Chapter 507: Where Did You Find These Three Weirdos?
Steven actually had a fairly good impression of the green-haired policewoman. Mainly because her attitude toward him was noticeably different—she was easier to talk to. And if the other party was willing to be reasonable, he didn't mind having a proper conversation either.
So Steven and the other two cooperatively put on the handcuffs and followed the two female officers into the building labeled [Lungmen Guard Department].
To be honest, this was Steven's first time entering a place like a police station. Naturally, he looked around with curious eyes.
The Minecrafter didn't seem like a suspect at all, more like a tourist visiting for a tour.
"Yo, isn't this Officer Ch'en? If I remember correctly, today's supposed to be your day off. What brings you back to handle a case? Should I praise you for your dedication?"
Before Steven and the others could be taken to a holding cell, a somewhat sweet voice—one that hardly seemed to belong in a police station—rang out. Soon after, a girl dressed as a police officer, yet somehow completely unlike one, approached them.
As for why she didn't seem like a real police officer, Steven couldn't quite put it into words. But generally speaking, police officers don't usually carry high-end designer bags, nor use obviously expensive cosmetics and perfume, right?
Rather than a police officer, she looked more like a wealthy young lady cosplaying in a police uniform. The aura of affluence radiating from her was practically overflowing.
"Missy, stop poking at Old Ch'en's sore spot. She was just complaining to me about this. There's official business to handle first, once we're done, I'll treat you to a drink."
The green-haired officer smoothly took over the conversation. Judging by the gloomy look on Ch'en's silent face, this could easily have escalated into a small workplace conflict.
She pointed at Steven and the others, briefly explaining the situation.
"Forget it, Hoshiguma. I'm afraid if I drink that cheap stuff you treat me to, I won't even be able to get out of bed the next day. Why not come to my place instead? I'll treat you to some Victoria specialty red wine my old man brought back for me."
"As for you, Sir Ch'en, if you're willing to say something nice to me, I wouldn't mind bringing you along. Wouldn't want you accusing me of excluding colleagues."
Waving at the green-haired officer named Hoshiguma, the blonde Feline, exuding that legendary rich-lady aura from head to toe, glanced at Ch'en before blinking playfully as she extended the invitation.
"No thanks. I need to finish this first before I enjoy my vacation. Your goodwill, you mischievous cat, is something I can't afford to accept."
Ch'en rolled her eyes at the girl in front of her. It wasn't that she bore any real hostility, it's just that the girl had tricked her more than once before. Not long ago, she'd even ended up pulling lipstick and perfume out of her bag instead of a baton and handcuffs when confronting suspects. That wasn't something easily forgotten.
"Oh come on, you're still hung up over that? Why so petty? If it really bothers you, how about you hand this case over to me? Consider it my way of making it up to you."
As she spoke, the blonde Feline walked over to Steven and the other two, observing the suspects with curious eyes.
Lungmen was an international metropolis, after all. But even so, encountering such an oddly configured trio wasn't exactly common.
Leaving aside Centaurea—the rare white-haired Kuranta. Although most of that race gathered in Kazimierz and thus counted as foreign visitors in Lungmen, the race of the one standing beside her, Mostima, was even stranger.
She had the characteristic LED-like halo unique to Sankta, yet also bore the demon-like twin horns typical of Sarkaz. What kind of race was that supposed to be? It certainly wasn't something an ordinary person could easily identify.
As for Steven, he was even stranger. Having no racial characteristics whatsoever was, in itself, an extremely odd phenomenon.
Ch'en really had a knack for rounding up peculiar groups. This trio practically screamed "we've got a story."
And the more unusual it was, the more interesting it became. A case like this? Of course she wanted in on it.
"I don't have any objections. The problem is, this involves Old Wei. We'll have to see what he says."
Ch'en shot the somewhat annoying little cat a glance. After making herself a cup of instant coffee, she grabbed a notebook and led Steven and the other two into a dimly lit small room.
"It's related to Uncle Wei? Then forget it. I have no desire to bring trouble upon myself. For tricky cases like this, it's better to leave it to a professional like you. I'd rather not get involved."
Upon hearing that the matter was connected to Wei Yenwu, the blonde girl immediately distanced herself from Steven's group. She knew very well that anything involving "Uncle Wei" was rarely good news. It was wiser not to join the fun this time.
As Ch'en began taking statements from Steven's group, the blonde Feline returned to her post and started tinkering with the drones on her desk.
On Steven's side, Ch'en seemed to follow Mostima's earlier suggestion and brought her alone into the interrogation room first, leaving Steven and Centaurea—clearly the more troublesome pair—outside under Hoshiguma's supervision.
"Hey, Officer Hoshiguma… Are all of you police—oh, sorry, Guard Department officers—this… how should I put it… lacking in yang energy?"
Steven was never one to sit still. Expecting him to remain quiet and behave was unrealistic. Barely two minutes had passed before he struck up a conversation with the green-haired officer, who was looking equally bored and nearly dozing off.
From their earlier exchange, it seemed the three young women were all high-ranking figures within the Guard Department. Such a female-dominated scene in a police organization was, admittedly, a bit rare.
"Lacking yang energy? This is clearly the most righteous place there is! Even demonic monsters wouldn't dare cause trouble here. How could we be lacking in yang energy?"
Clearly misunderstanding Steven's meaning, Hoshiguma frowned slightly, though she didn't refuse to chat.
She had already contacted Wei Yenwu, who replied that he would come personally to handle the matter. From the tone of his response, Hoshiguma could more or less tell that Steven and the others probably weren't enemies of Lungmen after all.
"Uh, never mind that question. But can I ask—what exactly is the background of this Wei guy?"
Seeing that Hoshiguma was more of a straightforward, big-sister type, Steven dropped the teasing tone and instead asked what was on his mind.
Hearing the question, Hoshiguma looked even more confused.
Steven had been the one to say that name earlier, yet now he seemed completely clueless about who the man was? Was he deliberately provoking her, or did he genuinely not know?
After meeting Steven's gaze for a moment, Hoshiguma chose to believe the latter. It was hard to fake that look in his eyes—he didn't seem like he was provoking her.
"I can't talk too much about Chief Wei," Hoshiguma said, "but there's one thing I can make clear. You asked what his background is? Almost everyone in Lungmen knows. Wei Yenwu is Lungmen's ruler. You can think of him as the city's leader. Put that way, you get it now, right?"
None of this thing was confidential information. If anything, the strange part was that Steven—someone who had at least heard of Lungmen—didn't know who Wei Yenwu was. That was what seemed absurd.
"Huh? So does that mean we probably don't need to worry about being detained this time?"
Steven didn't expect Kal'tsit and Nian to have such powerful connections. Right from the start, they'd handed him the backing of a city ruler. Didn't that mean he could practically do whatever he wanted in Lungmen?
Of course, how far the other party would actually go for him remained to be seen. Steven wasn't naïve enough to trust a political leader, either.
"That depends on whether he recognizes you when he gets here," Hoshiguma replied. "If he doesn't, your charges might even get worse, you know?"
Seeing that Steven had completely focused on the wrong point, she could only smile helplessly and offer the reminder.
"That's not a big problem. I may not have much, but I do have some influence. At the very least, getting out of this situation shouldn't be too hard."
Steven patted his chest proudly, boasting to the two women in front of him.
Only then did he realize that his companion, Centaurea, hadn't been paying much attention to him at all. Instead, her gaze had been fixed on the blonde Feline who had spoken earlier.
"What's wrong? Curious about that little rich lady? Don't you already have a big boss like me to rely on?"
"No," she replied seriously. "I was just thinking… how does she manage to stand there and instantly make everyone think she's definitely rich? I feel like I should learn that skill too. Otherwise, I'm afraid I won't be able to spend all the money you've given me."
