Zor-El straightened slightly, shifting into his professional demeanor. Unlike his brother who was a pure scientist, Zor-El had always been more practically minded, focused on logistics and resource management rather than theoretical research.
"The mining operations are proceeding efficiently, Your Majesty," Zor-El reported. "We have established automated mining stations on seventeen of the largest asteroids in the belt, with manned oversight facilities on five of those sites."
"We have successfully located and extracted most of the common metals we need to replenish our reserves," he continued. "Iron, nickel, platinum, titanium - all the standard construction materials are abundant in the belt. We have also found significant deposits of rare earth elements that are essential for advanced electronics and energy systems."
Zor-El pulled up a data pad and consulted it briefly. "Current projections indicate that once we complete mining operations on the primary targets of this asteroid field, we will have approximately twice the raw material reserves we brought with us from Krypton. That represents a substantial increase in our resource base and will support expansion efforts in this star system."
"Excellent news," Kon-Rao said. "That will give us the foundation needed for building additional ships, expanding our habitation facilities on Mars, and developing our industrial infrastructure."
"However," Zor-El continued, his expression becoming more serious, "there is one significant problem. We have not been able to locate any deposits of Kridinite in the asteroid belt, nor have we found any materials with similar properties that could serve as a substitute."
The mention of Kridinite caused Kon-Rao's expression to become more thoughtful. Kridinite was a unique crystalline material that had been essential to many advanced Kryptonian technologies.
It had unusual properties related to energy storage and transmission, making it invaluable for power systems, weapons, and certain types of sensors.
Losing access to Kridinite was a significant concern.
Many of their most advanced systems relied on it, and their existing reserves were finite.
Eventually, they would run out, and when that happened, they would need to either find an alternative material or redesign their technology to function without it, and the redesigning would take significant time, and more so when implementing it with the technology that was already in commission.
"I see," Kon-Rao said, his mind already working on potential solutions. "Kridinite was unique to Krypton's geology, formed under the specific conditions of our red sun and the unusual mineral composition of our home system."
He thought about the various rare materials that existed on Earth, according to Alex's memories. Vibranium was the most obvious parallel - a material capable of absorbing and manipulating energy.
"Continue with your mining operations as planned," Kon-Rao instructed. "Extract everything useful from the asteroid belt. As for Kridinite or a suitable replacement, I will work on acquiring alternatives. There are materials on Earth that might serve our purposes, though obtaining them will require some planning."
Zor-El nodded in acceptance. "Understood, Your Majesty. We will focus on maximizing the extraction of available resources while you pursue alternatives for the more exotic materials."
Kon-Rao paused, then asked a question that was more personal than strategic. "How are our Toruks doing?"
The mention brought immediate smiles to both brothers' faces, a rare display of warmth from men who normally maintained professional composure in the Emperor's presence.
"They are doing wonderfully, Your Majesty," Zor-El replied, his voice carrying obvious affection. "Both hatchlings are healthy and growing quickly. They are being taken care of by Kara; she has formed quite a bond with them."
Toruks were a species of dragons native to Krypton. They were an apex species even among Krypton's diverse dragon populations, sitting at the very top of the wildlife food chain.
Only Kryptonians themselves were superior to Toruks in terms of danger, and even then, only because Kryptonians had intelligence and technology on their side.
In pure physical terms, an adult Toruk was a terrifying creature. They could grow to the size of small buildings, with skin harder than most metals and the ability to breathe flames hot enough to melt sunstone.
Their intelligence was surprising for creatures classified as animals - they could understand complex commands, form lasting bonds with handlers, and even demonstrate something approaching problem-solving ability.
House Rao used Toruks as mounts, a tradition that dated back to the early days of the empire when Rao himself had supposedly ridden the first Toruk.
The creatures were symbols of House Rao's power and prestige, recognized throughout Kryptonian society as the personal beasts of the imperial family.
Kon-Rao had brought two Toruk hatchlings with him when he departed from Krypton. They were among the very few living animals he had actually transported rather than simply collecting DNA samples from.
The decision to bring them had been partially practical - Toruks could serve as powerful assets in combat or exploration - and partially sentimental - they were a living connection to Krypton's past.
The hatchlings were currently under the care of Zor-El's daughter, Kara Zor-El. She was the same age as Kon, and she had shown a remarkable aptitude for working with the creatures.
The Toruks had hatched in front of Kon and left their marks on him. They belonged to Kon and Kon alone.
However, they bonded with Kara almost immediately when he appointed her as their caretaker.
Since then, they had been following her commands and seeking her attention with the devotion of pets rather than the wild independence typical of their species. That alone showed her talent as a Beastmaster.
"Kara reports that they have grown noticeably since we arrived in this system," Zor-El continued.
"She estimates they have increased their mass by approximately thirty percent in the past month. Their appetites are substantial, but we have enough food supplies to sustain them without difficulty."
"She has been training them daily," he added. "Basic commands, flight control, getting them accustomed to being mounted. She says they are incredibly intelligent and learn quickly. Within a few months, they should be ready for actual combat training if we decide to use them that way."
Kon-Rao found himself wondering about something he had not previously considered.
The Toruks were Kryptonian creatures, evolved under the red sun of Krypton. Their biology was presumably similar to Kryptonians in fundamental ways, adapted to the same stellar environment.
Which raised an interesting question: would the Toruks also gain abilities when exposed to yellow sun radiation?
If Kryptonians could develop incredible powers under a yellow sun, could the same apply to other lifeforms from Krypton? Would the Toruks become even more formidable than they already were? Could they develop new abilities or simply amplified versions of their existing traits?
The implications were fascinating but also somewhat concerning. Toruks were already dangerous creatures that required experienced handlers and strict training protocols. If they suddenly gained superkryptonian- or perhaps super-draconic - abilities, they could become nearly impossible to control.
But that was a consideration for later. For now, the Toruks were still hatchlings, young enough to be managed safely regardless of any potential power increases.
By the time they were fully grown and ready for yellow sun exposure, Kon-Rao would have developed protocols for handling empowered Kryptonian creatures.
"Maintain the current care protocols," Kon-Rao instructed. "And inform Kara that I am pleased with her work. When the Toruks are ready for more advanced training, we will evaluate whether to expose them to yellow sun radiation and study the effects."
"I will relay your message, Your Majesty," Zor-El said with obvious pride in his daughter's accomplishments.
Kon-Rao straightened in his chair, signaling that the briefing was concluding. "You both have your assignments. Jor-El, continue the Mars project and begin research into the portal system. Zor-El, continue mining operations and keep me informed of any unusual discoveries in the asteroid belt. Are there any other concerns that require my immediate attention?"
Both brothers shook their heads. "No, Your Majesty," they said in unison.
"Then you are dismissed. Keep me updated on your progress."
Jor-El and Zor-El both placed their fists over their hearts again in salute, then turned and left the cabin with the same military aura they had displayed when entering. The door closed behind them, leaving Kon-Rao alone with his thoughts once more.
He sat in silence for a moment, reviewing the information he had just received. The empire was taking shape slowly but steadily. Mars would soon be habitable, providing a true home base for the Kryptonian people.
Resources were being gathered from the asteroid belt, building the industrial foundation needed for expansion. Key technologies were being developed or improved to enhance their capabilities for the future.
The Kryptonians were now on a trajectory of growth, and soon they would rise to power.
For now, however, there remained another problem that needed to be resolved if Krypton was to rise smoothly—and that was the dwindling number of Kryptonians.
But, Kon already had a solution for that, one he had brought with him from Krypton.
"LYRA," Kon-Rao called out.
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
"Summon Lara Lor-Van."
