Chapter 104 – The Space Between Her Shoulder and the World

POV: Jaeheon Kang

It happened in April.

A chill still lingered in the Italian air, curling into the stone of her villa, brushing through windowpanes like forgotten ghosts. He'd been watching her from across the kitchen island — watching, because that's what he always did.

She was pouring over satellite schematics, silent as always. But her shoulders… they were tense. Set high. Drawn.

Jaeheon didn't speak.

He just walked to her.

And, without asking, without a word, he reached out—slowly—and placed his hand on her shoulder.

Not to comfort.

Not to protect.

Just to exist.

To say I'm here in the one way she might allow.

She didn't pull away.

She didn't look at him either.

But her fingers paused on the keyboard. Just long enough for him to know that she felt it.

That was the first time he touched her without permission.

She let it stay.

After that, there were moments.

Small ones.

When he would pour her tea and her hand would brush his.

When she would lean back after a long day and her head would rest against his arm.

When he passed behind her in the hallway and her fingers caught his wrist—just for balance.

And sometimes—

On nights when the world was too loud and her thoughts were heavier than silence—

She let him sit beside her on the couch.

Close.

Closer than anyone had ever been.

Her head tilted against his shoulder.

His eyes closed.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them had to.

It was not affection. Not quite.

Not yet.

But it was something sacred.

Like being trusted with the space between her shoulder and the world.

One night, around the beginning of May, she looked up at him and said,

"You're still here."

He smiled, just barely.

"I didn't know I was allowed to leave."

She stared at him for a moment too long.

Then whispered,

"You're not."

Then, without another word, she kissed his cheek.

Light. Barely there.

But it landed like thunder in his chest.

She returned to her work like nothing happened.

And he stood there, hand grazing the spot where her lips had been, wondering if this was what it meant—

To be wanted.

Quietly.

Unapologetically.

Without anyone else in the world knowing.

And maybe, for now, that was enough.

Because this—whatever this was—

Was real.

Even if only here.

Even if only for her.
