Chapter 47 - Devil’s Luck

"Devil of... Luck?" Gili tilted his head towards Ali. "That... would explain a lot, actually."

Ali just stared at his captain. "Yeah... like how he became a captain so fast..."

"And why Sachi fell." Pat noted.

"I-I don't understand, Serendelle. What the hell are you doing!?" David seemed a bit panicked.

"Do I have to spell it out for you? The Goddess of Luck picked him, and I picked you. Though I didn't expect to meet so soon." He turned to Sachi. "So, where's the Goddess?"

Sachi picked himself up using the counter behind him. "...She's not here."

"Ha! Didn't expect that softy to abandon her Champion!"

David turned back to his squadron. "S-since he's not from this realm, we should inform the sergeant... right? That's protocol?"

Pat turned his head up to look at Ali. "What happens when someone from another realm is found by the guild?"

A voice from the second floor hung over the railing. "They'll kill him, probably."

Down dropped a strange figure with long blonde hair. Their shoes slammed against the rotting wooden floor, leaving even more cracks.

David jumped. "H-hey! Try not to damage the hall, okay!?"

The figure turned to reveal what Sachi could only assume was a Devil. She dawned a baseball cap, what Sachi thought was a varsity jacket unzipped to reveal a white t-shirt matching the complexion of her would-be skin, and a pair of ripped blue jeans.

Pat's eyes lit up. "Mercedes!" He jumped for a hug, but with one outstretched hand she quickly shut him down.

"Where are the others?" Ali muttered.

"Still sleeping, probably. I imagine their just enjoying their time till it inevitably ends."

Ali crossed his arms with a frown in return.

Mercedes turned and approached Sachi. "So this is a God's Champion, huh? Can't see how they're so high and mighty picking mortals like this."

Sachi, put off by the sudden approach, didn't even react to her comment, her large empty eyes distracted him.

David turned towards the door. "S-shouldn't we inform the sergeant still? I'm sure he wouldn't just kill him..."

"David." Ali stepped forward. "Wouldn't it be better to see what he can do before we turn him in? We don't know what they might do with him, and someone from another realm is a rare piece that could boost our own standings."

"I-I don-"

"I agree with Ali." Gili sat on a table nearby. "He's strong- I mean, if, he's strong, this could be the advantage we needed."

Pat, now sat on the floor, nodded. "It couldn't hurt to try, right?"

"Well... If you all think so, I guess we could always try." He turned back to Sachi. "What powers did you get?"

Hesitantly, Sachi opened his menu.

David's eyes grew wide. "Woah! It's just like an RPG!" He snapped his head to his Devil. "Serendelle, why didn't you give me this too?"

He crossed his arms. "Because that's just worthless junk."

"O-oh, yeah. I guess it wouldn't do anything if it just displayed stats... Does it actually do anything?"

Sachi thought for a minute. "Honestly, I'm still trying to get use to it. I think doing certain things unlocks permanent skills, and by using certain weapons, I can permanently use those skills without the weapon itself. It isn't clear what the exact criteria is for either one, so..."

"Then why don't we test it out with a demon?"

"Might as well kill him yourself."

"Ha! that'd be way more entertaining!"

Two more voices hung overhead.

The first was a very serious looking man. Unlike the other two, he seemed like an actual human. The only thing that would tell him apart are the giant wings folded on his back. He wore an oversized white coat with short brown hair that was well kept. The other one looked like his opposite; completely messy and unkept brown hair and a scratchy beard. His frame was larger than the others, but he covered it with a giant black t-shirt that looked like it hasn't been washed in years.

Mercedes turned and gave Sachi a quick smile. "Well, looks like everyone wants to watch your execution."

"This is everyone? I thought there was five names Gili called out for?"

She seemed to be puzzled for a moment. "Oh, Kata. That's just a ghost that's been rumored to be stuck here. She's the only reason this place hasn't be remolded and used for a different squad yet. Not that any of us have seen her before."

"R-right..."

She turned to David. "Where are you gonna find a demon? The guild has them all cleared out from the patrol routes."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small notebook. "I think I saw something earlier..." he flipped through the book rapidly. "Ah, here. Squad 51 was thought to be wiped out by a Demon on the small Isle of Dis. So if we head there and beat the demon, our reputation will skyrocket!"

Serendelle laughed. "And by 'we', you just mean making this guy fight until you can swoop in and take all the glory!"

David made a clear "zip it" motion to Serendelle. "It's either that, or we let the rest of the guild know there's a Champion here from a different realm. What do you say, Sachi?"

Sachi frowned. It was like nothing had changed since they were home.

"...Sure. Let's go."

The Devils each turned into their animal form. Serendelle back into a raven, Mercedes into what Sachi could only assume was a pigeon, the Devil Sachi assumed was Ali's turned into a hawk, and the last one, Gili's Devil, didn't change at all.

"Sorry, I won't fit into the boat. Just make sure to let me know how fast he gets killed, Mercedes." He said with a wink.

Gili sighed before turning to Sachi. "His animal is a bear, cause he wanted to hibernate."

"Oh."

He turned and left, following David and Pat out of the door. Ali didn't move yet.

Sachi walked and stopped parallel to Him. "Didn't expect you'd be the one to step in to save me."

Ali looked down at the rotting floor. "Don't get it twisted, I just didn't want the rest of the guild finding out we had any involvement. It would be easier if we claimed your Devil abandoned you and moved on."

Silence held the air for a moment. "...Thanks." Sachi headed towards the door and stepped out into Limbo once more.
