Chapter 301 - Chapter 300: The Silence of the Boom

---Akatsuki Hideout - River Country Cavern---

The cavern did not move. The dust hung suspended in the shafts of sunlight that pierced the gloom.

But something shifted in the atmosphere… a sudden, violent drop in pressure.

For a single, stretched heartbeat, Deidara stared at the stump where his left hand had been. The cauterized edges of the wound smoked faintly, then cracked open as the shock wore off.

Blood dripped steadily from the severed wrist, splashing against the cold stone with a rhythmic tap, tap, tap.

Then the pain arrived.

"-YOU LITTLE-!"

His scream tore through the chamber, raw and animalistic, bouncing off the walls and mixing with the low drone of the Gedo Mazo. Chakra surged violently around him, erratic and unstable, reacting to his fury. His remaining hand flew to the pouch on his hip, teeth bared in a snarl that was more beast than man.

Sasori, still encased in his Hiruko puppet, did not flinch. He merely turned his heavy, wooden head.

"You let your guard down," Sasori said flatly, his voice grinding like rusted gears. "That's pathetic, Deidara. You talk too much."

Deidara's visible eye twitched, a vein popping on his forehead.

"Shut up, un!"

He kicked off the ground, leaping backward to create distance. His remaining hand… the right one… dived into his clay pouch. The mouth in his palm chewed furiously, mixing chakra with white earth.

The clay bulged, swelled...

"C1!"

He spat.

A swarm of palm-sized clay spiders erupted from his hand. They hit the ground running, dozens of them, scuttling across the cavern floor with terrifying speed like living landmines.

Haku did not pursue immediately. He stood his ground, Kusanagi held low, watching the trajectory of the arachnids.

The spiders ignored him. They scuttled toward the larger group… Team 7.

"Don't touch the ground!" Kakashi barked instantly, his Sharingan tracking the chakra signatures inside the clay. "They're proximity-based! Move!"

Naruto reacted on instinct, channeling chakra to his feet and jumping high onto the cavern wall. Sasuke leapt upward onto a broken pillar, his movement efficient and sharp. Sakura pushed off the rubble with explosive force, shattering the stone beneath her as she vaulted to safety.

The spiders detonated.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Explosions rippled across the cave floor in violent succession. It wasn't just noise; it was concussion. The blast waves sprayed shrapnel and smoke, shaking the very foundations of the hideout. Loose stone cracked and fell from the ceiling, splashing into the underground pools.

Even though everything was in chaos, smoke billowing and rocks falling... Haku moved.

Zero Friction.

He didn't run. He slid.

He moved across the vertical cavern wall, horizontal to gravity, gliding above the smoke and the explosions. He was a teal blur, cutting through the haze. Kusanagi angled downward, trailing a ribbon of cold wind.

Deidara saw him this time. His mechanical eye zoomed in, tracking the heat signature.

"Too fast-!"

Haku's blade flashed.

Deidara barely twisted in time, throwing his body to the side.

SLASH.

The cut meant for his throat missed by inches, but it carved a deep trench across his chest, shredding the black Akatsuki cloak and slicing into skin.

Blood sprayed, mixing with the dust.

Deidara screamed again, this time in rage rather than shock. He tumbled across the ground, regaining his footing near the statue's base.

"You think you're elegant?" he roared, clutching his bleeding chest. "You think you're precise?!"

His eye widened, the pupil trembling with madness.

"I'll show you art! I'll show you something you can't cut!"

He bit down on a larger clay sphere he had already prepared in his pouch. He didn't need both hands for this one. He chewed, chakra flooding his mouth.

He spat it into the air.

"C2!"

The clay expanded mid-flight. It grew rapidly, morphing grotesquely... wings unfolding, a long tail extending, a mouth gaping wide.

A massive clay dragon burst into existence above the battlefield. It beat its wings, slamming the air into hurricane gusts that cleared the smoke instantly.

Dust blasted outward. Rubble flew.

Sasuke's eyes snapped upward from his perch on the pillar.

"This is crazy," he muttered, watching the beast ascend.

Lightning sparked at his fingers, restless and dangerous.

Naruto growled beside him, clinging to the wall. Red chakra bubbled more violently now, forming the outline of a fox's ears. "He made a dragon out of mud?!"

Haku landed lightly on a shattered column, his eyes tracking the construct.

"Air superiority," he murmured, disappointed. "Why do people always like going up in the air when they are losing?"

Deidara leapt upward, catching the dragon's tail and scrambling onto its back. Blood dripped down his sleeve, but he looked down at them like a god judging insects.

"You're not cutting me again, Ice Devil!" he spat, his voice echoing in the cavern. "From up here, I control the canvas! I control the battlefield!"

The dragon opened its mouth.

Clay bombs began forming along its spine like tumors… guided missiles, round and deadly.

Haku's gaze shifted briefly toward the center of the room.

To Gaara.

The extraction continued. The phantom dragons were still pulling, pulling, pulling. Gaara's face was a mask of silent agony.

Thirty-five percent.

Time was bleeding away. If this continued, Gaara would die, and the Akatsuki would get exactly what they wanted.

Haku exhaled slowly. The cold breath fogged in the air.

Then...

He vanished.

Deidara's eye widened. He scanned the ground. Nothing. He scanned the walls. Nothing.

"Where could he... Above-?!"

Haku appeared mid-air behind the dragon's left wing. He hadn't jumped; he had used the falling debris as stepping stones, his frictionless momentum carrying him across empty space like a skater on invisible glass.

Kusanagi struck.

Wind Release: Vacuum Cut.

The wing split cleanly from the body.

The dragon lurched violently to the left, gravity reclaiming it.

Deidara stumbled on the beast's back. "What!?"

But he grinned through his bloodied teeth.

"You fell for it, un!"

He formed a seal with his single hand.

KATSU.

The severed wing exploded.

Point blank.

The detonation swallowed Haku whole in a sphere of fire and concussive shockwave.

Naruto's heart skipped a beat.

"Haku!"

Smoke filled the chamber ceiling, thick and black. Fragments of clay rained downward like shrapnel.

Deidara laughed, his breath ragged, clinging to the spiraling dragon.

"Art is-"

The smoke parted.

A perfect, crystalline dome of ice hovered mid-air, suspended by nothing. It was flawless, a jewel in the darkness. Frost spiraled outward from its surface, freezing the smoke into falling snow.

Inside the dome...

Haku stood unharmed. His kimono fluttered slightly.

His eyes were no longer soft brown. They were frozen pools of focus.

The ice dome shattered outward in a glittering explosion of shards. Each fragment was propelled by wind chakra acceleration, turning the defensive barrier into an offensive shotgun blast.

THWIP-THWIP-THWIP.

The shards sliced across the dragon's body, peppering it with holes.

Deidara screamed as dozens of shallow cuts opened across his arms and torso. He shielded his face, but he couldn't shield the dragon.

The construct destabilized. It lost lift.

It pitched downward, crashing toward the cavern floor.

Sasuke seized the moment.

"Chidori!"

The sound of a thousand birds chirping filled the cave. Lightning roared through Sasuke's arm, turning his hand into a blade of pure energy. He launched himself upward from the pillar.

He pierced straight through the falling dragon's chest.

ZZZZZT.

The lightning disrupted the earth chakra holding the clay together. The construct detonated in mid-air, not with fire, but with a dull thud of failing cohesion, scattering clay chunks across the cavern.

Deidara was thrown backward by the force. He slammed into a stone pillar with a bone-jarring crack.

He slid down to the floor, coughing blood.

The remaining palm-mouth on his right hand trembled violently. He tried to reach for his pouch, but his fingers were numb.

Haku landed silently ten meters away.

Kusanagi lowered.

"You're inefficient," Haku said calmly, walking toward the fallen bomber. "You rely on spectacle, so you waste movement. You waste chakra. You waste life."

Deidara laughed weakly. It was a wet, gurgling sound.

"Spectacle?" he rasped, looking up with a manic, broken light in his eyes. "You think this is spectacle?"

He ripped his shirt open.

His remaining hand pressed against his chest.

There, over his heart, was a large mouth. It was sewn shut with thick black thread.

Deidara ripped the threads out with a savage jerk.

The clay mouth beneath his shirt began to open. It gnashed its teeth, hungry.

Naruto's eyes widened. He sensed the chakra building up inside the man. It wasn't normal. It was dense. Implosive.

"Kakashi-sensei-!"

Kakashi's Sharingan sharpened instantly. He recognized the technique. He had read the reports on the Explosion Corps.

"Haku! Move! Get back!"

But Haku didn't retreat.

Instead... He stepped forward.

---The Statue's Hand---

Behind them, unnoticed by most in the chaos, Itachi's projection flickered.

Just slightly. A ripple in the rainbow light.

His eyes, obscured by the hologram's distortion, shifted toward the entrance of the cave. He felt a presence. A familiar one.

The chant stuttered for half a second...

Gaara's draining slowed. The blue stream of chakra thinned, giving the Kazekage a microsecond of respite.

---The Cavern Floor---

Deidara's chest-mouth grinned wide. He shoved a massive wad of clay into it.

The mouth chewed. The chakra in Deidara's body began to turn inward. His skin started to turn translucent, veins glowing with a terrifying white light.

"Art," he whispered, blood dripping from his chin onto the glowing chest, "is an explosion."

"C0."

The clay in his chest began to glow.

Brighter.

Brighter.

Brighter.

It was a light that promised to erase everything within ten kilometers. The ultimate suicide bomb.

Haku braced himself, preparing an Ice Dome, knowing it might not be enough. Sasuke shielded his eyes. Kakashi reached for his Mangekyo.

Then, a voice spoke.

"Ah, this would be a problem if this detonated."

Deidara blinked.

A hand appeared on his shoulder.

Standing beside him, appearing out of thin air as if he had been part of the shadow all along, was Alaric.

He was casual. Relaxed. He held a cigar in his other hand.

"Wha-" Deidara started, his brain unable to process the new arrival.

The light in his chest reached critical mass. The detonation sequence was locked. The blast was inevitable.

Alaric didn't panic. He simply slapped a piece of paper onto Deidara's chest, right over the gnashing mouth.

It wasn't a normal tag. It was a complex, golden fuinjutsu formula that Alaric had written in the air a second ago and solidified onto paper.

Fuinjutsu: Absolute Stasis Seal.

ZHOOM.

The sound was like a vacuum sucking air out of a room.

The blinding white light on Deidara's chest... vanished.

It didn't fade. It was deleted.

The chakra that was about to go nuclear was instantly frozen, locked into a state of suspended animation within the ink of the seal. The chest-mouth froze mid-chew. The transparency of Deidara's skin reverted to normal flesh tones.

The cave went dark again, save for the sunlight from the entrance.

Deidara stared down at his chest. He stared at the piece of paper. He widened his eyes, his mouth opening and closing like a fish.

"My... my art..." Deidara whispered, horror dawning on him. "It... it didn't..."

"Nope," Alaric said cheerfully, patting Deidara on the head. "No boom for you today. The neighbors would complain."

Alaric looked up at the stunned Team 7 and the stoic Haku.

"Yo," Alaric waved. "Did I miss anything?"
