the distance, my mind racing with the impossible, wondering who—or what—it was. What had just intervened in our battle?

And, most importantly… why had it chosen to spare us?
