Following Laufey, Ethan Hunt and Luna descended deeper into the iceberg. The interior was impossibly vast and cavernous. Despite the total absence of sunlight, the space was far from dark. Glowing, root-like veins crawled across the cave walls, webbing together like a sprawling organic network.
Pulses of psychedelic, iridescent light surged through the veins, flowing ever downward into the depths. The bioluminescence cast a breathtaking, aurora-like glow that illuminated the cavern.
"These are... the reverberations of Ymir's nervous system after his death," Luna murmured, her eyes tracking the pulsing lights. Even though Odin had slain Ymir, the progenitor giant had also been a literal Tree of Life. Even in death, remnants of his cosmic biology endured, much like the Casket of Ancient Winters she currently carried.
Laufey ignored her observation, simply quickening her pace. Eventually, she led them into a sealed, hollowed-out chamber at the very bottom of the abyss. Here, the glowing veins converged, twisting together to form a colossal trunk nearly ten meters high. It was the central nervous system of a dead god, calcified into wood and ice.
At the base of this twisted structure sat a small, pristine spring, barely a meter across. It was ringed by jagged ice and smooth, milky-white stones. A single, petrified branch extended directly over the pool, dripping a clear, luminescent liquid into the water below.
Stepping closer to the edge, Ethan peered into the crystalline water. Resting at the very bottom of the spring was a massive, perfectly preserved eyeball.
"You've likely heard the myths," Luna said, stepping up beside him. Her eyes reflected the strange, ambient light. "This is the legendary Fountain of Wisdom."
"The stories say drinking from it allows you to see the past and the future, and grants unfathomable cosmic knowledge," Ethan noted curiously. "Is any of that actually true?"
"I've never tasted it myself. You should ask her," Luna said, gesturing toward Laufey.
Laufey turned to face them, her expression unreadable in the glowing cavern. "The effects vary wildly from person to person. However, the waters of the well can indeed reveal or grant something of extreme importance to the one who drinks."
She paused, her gaze lingering on the spring. "That you made it this far proves my father's lingering will has accepted your presence. You may drink."
"Well, I certainly won't decline," Luna said briskly. Without a second of hesitation, she knelt, cupped the freezing water in her hands, and took a drink.
Almost immediately, a spark of profound realization flashed in her eyes. She closed them, slipping into a silent, meditative trance as she processed whatever ancient knowledge had just flooded her mind.
Seeing Luna unharmed, Ethan didn't hesitate. He scooped up a handful of the liquid and swallowed it. The water was shockingly cold, carrying a faint, sweet aftertaste.
The moment it slid down his throat, a surge of alien energy erupted within his chest. It shot directly up his spine and exploded into his brain. A blinding torrent of incomprehensible images flashed behind Ethan's eyes.
When his vision finally cleared, Laufey, Luna, and the subterranean ice palace were entirely gone. Ethan found himself standing in the middle of an alien metropolis.
The city was built into towering desert rock formations, its architectural style completely foreign to human history. The citizens scurrying through the streets were just as alien—bipedal, reptilian creatures with vibrant green scales and long, thick tails.
Right now, those lizard-like beings were trembling, collapsed on their knees as they stared up at the sky in absolute terror. Ethan followed their gaze. Descending slowly through the atmosphere was a colossal, humanoid titan.
The entity was easily two thousand feet tall, clad in impenetrable golden armor, and gripping a massive staff inlaid with a brilliantly glowing purple gem.
'That's the Power Stone,' Ethan realized with a sharp jolt of dread. 'Which makes that titan Eson the Searcher.'
Staring up at the towering god, Ethan felt the blood drain from his face. The sheer divine pressure radiating from the entity was suffocating, operating on an entirely different scale than the demigod auras of Odin or Luna. The pressure crushed down on Ethan's vector field, making it difficult to even breathe.
Every cell in his body screamed in primal, genetic terror—the inescapable dread of prey standing before an apex predator.
"Unqualified," a cold, booming, mechanical voice echoed simultaneously within the minds of every living creature on the planet. It was an absolute, emotionless judgment.
Total panic erupted across the city. Reptilian aliens groveled and begged the Celestial for mercy. Others scrambled into sleek flying vehicles in a desperate bid to escape. A brave, foolish few actually launched themselves toward the golden god, attempting to fight back like ants trying to stop a speeding train.
Their efforts were entirely futile. The Celestial completely ignored the frantic insects below. It simply lowered its massive staff and slammed the butt of the weapon into the planet's crust.
The purple gem flared with blinding intensity. A catastrophic shockwave of apocalyptic energy erupted from the point of impact, sweeping across the entire globe in an unstoppable tide of violet destruction.
The warriors were instantly vaporized. The fleeing supersonic aircraft were swallowed by the extinction wave, their hulls dissolving into ash. The sky literally tore open. Majestic mountain ranges were blasted into nothingness, and the sprawling oceans boiled away in a fraction of a second, as if the world were a painting being violently erased from a canvas.
A civilization that had likely evolved over billions of years—complete with its own culture, written language, and heroes—was utterly annihilated. In less than three seconds, the alien race and their home world ceased to exist.
The apocalyptic energy tore Ethan's consciousness apart. When he managed to gather his senses again, the ruined planet was gone. He was now floating in a higher cosmic dimension, suspended above the conventional universe.
Massive, incomprehensible instruments drifted through the void. A gathering of titans—beings identical to the one that had just destroyed the reptilian world—stood before the machines, carefully charting out the fundamental laws of life for countless planets. Displayed on the nearest holographic interface were looping feeds of planetary civilizations being systematically wiped out.
The Celestials weren't paying attention to the screens. They were huddled together, radiating a profound, overwhelming sense of despair. A sorrowful female voice echoed directly into Ethan's mind.
"The Great Will created us," the voice lamented. "And we, in turn, have created countless worlds, offering our glory to the Great Will. But there is no response. The Great Will has abandoned us. We cannot fulfill His expectations."
Another booming, authoritative voice resonated through the void, drawing murmurs of agreement from the assembled cosmic entities. "Why does creation exist? What is the purpose of our work, and what is the meaning of our existence? This cycle must end. To attain true glory, we must enact a genuine, absolute creation."
"But creation necessitates destruction," the sorrowful female voice returned. "We must sacrifice a part to create anew. Who is willing to offer themselves as a sacrifice for creation, to return to the Great Will?"
Every single Celestial rose to their feet. Slowly, their massive bodies began to emit a blinding, incandescent golden light. The surging energy began to devour everything within the higher dimension, fusing the titans together into a colossal, golden sphere of pure, unfiltered divine power.
It burned like a cosmic sun, instantly ripping through the fabric of time and space as it plummeted madly toward the dimension of reality. A unified chorus of voices echoed through the tearing dimensional rifts.
"Sacrifice is honorable! It will—and must—be answered!"
"Only true creation can allow us to feel glory and return our souls to the Great Will!"
"Destruction is creation! The new world, and the moment of our absolute glory, shall be born from this!"
"What the hell is this?" Ethan shouted in horror, just before the golden sun of endless divine power swallowed his consciousness entirely.
"Ethan!"
The blinding light shattered into darkness, and a voice sharply pierced his ears. Ethan gasped, his senses snapping back to reality. He was half-kneeling on the freezing cavern floor, panting heavily. Cold sweat soaked through his clothes.
Luna was crouched in front of him, her face etched with rare, genuine worry. She had never seen Ethan lose his composure so completely. If she hadn't personally experienced a smooth, enlightening realization of complex magical theory after drinking from the spring, she would have immediately assumed Laufey had poisoned them.
"What did you just see?" Luna asked quietly.
Ethan didn't answer her. Instead, he slowly lifted his head and locked eyes with the Frost Queen. "Is everything shown by the Fountain of Wisdom the absolute truth?"
'Just what kind of cosmic karma am I tangled up in?' Ethan thought, a chill running down his spine that had nothing to do with the ice. A single sip of water had seemingly allowed him to eavesdrop on the fundamental, existential crisis of the universe's creators.
"The visions have very little to do with the fountain itself," Laufey replied calmly. "The water merely acts as a catalyst. What you are shown is dictated entirely by the karmic threads entangled with your own destiny."
Laufey tilted her head, studying Ethan's pale face. "However, it is incredibly rare for anyone to have such a violent reaction. Not long ago, another human found her way down here. Her reaction was intense, though not quite as visceral as yours."
Ethan's head snapped up. "Wait. Another human was here before me?" He quickly connected the dots. "Was her name the Ancient One?"
"It was," Laufey nodded softly. "She was a remarkably unique mortal. She told me she was searching for hope. After we struck a bargain, I allowed her to drink from the fountain."
Laufey narrowed her crimson eyes. "Before she departed, she left a message. She told me that if another human ever arrived here and recognized her title, I was to pass on the key piece of the puzzle she had discovered."
"A key piece of the puzzle?" Ethan asked, his voice tight with anticipation. "What is it?"
Laufey looked down at him, her voice echoing softly off the glacial walls. "Titan."
