Chapter 499 - Chapter 499: Before the Tournament

Quite suddenly, a dull thud came from the other end of the call.

Silas froze.

"Oh dear, Urshifu, why did you knock Oak unconscious again?!"

"Roooar!"

Professor Rowan's helpless voice rang out, accompanied by a familiar roar from the bear Pokémon.

Silas' expression immediately became rather strange.

If Professor Oak's head gets damaged am I supposed to pay for that?

"Hello? Hello? Silas, are you still there?"

Professor Rowan called naturally from the other end.

Silas quickly came back to his senses.

"I'm here. Good morning, Professor Rowan. Is Professor Oak alright?"

"Don't worry."

Professor Rowan didn't seem concerned about the accident in the slightest.

"Oak's tough as nails. He'll wake up after sleeping for two or three hours. No need to worry. Besides, it'll force him to get some proper rest. After all, you've been sending back so many fascinating Pokémon. He hasn't had a proper break in quite some time."

Professor Rowan chuckled.

Silas finally relaxed.

It seemed this wasn't the first time Urshifu had forcefully knocked Professor Oak unconscious.

"Oh, right. Speaking of which, your Urshifu seems to be preparing to have a child."

Professor Rowan continued chatting casually.

"Yeah. I actually wandered into its territory while it was preparing, which is how our battle started."

Silas scratched his head awkwardly.

Thinking about it normally, he really did seem like the villain in that story.

"Well, since you've caught it, you should give it some advice as its Trainer. The poor thing still seems a little worried."

A smile appeared on Professor Rowan's usually serious face.

Standing beside him, Urshifu looked slightly embarrassed after hearing the conversation.

It still wasn't completely used to being caught by a human.

However, its gentle temperament meant it had no intention of resisting its Trainer's decisions.

After all, Silas and Blaziken had defeated it fairly in a head-on battle.

As a Fighting-type Pokémon, Urshifu respected strength.

If Silas needed its help and wanted it to postpone having its cub, Urshifu was fully prepared to do so.

"I don't have any objections."

After thinking for a moment, Silas understood what Urshifu was worried about.

While admiring how considerate the big fellow was, he gave a clear answer.

To him, a Elite-level Urshifu was undoubtedly an incredibly powerful addition to his team.

But, he didn't need that power right now.

Even if the Silver Conference started immediately, having both Pidgeot and Blaziken at Elite level was more than enough to guarantee strong results.

Besides, there was still plenty of time before the Silver Conference. His other partners certainly wouldn't remain stagnant.

"That's wonderful."

Professor Rowan smiled happily.

"In that case, I've gained another research topic."

"Hm?"

Silas looked puzzled.

"Professor Oak and I only recently learned the detailed reason why Urshifu is classified as a Legendary Pokémon from researchers in the Galar region. It reproduces in exactly the same manner as Legendary Pokémon rather than through the usual breeding and Egg-laying process.

The difference is that Legendary Pokémon generally don't have pre-evolutions or evolutions.

Urshifu does.

It first gives birth to a Kubfu, and Kubfu later grows stronger and evolves into one of Urshifu's two different forms. That's an enormous addition to my field of research."

Professor Rowan explained enthusiastically.

Simply put, Urshifu existed somewhere between ordinary Pokémon and Legendary Pokémon.

It was an exceptionally unique lifeform.

Naturally, that gave Professor Rowan, whose specialty was Pokémon evolution, countless new ideas.

After all, he'd never encountered anything like this before.

Listening to Professor Rowan becoming just as obsessed as Professor Oak, Silas suddenly felt the two Professors were about to completely destroy their sleep schedules.

I'd better call Cynthia later and ask her to check on them whenever she has time. Hopefully they don't work themselves sick.

Of course, that probably wouldn't happen.

The Pokémon League valued both Professors too highly.

The Joy family had even assigned a dedicated medical team to perform regular health checkups.

If not for the fact that the two of them always locked themselves inside their laboratories where nobody could enter, they probably wouldn't survive on nothing but Pokémon-flavored instant noodles every day.

Thud!

Before long, the excited Professor Rowan followed Professor Oak's footsteps.

"Thanks for your hard work, Urshifu. Focus on preparing for your cub. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask the two Professors. They're both rich."

Silas said with a grin.

"Rooo."

Urshifu gave a low growl in acknowledgment.

Since it concerned its future child, it certainly wasn't going to be polite.

After ending the call, Silas shook his head helplessly.

It wasn't his fault his luck was simply too good.

Otherwise, the two Professors wouldn't have had to work so hard.

But what could he do?

He shrugged.

After finishing his morning routine in the bathroom, he changed into his usual sleeveless T-shirt and walked out of the Pokémon Center.

The handsome young man immediately attracted the attention of quite a few people and Pokémon.

Stretching lazily beneath the morning sun, Silas let out a deep breath.

This was the first time in months that he'd gone out without wearing a mask.

It really had been a long time.

Major events happened every day across the world. As time passed, people's memories of Silas as Ho-Oh's Messenger gradually faded.

Unless someone had deliberately memorized his appearance, his now much longer hair simply made him look like an ordinary handsome teenager.

No one would connect him with Ho-Oh's Messenger.

Next time I meet Janine, I'll definitely ask her for some kind of disguise mask.

Masks are such a pain.

Walking leisurely through the city streets, Silas already had a destination in mind.

"The preliminary rounds don't start until noon. This morning... I might as well visit the island across the water, Pidgey Island."

Standing along the coastline, he looked curiously toward the small island in the distance.

"Let's go, Pidgeot. Time to meet some of your own kind."

"Piiidgeot!"

Trainer and Pokémon soared into the sky together over the coastline.

Fortunately, it was still early in the morning and there weren't many people nearby. Otherwise, once Pidgeot appeared, Silas' identity would have been impossible to hide.

"So they use a suspension bridge? That's a pretty dangerous way to travel."

Since they weren't in a hurry, Pidgeot flew slowly enough for Silas to lean over and look down.

Connecting the two islands was a narrow bridge made of only three iron chains and a thin layer of wooden planks, swaying constantly in the sea breeze.

Beneath the seemingly calm ocean surface lurked one massive whirlpool after another.

Forget ordinary boats, even many fairly powerful Pokémon would struggle to swim safely through those waters.

"Pidgey..."

"Pidgey..."

Faint cries drifted over from the island.

"Looks like your fellow Pidgey have already noticed you. Let's go take a look."

Silas smiled as he patted Pidgeot's back.

In an instant, Pidgeot accelerated to top speed.

"Hello. I'm Wilbur, the caretaker of this island. May I ask who you are...?"

The moment they landed, a Trainer dressed like a Pokémon Ranger walked over to greet them.

Without hesitation, Silas took out his Pokédex to verify his identity.

After checking the Pokédex information, Wilbur visibly relaxed.

"So you're here to investigate the unusual characteristics of the Pidgey on this island too, Trainer Silas?"

Silas silently nodded.

Then, after looking around, he shook his head.

"So are all the Pidgey here really this fat?"

Wilbur smiled bitterly.

"Yeah. Since there are no natural predators like Spearow or Ekans, the Pidgey here have all grown rather oversized."

Oversized?

Silas silently sighed.

He had known about the island beforehand, but the size of these Pidgey still exceeded his expectations.

Have you ever seen a Pidgey as large as a normal Pidgeotto?

They were everywhere.

Ever seen a Pidgeotto noticeably larger than an ordinary Pidgeot?

Those were everywhere too.

Unfortunately none of them possessed much actual combat ability.

Their massive size came purely from overeating.

Pidgeot stared speechlessly as countless members of its species hopped around on the ground.

These birds couldn't even fly.

They were an embarrassment to Flying-type Pokémon.

They might as well be buried underground.

"Looks like I was overthinking things."

Silas rubbed his forehead.

He had originally come hoping these unusually large Pidgey and Pidgeotto possessed some special trait that might help Pidgeot improve even further.

After all, his own Pidgeot's size was already vastly different from ordinary members of its species, meaning many standard flying techniques had to be adjusted specifically for its body.

That alone was an incredibly complicated task.

Silas had hoped these oversized birds might provide some inspiration.

Instead they simply couldn't fly.

"Piiidgeot..."

Pidgeot quickly lost interest.

Although it had been a long time since seeing others of its own species.

It genuinely didn't want to acknowledge these birds as relatives.

It glanced toward its Trainer.

"If that's all there is, let's head back."

Silas sighed helplessly.

"We've already wasted enough time."

After saying goodbye to Wilbur, he climbed back onto Pidgeot's back, and they began flying toward the mainland.

Watching the young Trainer disappear toward Red Rock Isle, Wilbur couldn't help sighing as well.

"When are you all finally going to show a little ambition?"

What he didn't notice was that one Pidgey slightly smaller than the others around it had fallen into deep thought while watching Pidgeot fly away.

It then turned toward the wooden cabin where Wilbur lived.

Outside hung a painting depicting the sun, moon, stars and a proud Pidgey.

A different light suddenly appeared in the little Pidgey's eyes.

Meanwhile Silas enjoyed the breathtaking scenery unique to the Whirl Islands.

"Lanturn migration now that's an incredible sight."

Putting away his Pokégear, he gazed at the countless Lanturn swimming beneath them and couldn't help marveling at nature.

Then another random thought crossed his mind.

"Are you sure this isn't some giant Fish Stampede? Did Digimon accidentally wander into the Pokémon world or something?"

Pidgeot tilted its head.

Digimon?

What kind of Pokémon is that?

I've never heard of it.

"It's the story of a group of chosen children and the partners who fought beside them."

Silas gently stroked Pidgeot's feathers while recounting memories from his previous life.

To him, those memories had already become vague.

The ones he remembered most clearly were naturally those involving creatures similar to Pokémon.

Pidgeot quietly listened while steadily beating its wings.

Among the drifting white clouds trainer and Pokémon moved together in perfect harmony.

Inland City, Red Rock Isle

Ancient Coliseum

The arena looked remarkably similar to the Roman Colosseum from Silas' previous life.

Its unique feature, it stood in the middle of the sea.

Apart from four massive supporting pillars, six small floating battle platforms, and one large central platform.

Everything else lay submerged beneath the water.

"More than two thousand participants?

That's quite a number."

Recalling the information Nurse Joy had given him earlier, Silas clicked his tongue.

This was only a small tournament announced at the last minute.

Yet more than two thousand Trainers had registered within a single day.

That alone demonstrated how popular the Whirl Cup was among Water-type Trainers.

If competitors around the world had been given sufficient notice.

Silas suspected the total number of participants might have rivaled a regional League Conference.

"Still quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality."

A faint blue glow flickered deep within his eyes as he quietly scanned the Trainers and the Pokémon they had released nearby.

His mood relaxed considerably.

Beginner.

Beginner.

Normal.

Normal.

Advance.

Beginner...

Out of seven or eight Pokémon he examined.

Only one had reached the Advance level.

Compared with both the Rising Dragon Trial and a regional League Conference, the average strength of the Trainers here was noticeably lower.

After all, earning eight official Gym Badges required genuine skill.

Even obtaining the token needed for the Rising Dragon Trial wasn't easy.

The Whirl Cup, on the other hand, allowed anyone to register.

Thinking about it.

One of Silas' friends, Ako, the niece of Johto's Ice-type Elite Four member had reached the Top Eight during her very first year as a Trainer.

That certainly showcased her talent.

But it also reflected the relatively modest level of the overall competition.

If a rookie Trainer could reach the Top Eight, Were these people even good at Pokémon battles?

Silas didn't realize his reasoning had gone slightly off track.

After all the only Pokémon he had registered was Prinplup, who was also only around the same level as many of the surrounding Trainers.

The only real advantage was that Prinplup was a starter Pokémon.

Unfortunately a pure Water-type like Prinplup absolutely hated facing Pokémon such as Chinchou, whose Water/Electric typing attacked both physically and psychologically.

Silas leisurely made his way toward his assigned preliminary battlefield.

There were sixteen separate venues across Inland City handling the elimination rounds.

He had been assigned to Venue C.

All he needed to do here was win five consecutive 1-on-1 battles to qualify for the Top 64 and advance to the Ancient Coliseum for the main tournament.

"Prinplup I'm counting on you."

"Prin!"
