The sun hung low over the rolling fields as Soen and Seid approached Bellforge. The village seemed peaceful at first glance — smoke curling from chimneys, the rhythmic clanging of metal from the forge, children laughing in the streets. But both moved cautiously, attuned to subtle irregularities in harmony, sensing something had changed.
"So, this is Bellforge," Seid murmured, eyes scanning the streets. "Seems… normal enough."
Soen didn't answer immediately. His gaze lingered on subtle differences — the shine of certain tools, the angles of plows, the edges of knives. Someone had worked here recently, someone meticulous.
They entered the forge itself, the heat and the familiar scent of iron greeting them. Willy wiped his hands on a cloth and looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes.
"Well now," he said, leaning against the bench. "I wasn't expecting visitors today. What brings you two here?"
"We need some minor repairs for our gear," Soen said, keeping his tone neutral. "Nothing major, just maintenance."
Willy's smile widened. "Repairs, eh? You're in the right place. Can't promise it'll be easy, though."
While Willy worked, Soen and Seid ate at a small table near the forge. The steelware — forks, knives, even small tools — caught Soen's attention. Some were sharper, straighter, and subtly more refined than the rest. It wasn't obvious, but the touch of a patient, skilled hand was there. Soen exchanged a glance with Seid, noting the quiet precision that spoke of unseen hands shaping the village, maintaining order, and improving daily life.
After days of observation, they moved toward a nearby village, intent on continuing their journey. But the road ahead held more than information — it held confrontation.
Dust rose in the distance, the formation of mounted figures unmistakable. At the head, a man on a dark horse, aura radiating command and disdain — Drom. His eyes locked onto Soen and Seid, registering them as anomalies in his organized world.
Soen dismounted, placing a steady hand on his sword. "Seid, be ready. These people… they aren't simple mercenaries."
Drom's voice carried across the field, sharp and cold. "Step aside. You cannot interfere. You are out of your depth."
Soen's gaze didn't waver. "We're not stepping aside. Not when people are being pulled like pieces on a board."
A lesser knight from Drom's cavalry surged forward, attempting a strike. In a flash, Soen dismounted, catching the knight by the arm, and with a precise movement smashed him to the ground, knocking him unconscious with one calculated strike. The other riders froze for a moment, eyes widening.
Drom gestured, dismissing his men. "You cannot handle him. Stand down."
Seid moved into position, trying to control the tension of the standoff. He launched a straight arrow at Drom, and immediately retracted, firing another arrow straight upward, intending it to strike Drom unexpectedly from above.
Drom's hand shot up, parrying both strikes. For a brief, tense pause, he assessed the trajectory, reading the arrow from above before reacting. With precise timing, he forced the arrow downward, redirecting it so that Seid's own shot struck his own shoulder, a sharp reminder of his strength under as one of the dison comanders.
The battle stretched on — blades clashing, arrows deflected, tension thick in the air. The precise orchestration of Drom's men forced Seid to react under immense pressure, while Soen's movements remained fluid, precise, but constrained. They were outnumbered, and Drom's control over his cavalry was absolute.
Finally, Drom raised a hand, commanding the retreat. "Enough. You will not win here. You cannot go against us."
Soen lowered his blade, breath steady but eyes unwavering. "Right now… if we continue, you could lose everything. You can't do that, can you?"
The cavalry pulled back, leaving only the cold echo of command. Soen and Seid stood firm, wounded but aware. The world was shifting, and the hand guiding Bellforge, Dissonia, and the surrounding villages had made itself clear.
Somewhere beyond the next hills, other moves were already being planned. The game was larger than one battle. And Soen and Seid were only beginning to understand the its scope.
