Chapter 454 - Chapter 454: Floaroma Town

Chapter 454: Floaroma Town

~Third POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Next Day, Floaroma Town]

The air in Floaroma Town hummed with a symphony of life and scent. Azure moved with the easy confidence of someone who had seen and conquered much, his eyes constantly scanning, assessing, observing.

Perched on his shoulder, Pikachu's ears twitched, absorbing the myriad sounds of the blooming town. Eevee, nestled atop Azure's head like an elegant crown, let out soft, contented trills, her fluffy tail occasionally brushing his cheek. Hidden within the warm confines of his jacket, a small, vibrant Pichu (Mew) stirred, its tiny tail swishing.

Behind him, Platinum Berlitz glided with the grace of a seasoned noble. She radiated an air of dignified curiosity, her gaze sweeping over the endless fields of wildflowers that gave Floaroma its name.

The town was a riot of color—crimson petals, sapphire blooms, emerald leaves, all swaying gently in the crisp Sinnoh breeze. The scent of sweet nectar and rich earth was almost intoxicating.

Platinum mused, her voice a calm counterpoint to the town's gentle hum, "The flora here is quite remarkable. The biodiversity, from a botanical perspective, is truly astounding. Perhaps an analysis of the local pollen count would be insightful."

Without waiting for a reply, she began to walk ahead, her pace picking up as she headed toward the town square, drawn by the promise of further observation. Azure simply nodded, a silent acknowledgment.

He knew Platinum preferred to absorb her surroundings firsthand, processing information with an academic rigor that was both her Berlitz birthright and personal passion. She was a scholar on a journey, and he was her shadow, ensuring her safety without impeding her quest for knowledge.

Diamond exclaimed, his voice hearty as he took a deep breath, his hands clasped behind his head, "Whoa, look at all these flowers, Pearl!"

His partner, Lax, a portly Munchlax, mimicked him with an even deeper, more enthusiastic sniff. Pearl retorted, nudging Diamond playfully, "They're not just for looking at, silly! They're for enjoying! Sinnoh is amazing, isn't it? Bet you haven't seen anything like this before, Azure!"

Azure merely chuckled softly, his gaze momentarily lingering on Platinum's retreating figure before it snapped back to his two rather boisterous companions. Suddenly, Lax's nose twitched, an exaggerated sniff sound that pulled his eyes wide.

*Sniff*

*Sniff*

His small, black eyes, usually half-lidded with contentment, were now sharp with focus. With a guttural grumble, he lurched forward, an almost primal instinct guiding him.

Diamond asked, clearly accustomed to his Pokémon's eccentricities, "Hey, Lax, what's up buddy?"

But before he could get an answer, Lax was off, a surprisingly agile blur of fur. Diamond yelled, chasing after him, "Whoa, hold on, Lax!"

Pearl, ever the one to follow the action, was right behind. Azure watched them go, a familiar sense of amusement and slight exasperation washing over him.

His Pikachu squeaked, a high-pitched cry questioning the sudden sprint, "Pi? Pika? (Were going to follow them, aren't we?)."

Eevee tilted her head with a nod. Azure sighed, a soft sound as he said, "Come on, you two. Best to keep an eye on them."

His steps were smooth, unhurried, yet he easily kept pace with the two trainers, albeit at a slight distance. He knew Diamond and Lax's noses were rarely wrong when it came to food, and that usually meant trouble.

He found them a short distance away, off the main path, in a small, verdant clearing. There, a thick, ancient tree stood, its bark gnarled and dark.

But it wasn't the tree that captivated Diamond and Lax. It was the thick, golden ooze dripping from its trunk.

*Sniff*

*Sniff*

Lax pressed his face against the bark, his tongue already reaching out. Diamond, meanwhile, had come to a skidding halt, his eyes wide as he processed the scene. Before Azure could even open his mouth to offer a warning, Diamond, in his enthusiastic pursuit of Lax, miscalculated.

*CRACK*

A loud, splintering sound echoed through the clearing as Diamond, unable to stop his momentum, collided with the tree trunk. The impact rattled the ancient wood, and with a groan, a thick, lower branch, already weakened, sagged and then snapped off entirely, crashing to the ground with a dull THUD.

*THUD*

Diamond mumbled, rubbing the back of his head, more embarrassed than hurt, "Oops, my bad there…"

Lax, unfazed, continued to slurp the honey directly from the tree, his tail wagging. It cried out happily, "Munch! Munchlax! (Oh, sweet lord almighty… it's honey!!)."

*Slurp*

*Slurp*

*Slurp*

Azure stated, his voice calm but firm as he stepped into the clearing, "Diamond, that's private property."

His gaze swept over the broken branch, then to the oozing honey as he added, "And I have a feeling that honey wasn't put there for you to taste."

Just as he finished his sentence, a small voice, trembling with distress, pierced the air, "My… my tree!"

A young girl, perhaps no older than eight, stumbled out from behind a bush, her eyes wide and glistening with tears. She wore a simple dress and clutched a small watering can. Her gaze fell upon the fallen branch, then to Diamond and Lax, who were still greedily enjoying the sticky treat.

Fresh tears streamed down her cheeks, turning them rosy. She cried, her voice cracking, "You… you broke my tree! And you're eating all the honey! I spent so long spreading it, for… for the Combee!"

Diamond, now fully aware of the damage and his blunder, recoiled as if stung. He tugged at his Munchlax, who reluctantly pulled away from the tree, a sticky trail gleaming on his snout as he tried to apologize, "Oh, no! I-I'm so sorry! Lax, stop that!"

Azure asked gently, crouching down slightly to be more at eye level with the distraught girl, "You spread honey for Combee? That was very kind of you."

*BUZZZZZZ*

Before the girl could respond, a low, collective buzz filled the air. The sound grew rapidly, escalating into an angry, furious hum.

*HUMMM*

From the flower fields nearby, and even from within the broken branch, a swarm of wild Combee rose, their tiny wings beating furiously. They had clearly taken offense to the intruders, especially those who had damaged their honey-laden tree.

Pearl gulped as the first few Combee dive-bombed Diamond and Lax, "Uh oh…"

*ZING*

*ZING*

*ZING*

Diamond yelped, swatting wildly, "OW! HEY!"

Lax let out a pathetic cry and tried to hide behind Diamond, "Munch! (Ow!!)"

*ZING*

*ZING*

Pearl, too, was caught in the onslaught. He hopped on one foot, his face contorting in discomfort, "Aargh! They're stinging! They're really stinging!"

*Wooosh*

Azure, with a quick, practiced movement, shielded Pikachu and Eevee with his arm, the two partners retreating into the safety of his jacket. The Pichu (Mew) inside made a soft, startled sound, perhaps a mixture of curiosity and amusement.

Azure himself was quick enough to dodge most of the stings, his years of experience navigating wild Pokémon encounters serving him well. Pearl cried, remembering Platinum, "This is bad, this is bad! If Platinum sees us like this, she'll never let us live it down! She'll think we're completely uncivilized!"

He winced as another Combee found its mark as he commanded Chatler, "Chatler! Go! Find Platinum! Tell her to meet us at the Pick a Peck of Colors Flower Shop! And tell her it's urgent, but don't tell her why!"

Chatler, Pearl's Chatot, who had been perched on his shoulder, squawked, "Chat! Chat! Squawk!"

Then it took off, a blue blur against the clear sky, flapping furiously towards the town, hopefully delivering the message before Platinum stumbled upon their embarrassing predicament. The Combee, having defended their precious tree and delivered their stinging justice, slowly began to disperse, returning to their posts.

Diamond and Pearl were left with red welts blooming on their arms and faces, looking thoroughly miserable. Diamond reiterated, his voice small, addressing the still-sobbing girl, "I'm so, so sorry."

He looked at the broken branch, then at the remnants of the honey as he added, "We really messed up."

Pearl, ever the one to try to lighten the mood, albeit clumsily, nudged Diamond, "Yeah, but hey, at least we know what a real Poké Ball feels like, right?"

He attempted a laugh, which turned into a wince. Diamond, catching on, forced a grin as he fired back, "Yeah! Like a dozen little Poké Balls, all hitting you at once! Talk about an immersion experience!"

The girl, despite her tears, let out a small, wet giggle. The unexpected joke had briefly broken through her sorrow.

But her smile quickly faded. She said, her lower lip trembling again, "It's not funny. My papa is going to be so sad. He was supposed to meet me here, by my tree. He's always so busy at Valley Windworks, but he promised to come today."

Just as the words left her mouth, a faint, ethereal presence drifted into view above the distant trees. It was a Drifloon, its small body bobbing gently in the air, its two arm-like appendages swaying listlessly.

It looked utterly exhausted, its purple skin dull, and it struggled to maintain its altitude. Clutched precariously in one of its tiny hands was a tattered, scorched lab coat, its fabric singed and torn in several places.

The girl gasped, her eyes widening in renewed terror, "Papa's Drifloon! No! Drifloon, what happened? Why is Papa's coat…?"

Her voice trailed off, fear gripping her as she uttered, "He's at Valley Windworks. Something's wrong!"

Azure's gaze sharpened, his relaxed demeanor instantly replaced by a focused intensity. A tattered lab coat, an exhausted Pokémon, and a worried child whose father was at a power plant… the pieces clicked into place.

This was a potential emergency. Azure said, his voice low and steady, a tone that commanded attention without being loud, "Alright… We need to go to Valley Windworks. Now."

Azure turned, ready to lead them, a familiar voice cut through the air, calm and composed as she asked, "Azure, are you quite alright? Chatler gave me a most peculiar message."

Platinum Berlitz stood at the edge of the clearing, her expression serene, though a slight frown marred her forehead as she surveyed the scene before her. Her eyes took in the tearful girl, the red welts on Diamond and Pearl's faces, the broken tree branch, and the disheveled Drifloon.

She hadn't seen the Combee attack, but the aftermath spoke volumes. Pearl, flustered, quickly explained as he spoke in a rush, a single, breathless sentence, "Platinum! We were just… well, Diamond crashed into the tree, and the girl was sad, and then the Combee stung us, and now her papa's Drifloon came with his ruined coat, and he's at Valley Windworks, and she thinks something's wrong!"

Platinum listened, her gaze shifting between the injured Drifloon, the crying girl, and her two new, rather unpolished companions. A subtle flicker crossed her eyes—a spark of appreciation, perhaps.

She had expected them to be merely boisterous and uncouth. Yet, here they were, despite their blunders, showing genuine concern for a stranger.

She observed how Diamond's expression was riddled with guilt, and how Pearl, despite his own discomfort, was genuinely worried about the girl's father. Platinum thought, a quiet admiration blooming in her chest, 'To act with such selfless intention, to set aside one's own discomfort for the plight of another, even someone encountered by pure chance… It is a quality perhaps more valuable than polished manners.'

She said nothing aloud, but her silent approval was a potent endorsement. Platinum declared, her voice firm, her earlier intention of exploring Floaroma Town completely forgotten, "Then we should proceed to Valley Windworks at once. The well-being of a citizen is paramount. Azure, lead the way."

Azure nodded, his expression unreadable, but a faint warmth settled in his chest. Platinum's quick decision, her innate sense of responsibility, was precisely what he expected from a Berlitz. "Understood. Everyone, stick close."

The group set off, the girl, whose name they still didn't know, clutching Azure's jacket sleeve, her small hand surprisingly tight. The Drifloon, its tattered lab coat still in tow, floated weakly alongside them.

[Sinnoh Region, Valley Windworks]

As they drew closer to Valley Windworks, the cheerful sounds of Floaroma Town slowly faded, replaced by an increasingly strong, relentless wind…

*WHOOSH*

The gusts whipped around them, tugging at their clothes, rustling the sparse vegetation, and kicking up dust from the path. It was an unnatural wind, too powerful, too consistent, even for Sinnoh.

Platinum commented, her voice slightly strained against the wind's roar, her scientific mind already analyzing the anomaly, "This is… unusually strong."

The little girl shivered, tightening her grip on Azure's jacket as she added, "It's always like this near the Windworks, but… it feels stronger today. It's scary."

As they approached the main building, Platinum, who had been riding her Ponyta with the girl behind her, noticed the tension in Azure's shoulders. She couldn't help but ask, "Azure? You seem… focused."

Azure replied, his hand resting on the Poké Ball of his Ursaluna, "I've been through this kind of trouble before, my lady. When the wind screams like this, it's usually because someone is forcing it to."

Valley Windworks loomed ahead, a stark, imposing structure of metal and concrete, its massive turbines spinning furiously, converting the relentless gusts into electrical energy. The building itself looked almost besieged by the wind, the air around it a swirling vortex. The gates were tightly shut, a heavy, metallic chain securing them.

Pearl shouted over the wind, his voice barely audible, "It's locked!"

He tried the handle, but it wouldn't budge. He yelled out loud, "What kind of security is this? Who would lock a power plant?"

Azure squinted at the lock. It was a sturdy, industrial-grade padlock, designed to withstand brute force. He explained, "Standard procedure for a secure facility. But given the situation, we can't wait for someone to open it."

He glanced at Pearl as he asked, "Any ideas, Pearl?"

Pearl grinned, his earlier embarrassment forgotten as he replied, "You got it! If a lock's in the way, my Pokémon can burn it down! Chimlar, come on out!"

*Pop*

From its Poké Ball, Chimlar, Pearl's excitable Chimchar, appeared, ready for action. Flames already flickered at the tip of its tail.

Pearl commanded, pointing at the padlock, "Alright, Chimlar! Use Ember on that lock! Burn it good!"

*Sssss*

Chimlar let out an enthusiastic Chim-char! and unleashed a focused stream of orange-red embers. The flames licked at the metallic padlock, which immediately began to glow cherry-red, then hissed and bubbled as the intense heat melted the metal.

*SNAP*

The scent of burning metal filled the air, acrid and sharp. In a matter of seconds, the thick chain snapped, the molten remnants dripping onto the ground with a soft sizzle.

The heavy metal doors, no longer secured, creaked ominously in the wind, slowly swinging inward with a low, grating groan. A gaping, dark maw was revealed, leading into the heart of the Windworks…
