Houston had already lost control.
The Western Conference contestants walked out first, and it took them all of five seconds to realize the noise had nothing to do with them.
"LIN—YI!"
"LIN—YI!"
"LIN—YI!"
Eric Bledsoe glanced toward Blake Griffin on the sideline. Griffin didn't even try to hide it; he just gave him that look again. The same one from earlier.
Told you so.
Bledsoe exhaled under his breath. "Yeah… this is rough."
Jeremy Evans folded his arms, shaking his head. "Last year, I won it, and they booed the whole time. This year, I'm not even getting booed. That might be worse."
"Feels personal," he added after a beat.
Kenneth Faried scratched the back of his head, confused. "Ain't this supposed to be our side? Why does it feel like an away game?"
Across the floor, Gerald Green muttered to James White, "We're basically extras tonight."
White let out a dry laugh. "Extras with front-row seats."
Up in a suite, Tracy McGrady leaned back beside Yao Ming, watching the scene unfold.
McGrady smiled, slow and knowing. "Now you see why I stayed out of this thing."
Yao glanced at the court, then back at him. "You're saying there was no point?"
"There really wasn't," McGrady replied. "Not when it turns into this."
On the broadcast, Charles Barkley didn't bother holding back.
"Wrap it up," he said, waving a hand. "It's done already. We're just going through the motions now."
Next to him, Shaquille O'Neal looked like he wanted to argue, then glanced around at the crowd.
Everywhere he looked, people were on their feet for Lin Yi.
He paused, then shrugged. "Yeah… I got nothing."
Courtside, Tim Duncan watched the crowd with a small nod. "This feels familiar."
Kobe Bryant clapped with the audience. "It's bigger than familiar, Tim. This is another level."
Nearby, LeBron James leaned toward Dwyane Wade. "You ever think about doing it?"
Wade raised an eyebrow. "Now? In this?"
LeBron watched the court for a second longer. "Yeah… maybe not."
At center court, the host walked straight past everyone else and stopped in front of Lin Yi.
"Lin, what's the plan tonight?"
The other contestants didn't even try to hide it this time. That one stung.
Lin Yi looked up toward the rafters, then back at the host.
"I think you've got the order wrong," he said calmly. "You should talk to them first."
The host blinked. "Oh?"
Lin Yi nodded toward the line of contestants.
"Ask them who's taking second."
For a split second, there was silence.
Then the arena exploded.
In the stands, Scarlett Johansson jumped to her feet, clapping, while Taylor Swift laughed, shaking her head.
Back near the bench, Klay Thompson jogged over and bumped chests with Lin Yi.
"That was clean," Klay said, grinning. "I'm stealing that next year."
Lin Yi gave him a look. "Don't."
"Too late," Klay replied. "Already locked in."
Lin Yi shook his head, almost laughing. "You're going to get yourself in trouble."
When the contest finally started, Gerald Green stepped up first.
He finished strong, with a clean execution, power, and control.
He landed, looked up.
Some cheers.
Then, faint but clear, the same chant started again.
"LIN—YI!"
Green pressed his lips together. "Come on, man…"
By the time Lin Yi's turn came, nobody was sitting.
Phones were up everywhere, lights flickering across the arena like a field of stars.
David Stern watched from the stands, arms crossed, already regretting the format.
"Should've put him last," he muttered.
Lin Yi stepped onto the court, calm, almost casual.
No theatrics. No buildup.
He tossed the ball forward, took two controlled steps, and rose.
Mid-air, he shifted the ball behind his body, smooth and effortless.
Then switched hands before he hammered it down.
The rim shook.
For a second, the arena froze.
Then everything broke loose.
Barkley jumped out of his seat. "That's it! I'm done!"
"Everybody go home!"
Even the judges didn't bother pretending to think.
Perfect scores across the board.
Back near the baseline, Green just stared. "Yeah… we shouldn't have signed up for this."
White nodded slowly. "Not our night."
Faried shook his head, half laughing now. "I get it. I really get it now."
Lin Yi walked back toward the sideline, breathing steadily.
For him, it was just one dunk.
. . .
By the time the second round came around, the result already felt decided.
There was still a contest on paper, but inside the Toyota Center, everyone knew who the night belonged to.
For his next attempt, Lin Yi waved someone over from the front row.
Scarlett Johansson looked surprised at first, then laughed as she stepped onto the court, holding the ball near the free-throw line.
Lin Yi walked up to her, relaxed, like this was just another rep in practice.
"You good?" he asked, glancing at the ball in her hands.
Scarlett raised an eyebrow, amused. "I think so. Should I be worried?"
Lin Yi shook his head, a faint smile forming.
"No. Just hold it steady."
She nodded. "Alright."
Lin Yi gave her shoulder a light tap, more reassuring than dramatic.
"Stay right there," he said. "You're part of this now."
Scarlett laughed softly. "No pressure, right?"
"None," Lin replied. "I'll handle the rest."
He stepped back, turning away as the noise in the arena started to build again.
By the time he reached the baseline, the energy had shifted.
Everyone was on their feet.
Kobe Bryant leaned toward Tim Duncan. "He's not serious… from there?"
Duncan watched quietly. "He looks very serious."
Lin Yi took off.
One step into the lane, clean gather, then mid-air, the ball slipped between his legs, switched hands, and came down hard through the rim.
The reaction was instant.
The arena shook again.
Back at the broadcast table, Charles Barkley was already on his feet.
"I don't even know what to call that anymore," he said, half laughing. "This is different. Speechless. Just speechless."
Perfect scores, again.
As Lin Yi landed, he exhaled slowly, trying not to show anything.
Up close, he leaned toward Scarlett and lowered his voice.
"Appreciate the help."
She smiled. "I feel like I just assisted history."
Lin Yi gave a small nod. "Told you."
As she walked off, he shook his head to himself.
"That… almost went very wrong," he muttered under his breath.
With two straight perfect scores, Lin Yi was already through to the final.
In the stands, David Stern rubbed his temple, clearly not thrilled.
"This format…" he said quietly.
A staff member beside him hesitated. "We can review it after—"
"We're reviewing it tomorrow," Stern cut in. "This isn't working."
He paused, then added, almost to himself, "Some ideas sound better than they play out."
In the final, Jeremy Evans stepped in first.
He took a breath, reset, tried to slow everything down.
His first attempt didn't fall, and the clock ran out.
He looked up at the scoreboard, then gave a small, resigned smile.
"Yeah… that tracks."
When Lin Yi's turn came, he kept it simple.
Baseline drive, smooth lift, reverse finish with a clean switch behind his back.
Another perfect score.
Evans clapped as he walked past him. "Alright, man. That's yours."
Lin Yi nodded. "Still got one more."
Evans shrugged. "I'll give you something to close it out."
On his final attempt, Evans let go of the pressure and just went for it.
Reverse, between-the-legs, into a windmill.
This time, the crowd gave him real applause.
As he landed, he looked around, almost surprised.
"I'll take that," he said, half smiling.
For the last dunk of the night, Lin Yi waved someone else over again.
"Kobe, I need you for this."
Kobe Bryant smiled as he walked out. "About time."
A second rim was rolled onto the court, set higher than standard.
Kobe caught the ball and flipped it off the glass.
Lin Yi rose, met it clean, and hammered it down with a full extension.
His arm disappeared into the rim.
For a split second, there was silence.
Then the arena exploded again.
Kobe just shook his head as he walked away. "Yeah… that's ridiculous."
Back on commentary, Barkley leaned into the mic. "I don't want to hear any more debates. That's it."
The scores came in, unanimous.
No hesitation this time.
Lin Yi had it.
Every single vote.
. . .
Lin Yi had barely stepped off the floor before a microphone was already in front of him.
Craig Sager grinned, colorful suit as loud as the arena behind him.
"Lin, congratulations. How does this one feel?"
Lin Yi let out a breath, still catching it, a small smile settling in.
"It feels good," he said. "Really good. I'm grateful for the chance to be out here again, and to win it… that means a lot. More than anything, I'm just glad the fans enjoyed it."
The crowd responded immediately, another wave of cheers rolling through the building.
Sager nodded, leaning in slightly. "You've set the bar pretty high now. Be honest, are we going to see you back in this contest again?"
Lin Yi chuckled under his breath.
"Maybe," he said. "If everything lines up right, I'll think about it. No promises, though."
That answer drew a mix of laughter and playful boos.
Sager raised an eyebrow. "Before I let you go, anyone you want to thank?"
Lin Yi didn't hesitate this time.
"Yeah," he said, glancing toward the nearest camera. "I want to give a shoutout to my girl, Liz. She's been holding things down for me, especially when I've been busy with the season and all of this. She never complains, just supports me. I appreciate that more than anything."
The reaction was instant. Cheers, whistles, a few players on the sideline clapping and nodding.
Sager smiled wider. "Funny you mention her," he said. "Because we've got something to show you."
He turned to the Jumbotron. A photo popped up, Elizabeth on her couch, smiling at the TV showing the Dunk competition, hand raised. On her finger, clear as day, was a diamond ring.
The camera cut back to Lin Yi.
Sager tilted his head. "That's new. You want to tell us about it?"
Lin Yi scratched the back of his neck, a little less composed now, but still smiling.
"I'm not the best at this kind of stuff," he admitted. "But my mom always told me, if you find someone you want to spend your life with, don't wait around. Make it clear."
He paused for a second, then nodded.
"So I did."
The arena noise swelled again.
"The time I've spent with her since my rookie year… that's been some of the best time in my life," he said, his voice steady. "And I plan to keep it that way for as long as I can."
He lifted his eyes to the camera.
"I couldn't be there for her birthday today, so I wanted to do something before I left. Make it count."
A brief pause, then a softer smile.
"So it was just the two of us, out on the beach at home. I asked her to marry me."
He exhaled, almost laughing under his breath.
"And that smile she gave me… that was worth more than the ring."
Another beat.
"Elizabeth, I love you."
That one hit.
Players on the bench stood up, clapping. The crowd roared, louder than before, feeding off the moment.
Sager gave him a quick pat on the arm.
"Man of the hour, on and off the court," he said. "Congratulations again on your win, and wishing you the best in your relationship."
"Always a pleasure, Craig."
Lin Yi nodded, shook his hand, and stepped away as the noise followed him.
Sager turned back to the camera, smiling.
"And there you have it. Your Slam Dunk Champion, putting on a show in every way tonight."
. . .
Later that night, two clips were played everywhere.
Lin's final dunk and his post interview.
People replayed the final dunk, frame by frame."The time I've spent with her since my rookie year… that's been some of the best time in my life," he said, his voice steady. "And I plan to keep it that way for as long as I can."
He lifted his eyes to the camera.
"I couldn't be there for her birthday today, so I wanted to do something before I left. Make it count."
A brief pause, then a softer smile.

He exhaled, almost laughing under his breath.
"And that smile she gave me… that was worth more than the ring."

. . .
By the time the dunk contest ended, it wasn't just Houston that had lost control.
The internet had already caught fire.
The reactions came first, fast and unfiltered.

NBA Hardwood Talk (Fan Page)
Lin Yi just had one of the greatest All-Star nights I've ever seen. Dominated the dunk contest, then turned around and showed love to his fiancée on live TV. That balance, as an athlete with the glitz and glam, is very rare.
