"Brother Hao, what do you think that corp dog is doing, coming here to dine with his secretary?"
David asked, trying to draw conclusions from their earlier conversation—even if his experience was limited, he could more or less guess their relationship.
"Take a guess."
"I got nothin'."
"Don't be such a wuss. You've been training for weeks now. Don't tell me you can't even speak your mind!"
"Uh… maybe he's trying to hit on her?"
"Heh, not bad. You're halfway there. For a man, eating with a woman usually only means one thing. But in my judgment, you've only got part of it right."
Huh?
David perked up just from hearing the first half, but completely missed the second part—because it reminded him of something.
His mom… wasn't she having dinner with Lin Mo right now?
Could it be…?
No, no way. That was absurd.
David had confidence in Lin Mo's character.
Clearly, this Japanese dude couldn't be taken at face value!
Seeing David fall silent, Kitagawa Hiroshi carried on.
"David, you have to understand—Night City is a place drowning in desires. Unless you're some bald monk, the ones who seem the most uptight and emotionless are often the most dangerous."
"Because you never know what it is they truly crave. If you look closely, you'll notice that guy barely looked at the woman beside him. Even though she was dressed to kill tonight..."
"Maybe he just doesn't like women?" David asked, puzzled.
"A beast that can restrain its urges is often the most patient. All that surface-level temptation might not even register to him. What he's after—that's worth waiting for. Mark my words, that guy's definitely going to invite her back to his place tonight."
David stayed silent.
And sure enough, Kitagawa's prediction came true. Once the meal was done, the man named Goodwin invited his blonde companion to visit his home.
The woman, blushing faintly, nodded in agreement.
Goodwin rose from his seat like a refined nobleman, paid the bill, and walked out with the blonde woman in tow.
"Time to get to work."
After a short pause, Kitagawa finally stood, straightened his appearance like he'd just finished dinner, led David to the register, and paid.
He also picked up the food they had packed earlier.
"Target has exited the restaurant and is headed toward the parking lot. I've already moved your vehicle to the roadside. Once you're in the car, look for the silver-white Jefferson—plate number is... You should be able to sync up with their timing while he's retrieving the car."
Sasha's voice rang through their comms—gentle yet steady.
That voice… it was like having an entire support team behind them, even if it was just one kind big sister-type running remote overwatch. Still, David couldn't help but feel reassured.
As they descended in the elevator, he looked toward Kitagawa and asked quietly:
"Brother Hao, who is Sasha anyway? When did she join our team?"
As far as David knew, the studio was still in its early stages—far from fully staffed. Otherwise, Lin Mo wouldn't have dragged in someone like him just to pad the numbers.
Yes, David viewed himself as a space filler.
No matter how much Lin Mo or Kitagawa praised his talent, it didn't change the current reality.
"She? She just joined recently—less than a week ago, I think. We haven't even met in person. All our contact's been through comms," Kitagawa replied.
"Wait, that recent?" David blinked.
"Yeah. This is our first time working together. Lin-kun gave me some intel on her, but honestly? I've never met her. Don't know much."
He added calmly, "But if Lin-kun trusts her, that's all I need. The boss doesn't make mistakes."
David gave Kitagawa a look—this was a man who mentioned "Lin-kun" in practically every breath. He sighed inwardly and didn't press further.
Luckily, since their conversation had been spoken aloud rather than transmitted through comms, there was no risk Sasha overheard any of it.
When the elevator reached the ground floor, the two stepped out briskly.
David quickly spotted the blue-and-white Mizutani Shion MZ2 sports car parked at the curb—it was the same ride they'd taken here.
After working with Kitagawa for a while, David was familiar with the guy's vehicle habits.
Besides this common Night City sports car, he knew Kitagawa had a classic hovercar and a heavily modified Emperor 720 armored vehicle stored in a rented garage.
Before they'd left for this mission, David had actually wondered why they didn't take the Emperor 720.
If Night City were an ocean, then the Mizutani was a sleek little tuna—while the Emperor 720 was a megashark. It ruled the roads.
Now, though, David understood.
This was a covert surveillance mission. They had to stay low-profile.
Rolling in with a modded Emperor 720 would be like tailing someone with a golden parade float—only an idiot wouldn't notice.
Once they were inside the car, Kitagawa leaned into the driver's seat, resting one hand on the wheel, eyes like a hawk scanning the street.
He soon spotted a silver-white Jefferson vehicle slowly exiting the parking lot and merging into traffic.
Kitagawa instinctively reached for the gearshift, ready to unleash the full horsepower—but stopped himself.
Now wasn't the time for speed trials.
"Shame, kid. Would've been a perfect chance to show off my legendary driving skills. Maybe next time."
Regretfully, he started the car and followed the Jefferson at a normal pace, slipping into traffic like a hunter camouflaging among the brush—tailing his prey without being seen, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Streetlights blurred past as they followed the car across town. Eventually, the Jefferson pulled into an apartment complex near the corporate plaza.
Kitagawa watched silently as the silver vehicle descended into the building's underground garage. He thought for a moment, then parked their own car in a nearby open lot.
"We're not following them into the garage?" David asked as they got out.
Kitagawa shook his head, lighting a cigarette.
He exhaled slowly, eyes narrowing as he stared through the smoke at the apartment building.
"That complex is specifically for corporate employees. We don't have ID clearance. We don't know the layout either. Driving in there uninvited? Not worth it."
"So what now? If we don't go in, how are we supposed to figure out which unit he lives in?" David asked.
