Chapter 2 - CH2: The Inheritance Clause.

‎Han Seoyoon slammed the heavy double doors open, the sudden crash fracturing the eerie, tomb-like silence of her grandfather's bedroom.

"Hello family," A cynical smirk crossed her lips. "Missed me?"

The air was thick, carrying the expensive, earthy scent of hinoki wood clashing against the sharp, sterile sting of antiseptics. In the perpetual twilight of the cavernous room, shielded from the sun by towering, motorized velvet drapes, the rhythmic, low hum of a hidden ventilator pulsed like a mechanical heartbeat.

And there, drowning in a massive bed beneath layers of silk duvets, lay the fearsome Chairman Han Myungsoo. He looked shockingly fragile, yet the room around him still projected absolute authority: sleek mahogany panels slid back to reveal a glowing grid of ICU monitors, a priceless traditional ink painting loomed opposite the bed.

A private nurse gasped, instantly stepping back, while the two other occupants, Han Seoyoon's uncle and aunt gaped at her like they'd seen a corpse risen from the dead.

"H-Han Seoyoon?!" Her aunt, Lim Hyeyoung stammered, her hands coming up to cover her mouth in shock.

With a small smile and a wiggle of her fingers, Han Seoyoon blew a kiss towards her which made the woman almost topple over.

"What are you doing here? How dare you show your face?!" Her uncle Han Taejun glared at her with barely concealed contempt.

"What? Am I not allowed to come?" Han Seoyoon gave a dramatic sigh and tilted her head. "Even if I have denounced you idiots in public, I'm unfortunately still recorded in the family genealogy chart."

"Eish-" Han Taejun took a step towards her but was held back by his wife.

"What are you doing here?" Han Taejun asked after taking a deep breath.

"Ask your father." Han Seoyoon's sarcastic smirk slid off her face smoothly as she turned to look at Chairman Han who was lying in bed with his eyes closed, seemingly asleep.

"I think he knows very well why I'm here."

Confused, Han Taejun looked to his father.

"Everyone leave." Han Myungsoo commanded, his eyes still closed. He had heard when Han Seoyoon had come in.

"But father-"

"Are you deaf? I said leave." Han Myungsoo repeated, his voice firm as he opened his eyes to glare at his son.

"Honey, let's go." Lim Hyeyoung took her husband's arm and dragged him out of the room, giving Han Seoyoon a scathing glare on her way out.

Only Chairman Han, Han Seoyoon and the nurse remained.

"Did you not hear him? Get out." Han Seoyoon shot the nurse a look so ice cold that it made her shiver.

"Ah, y-yes ma'am..." Gulping, the flustered nurse ran out of the room.

The silence in the room was heavy, the rhythmic beeping of the blood pressure machine echoing through the space.

"I didn't expect you to come. You were always so hard headed." Han Myungsoo took a sip of the cup of water on his bedside table.

"Give me the deed." She demanded.

"You've grown quite a spine, Seoyoon," Chairman Han murmured, his voice raspy but carrying a deep authority.

"To enter my home without an invitation, demanding land deeds. Is this how your parents raised you before they passed?"

Seoyoon did not flinch. She stood perfectly upright.

"Do not bring my parents into this. The Hae-won Botanical Estate belonged to my father. He bought it, he built it, and it was meant to transfer to me. Your construction division is planning to break ground on a luxury villa complex there next month. Call off the bulldozers, Chairman."

The old man let out a dry, rattling chuckle. He leaned to the slide slightly, pulled out a leather-bound folder from his bedside cabinet and tossed it to Han Seoyoon.

"Your father was a fool, but he was not entirely without foresight," Chairman Han said, leaning back. "He knew that if he died, I would eventually absorb his assets. So, he placed the Hae-won Estate into a conditional trust. Open it."

Seoyoon flicked her gaze to the documents. Her legal team had discovered the existence of the trust, but her grandfather's lawyers had blocked access to the specific terms. She opened the folder, her eyes rapidly scanning the elegant, traditional legal script.

Her heart stopped.

There, written in her father's own neat handwriting and legalized by his notary, was the clause:

"THE TITLE OF THE HAE-WON BOTANICAL GLASSHOUSE AND ITS SURROUNDING GROUNDS SHALL BE TRANSFERRED TO MY DAUGHTER, HAN SEOYOON, SOLELY UPON THE OCCASION OF HER LEGAL MARRIAGE, AS MY WEDDING GIFT TO HER."

"A wedding gift," Han Myungsoo sneered, his lips curling into a smug, victorious smile. "Your father wanted to ensure his headstrong daughter would find a husband to tame her. He knew a woman alone in our world is a target. And as the executor of his estate, I am legally bound to uphold his final wishes. Until you marry, the deed remains in my hands. And since the land is currently under Shindong Group's portfolio, I am entirely within my rights to develop it as I see fit."

"You are destroying my mother's camellias," Seoyoon said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "The very foundation of my brand's next global launch relies on those flowers. You are doing this on purpose."

"Of course I am," the Chairman admitted without an ounce of shame. "I've watched you build your little cosmetics company, Seoyoon. Haneul Beauty is performing remarkably well. But you've blocked three of my acquisition offers this year alone. You think you're a tigress, but you're just a cub playing in my backyard."

He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "So, I will give you two choices. First, you sign Haneul Beauty over to Shindong Group as a fully owned subsidiary. I will spare the glasshouse, and you can run it as an employee. Or second..." He paused, his smile widening. "...you get married. Show me a marriage certificate with a man of equal standing, a proper chaebol heir, and the Hae-won Estate is yours."

The silence in the room was suffocating.

Chairman Han knew he had won. He knew her reputation. The business world called her "The Tigress" because she was ruthless, cold, and entirely unyielding. No high-society bachelor wanted a wife who would outshine him in the boardroom, and Seoyoon would never demean herself by marrying a social climber just for a deed.

Worse, her grandfather was entirely unaware of the fresh, bleeding wound in her chest. Just seven months ago, her ex-fiancé had thrown his ring at her feet, shouting that she was impossible to love, a work-obsessed monster, before running off to marry a quiet, submissive neighborhood girl.

The breakup had shattered her confidence, leaving her jumpy, anxious, and deeply defensive about her own worth as a woman.

"You have thirty days before the demolition crew begins clearing the land," Chairman Han said, waving his hand dismissively. "Decide whether you want to yield your company to me, or find a man willing to tolerate you. Though we both know the former is much more realistic."

Seoyoon stared at her grandfather, her fists clenched so tightly her manicured nails bit into her palms. She refused to let him see her tremble.

Without a word, she spun on her heel and swept out of the room, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor as she slammed open the door as loudly as she entered.

As she marched downstairs, she passed Han Taejun and Lim Hyeyoung who stood at the base of the staircase watching her stalk out the mansion doors like an insulted tigress.

"Honey, what do you think father called her for?" Lim Hyeyoung looked at her husband worriedly. "You don't think it could be about the company inheritance do you?"

Pressing his lips together in a resolute line, Han Taejun looked upstairs.

"I don't know, but I'll find out."

◇◇◇

In the car on the ride back from the Han Mansion, Han Seoyoon rested her head against the car window, her left leg tapping against the floor restlessly.

Her mind went back to the day before when she had discovered that the greenhouse even existed and that it was meant to be hers.

◇◇◇

The floor-to-ceiling windows of Haneul Beauty's headquarters overlooked the glittering skyline of Gangnam, but Han Seoyoon's focus was entirely locked on the digital mock-ups of the new design of her global luxury perfume, Éclat de Camélia.

She was a perfectionist. Every detail, from the weight of the frosted glass bottles to the exact shade of gold on the packaging, had to be flawless.

She had spent nine years clawing her way to the top of the cosmetics industry, turning her modest, defunct local brand into a nationwide powerhouse.

To the public, she was "The Tigress," cold, untouchable, and utterly self-reliant.

A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts.

Attorney Min, her chief legal officer and one of the very few people she trusted, stepped into the office. His face was uncharacteristically pale, and he carried a thick, physical manila folder instead of his usual tablet.

"CEO Han," Min began, his voice tight. "We have a critical issue regarding our signature active ingredient, the White Camellia extract."

Seoyoon didn't look up from her monitor. "Is there a trademark dispute? We've owned the proprietary extraction method since we first launched the perfume."

"It's not the extraction method, ma'am," Attorney Min said, placing the folder on her desk. "It's the source. For the past four years, Haneul Beauty has purchased the Camelia flowers from an agricultural cooperative in Seongnam. We assumed it was a standard, independent supplier."

"Is it not?" Seoyoon finally raised her eyes, her sharp gaze pinning him.

"No. Last week our legal team was conducting a routine supply-chain audit for the U.S. FDA filing. When we traced the cooperative's parent company, we found it leads back to a dormant paper company called SY-Holdings. Which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of your grandfather's conglomerate, Shindong Group."

Seoyoon's posture went rigid. "My grandfather? He's been supplying our core ingredients this whole time? Why would he sell to us?"

"Because he doesn't oversee the agricultural subsidiaries and he didn't realize what it was until we filed for global exclusivity last month," Min explained, opening the folder to reveal satellite photos and property deeds. "And he didn't realize where it was coming from. Look at this."

He slid a satellite image toward her. It showed a hidden, sprawling estate nestled in the valleys of Seongnam, completely shrouded by dense pine forests. In the center of the estate sat a massive, breathtaking mid-century glasshouse, its intricate steel frames gleaming even from a satellite's view.

"What is this?" Seoyoon whispered, her heart skipping an erratic beat.

"It is the Hae-won Botanical Glasshouse," Attorney Min said softly. "... your father built it."

Seoyoon stared at the photo. Her breath caught in her throat. "My father? He built... a greenhouse?"

"He bought the land secretly sixteen years ago, right before he passed," Min said, reverting to a gentler tone he only used when they were strictly alone. "He built this state-of-the-art climate facility specifically for your mother, importing and breeding rare, soil-sensitive white camellias from across the world because her failing health made it impossible for her to travel. It is where she created the original formulas you use today. You didn't know about it because your grandfather's legal team seized the property deeds immediately after your parents' accident, keeping it locked away in a dormant trust."

A heavy, suffocating silence filled the executive office.

Seo-yoon trace her manicured finger over the glasshouse in the photo. Her father had built a sanctuary for her mother. A physical manifestation of a love so deep, her grandfather had tried to bury it forever out of sheer spite.

"Why am I only learning this now?" she asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

"I apologize, I should have informed you sooner." Attorney Min bowed his head slightly "However, Shindong Construction just got approval to rezone that entire valley. They are planning to break ground on a luxury villa complex next month. They are going to demolish the glasshouse, Seo-yoon. Every single one of those rare camellias will be destroyed."

"No!" Han Seoyoon shot up from her seat, her fists hitting the desk. "We cannot let that happen."

"Well as it so happens, Chairman Han's secretary sent an email this morning for a meeting. It says it's to discuss the terms around the acquisition of the greenhouse." Attorney Min spoke.

Seoyoon closed her eyes and took a deep breath before asking.

"Where?"

"The Han family mansion." Responded the Attorney.

All these years and she had tried to have as little altercations with her grandfather's conglomerate as possible, despite him constantly sending offers to have Haneul Beauty become a subsidiary. But it seemed that she would have to come face to face with the old fox again.

"Have my secretary clear my schedule for tomorrow"

◇◇◇

Haneul Beauty doesn't belong to Han Seoyoon's father's family, it belongs to her mother's family and she became the boss and took over to make it a bigger brand.
