Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 - Running

Unknown Bar, Earth-2033

Inside a dimly lit bar, two individuals, one shorter than the other, cautiously approach a person sitting at the end of the bar.

"Are you Jeremiah?" one of the individuals asks the person sitting at the bar.

"That depends on who's asking," Jeremiah replies while taking a sip of something in a glass.

A more feminine voice speaks this time, telling him, "We can't answer that question just yet, but just know we've been looking for you for a long time."

"That's assuming that I am indeed the person you're looking for. What evidence do you have to back up your claim?" He finishes the rest of his drink and gently places the glass on the counter. "If you don't have any, you can kindly fuck off!"

The first individual places his hand on Jeremiah's shoulder and tells him, "Please don't make this difficult. If you come with us, we can explain everything to you."

After he finishes saying that, a jolt of static shoots through his hand, making him release his grip on Jeremiah.

"That was very uncalled for." The man's eyes begin to glow green as he looks at Jeremiah.

"You did it to yourself when you touched me." Jeremiah stands up and throws a few bills on the counter. "Now, please excuse me. I've got other places to be."

Jeremiah pushes the man aside and begins to run. He hops over a table, knocking over a few drinks as he continues toward the door.

"What are you waiting for? After him!" the woman says as she starts running after him.

"Bella, wait. Don't run off on your own." The man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a radio. "Jacobsen. The target is on the move. Bella and I are in pursuit, but we may need assistance."

A gruff voice comes through the radio and states one word: "Understood."

The man begins to chase after Bella and Jeremiah. All three of them make it outside the bar and into the sunlight of a bustling city.

Jeremiah, leading the chase, weaves in and out of the foot traffic with Bella close behind him. He makes a left turn into an alleyway filled with trash and small rodents. In front of him, he sees a tall building blocking his path.

Behind him, both Bella and Edward appear, blocking his way back out.

"Stop running and give up. You have no way out of here," Bella says to Jeremiah.

Without turning around to speak to them, Jeremiah says, "Who says I have no way out?"

Jeremiah places his hand on the brick wall and, with an unknown force, suctions his hand to it. Bella and Edward watch in disbelief as Jeremiah rapidly scales the wall using only his hands and feet.

Bella quickly snaps out of her disbelief and points at Jeremiah. "Edward, do something about him! We can't let him escape."

"Don't worry. I already called for backup. He's not going to be able to get far," Edward says as Jeremiah reaches the top of the building and climbs over the edge.

Jeremiah, now on the roof of the building, continues to run from his pursuers. He hops from roof to roof, avoiding anything that might slow him down.

After running for about ten minutes, he comes to a stop on top of a local donut shop. He rests his hands on his knees while simultaneously looking around to see if anyone is still following him.

He sits atop an air-conditioning unit and continues to look around. "Damn. I should have known better. Never again am I staying in one place for more than a month."

Jeremiah stands up and walks over to the edge of the building. "Alright. Time to get moving."

He jumps off the building into the alleyway below. Using his hands and feet, he creates friction against the wall to slow his descent. Jeremiah looks down to see where he's going to land. To his unfortunate surprise, a garbage bin sits directly below him.

"Fuck," is all Jeremiah can say before he lands in it.

He slowly rises from the garbage, pinching his nose. He climbs out of it and onto solid ground. "Damn. I should've looked before I jumped."

He dusts off any trash he may have collected and continues on his way. A few minutes later, a figure appears in the same alleyway.

"I lost his trail. There are too many different scents here to track him properly. Not only that, but it stinks," the unidentified man says into his radio.

"How did you manage to lose him? I thought you were better than this," Edward yells back over the radio.

"Don't worry. I'll find him. He must be in the area," the man says into the radio.

"You better. This is the second time he's managed to get away. Oh, and I will be informing the Mistress," Edward tells the man over the radio.
