Chapter 70 - CHAPTER 61

After arriving at the villa James had rented, Fruitcake's tail wagged excitedly as he darted around, investigating every corner with boundless curiosity. The villa itself was an architectural marvel of glass and light, designed to showcase breathtaking views of the vast sea stretching endlessly beyond. A wide porch extended from the living room, with two steps descending toward the soft sand of the beach. The villa was flanked by two others, yet tall trees and lush flowering foliage provided a natural barrier, ensuring their privacy.

Andrew moved up to the second floor, where glass walls continued, offering each room a seamless view of the ocean below. Four rooms lined the hallway—two on each side—leading to a small terrace at the far end. Soft citrus-colored curtains there billowed gently in the ocean breeze. Andrew placed their bags in the chosen room, moving deliberately, as if savoring the tranquility and beauty around him, before making his way back downstairs.

Meanwhile, Euan stood at the wide glass doors connecting the living room to the porch, his eyes bright with wonder as he took in the view. The sea was calm, and only a few scattered people walked along the nearly deserted beach—a serene contrast to the bustling beaches they were used to. His gaze traced the shoreline until he spotted Fruitcake, gleefully splashing in the shallow waves.

"Fruitcake! Be careful!" Euan called, laughing as the dog ignored him, darting through the water with unabashed joy. His voice was filled with affection, an endearing mix of amusement and worry.

When Euan turned back, he found Andrew a few feet behind him, watching him with a warm, knowing smile. Something in Andrew's quiet presence felt deeply reassuring, as if they were sharing an unspoken understanding amidst the stillness of the scene. Euan's grin softened as their eyes met, the gentle sound of waves rolling onto shore filling the comfortable silence between them.

A few steps away, James leaned casually against the doorframe, his phone pressed to his ear as he spoke to Kevin about the restobar. Though his tone was calm, his gaze drifted occasionally to the porch and his friends.

Finishing the call, James pocketed his phone and glanced over at Andrew and Euan, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "Are we just going to stand here admiring the view all day?" he teased. "Because if we don't get to the grocery store soon, we'll be starving by dinner."

Euan, still captivated by the villa's beauty, frowned slightly as he looked over at James. "But… shouldn't we unpack first?"

James shrugged, his smirk widening. "Nah," he replied, lightheartedly brushing off the idea as though it hardly mattered. Then he turned to Fruitcake, calling, "Come on, Fruitcake!" His voice sliced through the quiet, bringing a burst of energy as the dog bounded up the porch steps, tail wagging furiously, ready for whatever adventure awaited next.

"Sorry," Euan murmured, sitting on the edge of the bed, his hands twisting nervously in his lap. He couldn't bring himself to look directly at Andrew, who was kneeling by the luggage, sorting through it with a careful, deliberate touch. James stood nearby, leaning casually against the doorframe with his arms crossed, watching the two of them with an almost amused expression, though there was a trace of concern in his eyes.

Andrew sighed, running a hand over his face as he tried to stay calm. "Most of your things are in the other bag, right?" he asked, glancing up at Euan. His voice was steady, though the concern in his gaze was clear.

Euan nodded, his expression guilty. "Yeah, the important stuff's in there," he said softly.

James, sensing the tension, spoke up, his voice light and practical. "The airport said the person who took your luggage by mistake is willing to meet tomorrow in Seoul," he said, looking from Andrew to Euan. "I'll pick it up for you. I can use Andrew's car since he's already headed that way, and I'll be back by the end of the day."

Andrew, who had been crouched over the bag, stood up straighter. His face shifted as his concern deepened. He glanced at James, his tone firm but gentle. "I'll go get it myself," he said, a soft resolve in his voice. "You two don't need to worry about it."

James raised an eyebrow, studying Andrew closely. "You sure about that?" he asked, his tone a mix of playful teasing and genuine curiosity. "You've got a lot on your plate tomorrow at the office. Not sure you'll have time for this."

Andrew's lips tightened, his brow furrowing as he turned to Euan. His voice softened, a hint of tenderness underlined by concern. "But I don't want you to be alone here."

Euan shifted uncomfortably, feeling the weight of Andrew's protectiveness. He could see how much Andrew cared, but he didn't want to add to his stress. "I'll be fine," he said with a soft smile, trying to reassure him. "I promise I'll stay inside the villa the whole time." His voice was gentle, filled with sincerity. "I won't go anywhere until James gets back."

Andrew's eyes stayed on Euan, his gaze lingering with concern. Though his expression softened, the tension remained on his shoulders, and he couldn't quite shake the feeling of unease. "I still don't like the idea of leaving you alone," he murmured, his voice low.

James stepped forward then, his presence steady and comforting. He placed a reassuring hand on Andrew's shoulder, his touch grounding. "Andrew, for god's sake it's only for a few hours" he said, his voice with annoying "he'll be fine. The villa's secure, and where the hell he will go aside from the beach."

A brief silence fell, heavy with unspoken thoughts. Andrew took a deep breath, the tension slowly lifting from his body. He let out a soft exhale, his expression shifting into reluctant acceptance. "Okay," he said, his voice quieter now, though still filled with concern. He turned back to Euan, his gaze softening further. "But you have to promise me—you stay inside, alright? No risks, no wandering off. Promise me."

James gave Andrew a light, reassuring clap on the shoulder, the simple gesture easing some of the remaining tension. "There we go," he said, his tone light and cheerful. "Everything's sorted."

The next morning, Andrew and James made sure to leave the villa early, with the faintest glow of sunrise breaking over the horizon. James was intent on returning before nightfall, so Euan wouldn't be left alone for too long. But before they could set off, Andrew turned to Euan and James with a long list of reminders, each word heavy with protective urgency. His tone was serious, almost pleading, as he tried to make them understand. Euan sat silently, gripping the edge of the sofa to keep himself calm, frustration bubbling just below the surface. He wanted to avoid any more conflict with Andrew, even though he could feel his patience thinning. Andrew's concern for him venturing out alone had only intensified since arriving in Korea; the vigilance was suffocating, as though Andrew wished he could bind him to the villa itself to keep him safe.

After a quick breakfast, Euan relaxed into the sofa, curling up with one leg folded beneath him, the other resting casually across his knee, creating a small haven. Fruitcake lay by his side, calm and content.

Then, Fruitcake's ears pricked up, and his body tensed, catching the distant sounds of laughter and playful shouts from the shore. His tail wagged furiously, the thrill of excitement building as he crouched, ready to pounce like a spring wound tight. The sounds of joy from the beach seemed to ignite something wild in him, pushing him to leap into action.

With a happy yip, Fruitcake bolted off the couch, his paws clattering across the wooden floor, shattering the stillness of the villa. Euan startled, his heart skipping a beat as he scrambled to his feet. "No, Fruitcake!" he called out, his voice a mix of shock and alarm.

He slipped into his slippers in a rush, the fabric barely touching his feet as he dashed toward the door. "Come back!" he shouted, his voice rising in urgency, but Fruitcake was already a streak of fur, bounding down the steps in a blur, heading toward the beach.

As the car rolled to a stop, Tobi bounded out, exclaiming, "Finally!" Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she drank in the sight of the villa, her face glowing as if she could hardly contain her joy. She took in the view slowly, seeming to want to capture every detail, savoring each moment.

Youn-Jae shut the car door with a firm click and strode to the trunk, throwing Tobi a playful smirk as he began unloading their bags. "Madam! You forgot your luggage," he teased, lifting a brow. "Too busy admiring the place?"

Tobi crossed her arms, her lips pressing into a feigned pout as she turned toward him. "I was just taking in the view!" she replied with a huff, though the grin slipping onto her face betrayed her playful mood. Youn-Jae chuckled as he grabbed both their bags, his movements practiced and efficient.

Inside the villa, as he took his first steps down the hallway, a wave of memories came over him. The familiar scent of salt and the soft glow of sunlight filtering onto the terrace transported him back—images of Ji-Won, ghostlike and unbidden, began to fill his mind. The memories struck with an intensity he hadn't anticipated, each one pulling him deeper into the ache that still lingered.

Walking out to the terrace, he gripped the railing tightly, feeling the roughness of the wood under his fingers as he stared at the endless stretch of ocean. The thought of Ji-Won lingered, a bittersweet presence haunting every corner. Youn-Jae's heart twisted as he recalled fleeting moments and lost chances. It felt as though he were drowning in the regret of all that had been left unsaid and undone, memories crashing over him like relentless waves.

Just then, his gaze drifted up to the smaller terrace—the one where Ji-Won used to stand, calling out to him with that familiar voice. He could almost see Ji-Won there, smiling under the sun, his laughter floating on the breeze. The memory struck Youn-Jae like a blow, his breath catching painfully as he gripped the railing even tighter, knuckles turning white. He felt as if the vast, empty ocean mirrored the emptiness inside him—endless and unforgiving.

Suddenly, a jolt brought him out of his trance—a sudden thud against his legs, followed by a flurry of fur. A large, fluffy dog had bounded onto the terrace, nearly toppling him over in its excitement. Youn-Jae stumbled backward, letting out a startled laugh as he tried to steady himself, only to find himself sitting on the wooden floor, dazed and slightly breathless.

Blinking, he looked up to find the dog standing in front of him, its head tilted, watching him with big, curious eyes. Youn-Jae chuckled, reaching out with a soft, "Hey, buddy," as his hand met the dog's thick, soft fur. "You lost?" he murmured, feeling a strange comfort as the dog pressed closer, its tail swaying gently.

For a few peaceful moments, Youn-Jae scratched behind the dog's ears, finding solace in its calm presence. It felt as if the dog understood his pain, as though they were sharing a silent connection. The weight in his chest began to lift, just a little, and the tension eased as he found himself lost in the warmth of the animal's quiet companionship.

Then, the dog's ears perked up, swiveling toward a faint sound in the distance—a voice, barely audible, calling out from below. The dog's tail began to wag, and with a bark of excitement, it shifted its gaze toward the terrace stairs, body tensing in anticipation.

The barking grew louder and more insistent until a figure appeared at the edge of the terrace steps. Euan stood there, his face a mix of exasperation and affection. "Fruitcake, come on! Get down here! This isn't our villa," he called out, a smile tugging at his lips despite his mildly scolding tone. He hesitated, glancing at the man whom Fruitcake had bumped into, though the dog's large body blocked the man's face. Unsure of how to approach, Euan's gaze flickered between the stranger and the dog. "You even knocked into someone, huh?" Euan called out to Fruitcake, his voice tinged with embarrassment as he lifted his head, trying to get a better look at the man still seated on the ground. His eyes darted nervously, unsure of how to address the situation.

"I'm so sorry, sir. He didn't mean any harm," Euan said, voice wavering slightly. But something felt... strange. The man before him hadn't moved, hadn't even turned to face him fully, as if lost in another world entirely. Euan tried again, this time with a touch more concern.

"Sir? Are you… alright?"

But Euan still received no answer.

Why does this chill crawl over me so suddenly, like ice creeping from within?

My heart thunders against my chest, erratic, unrelenting—

each beat a question I dare not ask, each pulse a reminder of the fear I can't escape.

The voice.

It cuts through the air, sharp, like the ghost of a melody I once knew—

so hauntingly close to his voice, the one that still clings to my soul,

yet I'm frozen, too afraid to turn, too terrified to face it.

Because what if it's not him? What if I'm chasing shadows in the dark,

my mind twisting in delusion, consumed by the echo of my own yearning?

But worse—

What if it is him? What if I've dared to hope,

only to watch it slip away like everything else I couldn't hold on to?

I'm paralyzed, terrified to look, to face what could either be my deepest fear,

or a shattered dream that never belonged to me in the first place.

Am I clinging to hope in the silence of these empty spaces,

only to drown in the weight of my own desire?

The story doesn't end here...
