Sung-Min walked back to his apartment with the morning sun warming his back, but the chill from the night before still clung to his bones. The streets of Hongdae were waking up—vendors setting up stalls, students rushing to early classes, the distant hum of scooters cutting through the air. Everything looked normal. Nothing felt normal.
He stopped at the corner store, bought a can of cold coffee and a pack of cigarettes he didn't even smoke anymore. Old habit. Something to hold.
When he finally reached his building, he paused at the entrance. A black car he didn't recognize was parked across the street. Tinted windows. Engine off. No one inside that he could see. Probably nothing. Probably everything.
He shook it off and climbed the stairs.
Inside his apartment, the soju bottle still sat empty on the table like an accusation. He ignored it, dropped onto the couch, and finally checked his phone properly.
Missed calls:
Soo-Jin (4)Ji-Yeon (1, at 4:12 AM)Unknown number (2)
Messages from Min-Soo: "You think hiding behind cameras and words will save you? I know where you live, fucker." Sent at 3:47 AM.
Sung-Min stared at the screen. No system notification popped up this time. Maybe it was waiting. Watching. Judging how he'd handle the mess he'd made.
He typed a reply to Soo-Jin first. "Meet me at the café after your shift ends. We'll talk. Stay safe until then."
Then to the unknown number (he guessed it was Tae-Ho): nothing. Silence was safer.
Ji-Yeon's missed call he left unanswered. Her last text still burned in his mind: Don't come anymore.
He stood up, opened the window to let fresh air in, and lit one of the cigarettes anyway. The smoke tasted bitter. Like regret.
The system finally flickered to life in the corner of his vision, pale blue letters hovering like a ghost.

Sung-Min exhaled smoke toward the ceiling.
"Fuck your quests," he muttered.
The system didn't respond. It never did when he talked back.
His phone buzzed again.
Soo-Jin: "Okay. I finish at 6. Please be there. I'm really scared, Sung-Min."
He replied with a simple thumbs-up emoji. Cold. Efficient. The same way he'd handled everything lately.
Around noon, another message arrived from an unknown number. No text. Just a photo.
It was blurry, taken from across the street: him sitting on the bench with Eun-Ha that morning. Her scarf, his hoodie. The moment before she kissed his cheek.
Below the photo: "You're collecting them all, huh? How many more before someone collects you?"
Sung-Min deleted the photo immediately. Blocked the number. But the damage was done. The image was already seared into his mind.
He spent the afternoon cleaning the apartment—something mindless to keep his hands busy. Wiped surfaces that didn't need wiping. Folded clothes he rarely wore. Tried not to think about Ji-Yeon's tear on the pillow, or the way Tae-Ho had looked at her like she was already gone.
By 5:50 he was walking toward Café Luna again. The same route. The same alley where he'd taken Soo-Jin against the wall just yesterday. It felt like weeks ago.
Soo-Jin was waiting outside when he arrived, arms wrapped around herself even though the evening wasn't cold. Her eyes were puffy. Makeup hastily fixed.
She didn't hug him. Just nodded toward the café.
"Inside. Eun-Bi's not here today."
They sat at the same back table. She ordered nothing. He ordered two iced Americanos out of habit.
"I told Min-Soo we're done," she said quietly once the drinks arrived. "He laughed. Said I don't get to decide that."
Sung-Min stirred his coffee even though he hadn't added sugar.
"He sent me a photo this morning. Of me and… someone else."
Soo-Jin's eyes widened. "Eun-Ha?"
He nodded.
"Shit." She rubbed her temples. "What are we doing, Sung-Min? This was supposed to be fun. Secret. Hot. Not… this."
He looked at her. Really looked. The nervous energy, the fear mixed with lingering attraction. She was still beautiful. Still wanted him. But the thrill was cracking.
"I don't know anymore," he admitted. First honest thing he'd said in days.
She reached across the table and took his hand. Her fingers were cold.
"Then stop. Before someone gets hurt for real."
Sung-Min didn't pull away. But he didn't squeeze back either.
The system pinged softly.

He paid for the drinks. Walked Soo-Jin to the bus stop. Gave her a quick, almost brotherly hug.
"Lay low. I'll handle Min-Soo."
She looked like she wanted to say more. Instead she just nodded and got on the bus.
Back in his apartment that night, Sung-Min stood at the window again. The black car was gone. Replaced by the feeling that eyes were everywhere.
His phone lit up one last time.
Ji-Yeon: "Tae-Ho packed a bag. He's staying at a friend's. Said he needs time to think. I think it's over. And I hate that part of me is relieved."
Sung-Min stared at the message until the screen went dark.
He didn't reply.
Instead he lay down on the bed, fully clothed, and closed his eyes.
The castle wasn't just cracking anymore.
Whole walls were starting to crumble.
And somewhere in the rubble, Sung-Min wondered if he still wanted to be the one standing on top when everything finally came down.
