Maylene had a faint frown on her face. She then looked at Scyther as she praised them, "You truly live up to your reputation. Your Scyther is incredibly resilient. But let's see how it fares against pure, unadulterated speed!"
With a confident toss of a new Poké Ball, Maylene declared, "Sneasler, engage!"

A blur of purple fur and sharp claws materialized on the field. Maylene's Sneasler was a formidable sight, its lithe, muscular form radiating a primal ferocity. Its amber eyes glinted with predatory intelligence, and a shimmering, spherical [Normal Gem] pulsed faintly in its paw.
Azure contemplated switching out Scyther. His Pokémon was heavily damaged, pushing its limits. He thought, observing its labored breathing, 'Scyther, can you still go?'
As if reading his mind, Scyther let out a defiant cry, "SCY! (Yes, I can!)."
It shook its head, refusing to retreat, its battered form trembling slightly, but its eyes burning with a fierce, challenging fire. It wanted to continue.
Azure smiled, a flicker of pride in his gaze as he relented responding, "Alright, Scyther. Let's see what this Sneasler can do. Consider this a test of the waters."
He knew little about the capabilities of a Sneasler, especially one trained by a Gym Leader who specializes in fighting types. Maylene, sensing Azure's tactical decision, seized the opportunity and commanded, "Sneasler, Fake Out!"

Sneasler moved with a sudden, astonishing burst of speed. It was a blur of purple, appearing instantly before Scyther, delivering a lightning-fast, disorienting slap!

Scyther flinched, momentarily stunned by the unexpected attack. Its eyes glazed over for a split second, its speed faltering.
The [Normal Gem] in Sneasler's paw shattered into a shower of glittering dust, consumed by the Fake Out. But even as Scyther reeled, a surge of defiant energy rippled through its body. Its hidden ability, Steadfast, activated!

Pearl exclaimed, eyes wide, "Whoa! Did you see that?! Scyther barely flinched!"
Platinum added, amazed, "And its speed just shot up even more! It's so sturdy!"
Azure, however, frowned seeing Maylene's lack of reaction. But then he saw his answer as he viewed the Sneasler.
*Shiii*
He clicked his tongue, a faint sense of unease settling in. He saw Sneasler's body begin to glow with a faint, crimson aura, almost imperceptible to the untrained eye. He realized, a beat too late, 'Unburden!'
He had been outmaneuvered. Azure quickly commanded, hoping to capitalize on Scyther's now incredible speed, "Scyther, Slash! Full power!"
*Zooom*
Scyther lunged, a green, accelerated missile, its scythes poised to strike, leaving a visible trail of emerald light as it rushed towards Sneasler. It was phenomenally fast, faster than before...
But Sneasler… was faster still.
The moment Scyther initiated its attack, Sneasler's crimson aura exploded into a blinding flash. Its body became an absolute blur, not just one, but two blurs, merging and then separating, as if it had teleported.
*ZZZOOOOMMMM*
It vanished from its original spot and, in an instant that defied perception, it was already directly next to Scyther. Its amber eyes held a chilling, almost smug expression, watching Scyther's overshot attack. Before Scyther could even register what had happened, Sneasler's long, sharp claws glowed ominously...
*Woooosh*
With a terrifyingly swift and powerful motion, it executed a devastating Dire Claw!
*WHAM*
The strike connected with unimaginable force, sending Scyther spiraling helplessly through the air!
*CRASH*
Scyther slammed down onto the gym floor, its body battered beyond recovery. Its speed aura flickered and died, and its eyes spiraled. It was out cold as the statue speaker declared, "Scyther is unable to battle! Sneasler wins!"
A stunned silence fell over the gym. Platinum, Pearl, and Diamond blinked, utterly bewildered. Diamond asked, his voice barely a whisper, "What… what just happened? Scyther was so fast!"
Azure let out a sigh, a mix of mild frustration and reluctant admiration. He calmly returned Scyther to its Poké Ball as he explained to the confused audience, "Sneasler's ability, Unburden. When it's held item, the [Normal Gem] was consumed by Fake Out, its speed doubled."
He looked directly at the Dex Holders as he continued, "Sneasler's base speed is 120. When Unburden is activated, its speed effectively becomes 240. Even with Scyther's +3 speed stages, it simply couldn't compete with that raw, monstrous speed."
The crowd's eyes widened in realization, gasping at the sheer magnitude of Sneasler's sudden burst of velocity. Maylene nodded, a triumphant but respectful smile gracing her lips as she boasted proudly, "That's right. A pillar of brilliant, swirling spectral light enveloped Froslass. Her form rippled and changed. The red ribbons lengthened and flowed like frozen mist, becoming more fluid and menacing. Her arm-like appendages sharpened, gaining an almost blade-like quality. Her usually serene, icy blue eyes intensified, glowing with a fierce, cold brilliance. The transformation was swift, powerful, and mesmerizing.
When the light dissipated, Mega Froslass floated revealed, larger, more imposing, and radiating an overwhelming aura of chilling power. Her spectral body shimmered, her icy mask now adorned with sharper, more intricate patterns.

And then, it happened. Immediately, the temperature in the gym plummeted. A soft sound filled the air as tiny, glistening snowflakes began to fall, rapidly intensifying into a swirling vortex of white.
The battlefield, moments ago a pristine arena, was instantly transformed into a miniature blizzard. The floor became slick with a thin layer of frost, and visibility dipped slightly as the Hail pounded down, creating a truly chilling atmosphere.
Pearl gasped, suddenly realizing the effect, "Snow Warning!"
Platinum exclaimed, her eyes wide with surprise, not just at the Hail, but at Azure's unique method of Mega Evolution, "But... he didn't use a Key Stone!"
Diamond, too, stared, utterly fascinated by the Omni Ring. Maylene, too, was momentarily taken aback, not only by the sudden change in weather but by the ring.
Her eyebrows shot up as she muttered, "I've never seen such a thing! So that's how you Mega Evolve!"
She quickly recomposed herself, her competitive spirit reigniting. Sneasler, though visibly affected by the biting cold of the Hail, remained resolute as she ordered, "Sneasler, don't let the weather stop you! Night Slash!"
*WHOOSH-WHOOSH*
Sneasler, still incredibly fast even in the hail, lunged. Its claws elongated, glowing with a dark, sinister energy as it sliced through the falling snow, aiming for Mega Froslass with astonishing speed.
Azure merely smiled as he lightly scolded Maylene, "Ah, but you forget, Maylene. This isn't just any hail."
Unbeknownst to Sneasler, the frost and snow of the hail were infused with Mega Froslass's spectral energy. Its innate ability to manipulate ice and freeze objects had increased substantially. It could use cold air infused with spectral energy to freeze things that were intangible, such as wind or flames.
And in this case, it was subtly but powerfully slowing down even the incredible momentum of Sneasler's charge, thickening the very air around it. Sneasler's movements, while still blurring, lost a fraction of their razor-sharp fluidity, its blazing velocity slightly dampened by the chilling, almost viscous atmosphere.
Night Slash, powered by Sneasler's momentum, was just inches away from Mega Froslass's serene, icy face. The Gym Leader's Pokémon expected a hit, but Mega Froslass simply stared coldly, her glowing eyes unwavering.
*SHIMMER-VANISH*
Then, with a silent Swish! Mega Froslass disappeared...
*SWISH*
The Night Slash sliced through empty air with a resounding sound, leaving Sneasler's claws digging into the now-icy gym floor. Mega Froslass had vanished instantly, melting into the shadows cast by the swirling snowflakes, integrating herself into the spectral veil of the hailstorm.
Maylene cried out, frustration lacing her voice, "What?! Where did it go?!"
Sneasler looked around frantically, its incredible speed now rendered useless against an opponent it couldn't even see. The hail continued to pound, blurring its vision, each snowflake a potential hiding spot.
Azure commanded, his voice reaching through the hail, "Now, Froslass!"

… it vanished again. Sneasler roared in frustration, trying to pivot, to anticipate, but Mega Froslass was too elusive.

It reappeared briefly above, sending a wave of chilling Frost Breath swirling around Sneasler, coating its fur in a thin layer of ice.
*FWOOSH*
The cold bit deep, each hit chipping away at Sneasler's resolve, its movements growing subtly stiffer. The constant barrage of cold and the biting hail was overwhelming it. Maylene tried to counter, "Sneasler, aim for the hail itself! Use Power-Up Punch!"
Sneasler swung wildly, but the punches hit nothing but icy air. Azure knew it was time to end it as he commanded, "Froslass, finish it! Full power Blizzard!"
*ROOOOOAR*
Mega Froslass floated majestically, gathering the surrounding hail, drawing in vast quantities of spectral-ice energy. The snowflakes swirled faster, coalescing into a colossal vortex of freezing wind and razor-sharp ice shards. The gym resonated with a deep, chilling ROOOOAR! as the terrifying ice storm formed.
Sneasler, cornered and significantly slowed by the cumulative effects of the hail and Froslass's constant, chilling attacks, looked up, its amber eyes widening in dread. It had no escape. The colossal Blizzard descended upon it, a tempest of icy death.
*CRUNCH*
The impact was deafening; a massive explosion of ice and wind engulfed Sneasler. It was lifted, thrown, and then slammed violently against the Gym floor, encased momentarily in a fragile shell of ice.
*SHHHH*
When the Blizzard dissipated, leaving only the gentle SHHHH! of the falling hail, Sneasler lay utterly defeated, covered in frost, unable to move. The statue speaker declared, "Sneasler is unable to battle! Mega Froslass wins!"
Mega Froslass floated serenely, its glowing eyes fixed on its vanquished opponent. A faint, chilling chuckle, like the tinkling of ice, seemed to echo through the now icy arena, "Froooo~ (Oh how the mighty have fallen… Fufufu~)"
The hail continued to fall gently around her, a testament to her power. A collective gasp swept through the stands, quickly followed by a roaring ovation. Pearl, Diamond, and Platinum were on their feet, cheering wildly.
Pikachu, Eevee, and Pichu (Mew) were bouncing, celebrating Froslass's masterful performance. Azure allowed himself a satisfied, knowing grin. His strategy had paid off beautifully.
Maylene, though defeated, returned Sneasler with a respectful nod. A slight shiver ran down her spine from the lingering cold of the arena, but her eyes held a profound fighting spirit as she murmured, "Incredible... Truly incredible, that was a magnificent display of power and strategy."
Now, the score stood at 5-4 in Azure's favor, but the momentum was shifting. Maylene's expression hardened as she shouted over the howling wind of the hail, "You're as untouchable as the legends say! But even the coldest winter must end! Decidueye, take the stage!"

With a flash of light, the Hisuian variant of the Arrow Quill Pokémon appeared. Unlike its Alolan cousin, this Decidueye wore a mantle of autumnal red and orange feathers, shaped like a ronin's straw hat.
It stood stoically, its talons gripping the stone, a [Focus Sash] tied around its leg. Azure commanded, "Froslass, don't give it room to breathe! Blizzard!"
*FROOOOOOOOO*
The Mega Froslass shrieked, a sound like grinding tectonic plates of ice. She unleashed a catastrophic wave of sub-zero wind and jagged ice shards that tore across the battlefield as the Blizzard will land while Hail is active.
Maylene yelled, "Now! Sunny Day!"
H-Decidueye didn't flinch. It looked up, its eyes glowing with a harsh, golden light. It raised its wings, and a burst of solar energy erupted from its body. The overhead lights of the gym seemed to intensify a thousandfold as an artificial sun bloomed above the battlefield.
*CRACK-BOOM*
The Blizzard slammed into Decidueye with the force of an avalanche. The bird Pokémon was buried under a mountain of ice. Azure watched intently, but his eyes widened when he saw the golden glow of the [Focus Sash] flare through the ice.
Decidueye burst from the frozen debris, its feathers ruffled and its breath hitching, hanging on by a single thread of willpower—1 HP remaining. But the mission was accomplished. The hail had ceased…
*FLASH*
The sun beat down, evaporating the spectral mist Mega Froslass used to hide. Maylene cried, "She's exposed!"
Azure reacted instantly, "Finish it! Ice Shard!"
Maylene reacted simultaneously, "Decidueye, Endure!"
*Whip*
Froslass flicked her wrists, conjuring shards of ice that shot like bullets toward the wounded owl. But Decidueye braced itself, a glowing aura of grit surrounding it. It took the hit, the ice shattering against its chest, but it refused to fall…
*Zoooom*
Using the momentum of the impact, it lunged forward, closing the distance between itself and the Mega Froslass!
Azure gasped, "What?!"
Maylene yelled, "Now! Triple Arrow!"
Decidueye was inches from Froslass's face. It didn't use a bow. It used its legs.
*THWACK*
The first kick caught Froslass under the chin. The spectral energy around her flickered—the move was Fighting-type, but because of Decidueye's Hidden Ability Scrappy, it struck the Ghost-type with full force. Froslass flinched, her eyes wide with shock.
WHAM!
The second arrow—a concentrated burst of aura-infused feathers—slammed into her torso...
*CRUNCH*
The third strike glowed with a brilliant, lethal gold. A Critical Hit.
The sheer physical force of the ronin-owl's kick sent Mega Froslass flying backward, crashing into the far wall with enough force to crack the masonry. As the dust settled, the Mega Evolution faded, and Froslass slumped to the ground, unconscious.
The referee called, "Froslass is unable to battle!"
The stands erupted. Pearl was screaming his head off as he was baffled by the short battle, "Did you see that?! A Ghost-type getting taken down by a Fighting move? That's illegal! That's gotta be illegal!"
Platinum muttered, her eyes narrowed as she scribbled in her notebook, "Scrappy… It allows Fighting and Normal moves to hit Ghosts. And with the high crit-ratio of Triple Arrow... Maylene played that perfectly."
Azure sighed, a small, respectful smile on his face as he recalled Froslass as he whispered, "Great job, girl. Rest easy."
He looked across the field at Maylene as he complimented her, "You've been doing your homework, Maylene. That was a beautiful sequence."
Maylene wiped sweat from her brow, her Decidueye panting heavily, barely able to stand as she replied, "I told you. I'm playing to win."
Azure said calmly, reaching for his next ball as he replied, "Then let's keep the pace up. Monferno, let's go!"
*Pop*
The Monferno burst onto the field, doing a handspring and landing with a cocky grin. A sash was wrapped around its waist—the [Expert Belt].
Maylene yelled, desperate to heal her Pokémon while the sun was still out, "Decidueye, Synthesis!"
Azure commanded, "Not happening! Fake Out!"
Monferno moved like a golden blur. Before Decidueye could even draw in the solar energy, Monferno was in its personal space.
*CLAP*
A sharp, explosive sound echoed through the gym as Monferno clapped its hands directly in Decidueye's face. The shockwave was small, but against a Pokémon with 1 HP, it was more than enough.
*THUD*
Decidueye's eyes rolled back, and it tumbled backward, finally defeated. The statue speaker announced, "Decidueye is unable to battle!"
Maylene didn't look disappointed; she looked fired up. She recalled her fallen starter and grabbed her most trusted partner's ball as she declared, "You're fast. But let's see how you handle the master of Aura! Lucario, let's go!"
*Pop*
The blue and black bipedal jackal appeared, its aura sensors fluttering. It landed in a perfect crouch, its eyes locking onto Monferno.
Azure commanded immediately, "Monferno, U-Turn!"
Maylene shouted, "Iron Defense!"
Monferno charged, its body glowing with buggy green energy. It slammed into Lucario, but the Steel-type didn't budge. Lucario's skin took on a metallic, chrome-like sheen as its physical defense skyrocketed by two stages.
*DING*
Monferno bounced off the iron-hard chest of Lucario and transitioned into a somersault, retreating into its Poké Ball. Azure caught the ball and immediately declared grabbing a different Poke Ball, "Time for some grace. Lilligant, show them how we dance!"
*Pop*
A flash of light revealed a tall, elegant figure. Unlike the standard Lilligant, this one had long, slender legs and a crown of pink flowers that resembled a sun hat. She stood with the poise of a prima ballerina, her eyes sharp and focused behind a specialized [Zoom Lens] monocle-like device Azure had fashioned for her.
Maylene whispered, her eyes wide, "A Hisuian Lilligant…"
Azure smirked as he said, "Lilligant, Victory Dance!"
Lilligant began to move. It wasn't just a dance; it was a rhythmic, ancient kata. Her movements were fluid and hypnotic, her physical attack, defense, and speed all increasing by +1 Stages as she tapped into the primal spirits of the old Hisui.
Maylene snapped out of it as she barked orders, "Don't let her build momentum! Lucario, use Aura Sphere!"

Lucario brought its paws together, forming a pulsing ball of blue energy. It fired the projectile with pinpoint accuracy.
Azure quickly ordered, "Dodge and use Agile Style Leaf Blade!"

Lilligant's legs blurred. She didn't just run; she leaped, performing a mid-air pirouette that allowed the Aura Sphere to whistle harmlessly beneath her. She descended like a falling guillotine, her arm-leaves glowing with a sharp, emerald light.

The strike was incredibly fast, but because of the Agile Style, it lacked the full weight of her power. It struck Lucario's reinforced chest, leaving a shallow mark on the metallic hide as its eyes narrowed.
Maylene cried, "Is that all? Bone Rush!"
*Wooosh*
Lucario manifested a staff of pure energy and swung. Lilligant moved with a dancer's grace, twisting her body in ways that seemed to defy physics. Every time Lucario swung, Lilligant was an inch away, her [Zoom Lens] allowing her to track the bone's trajectory with terrifying precision, compensating for the natural weakness of her Hustle ability of 20% decrease in accuracy.
Azure yelled, "Drain Punch!"
Lilligant found an opening. She lunged forward, her fist glowing with a green, spiraling energy.

The punch landed squarely in Lucario's gut. The impact sent a ripple through the air, and green sparks flew from Lucario back into Lilligant, mending the small scrapes she had taken from the sun's heat and the earlier skirmish.
Maylene hissed, placing her hand over her Key Stone as she yelled, "Grrr... you're good as they say. But we're just getting started! Lucario, respond to my heart! Beyond evolution—MEGA EVOLVE!"
*FLASH*
A blinding kaleidoscope of light erupted from Maylene's glove and Lucario's Mega Stone. The air pressure in the gym spiked.
Lucario's form shifted, its fur lengthening, the aura sensors on its head growing into four long, streaming ribbons. The red on its paws deepened, and its aura became a visible, roaring flame of blue energy.
Mega Lucario let out a howl that shook the very windows of the gym, "CRAOOOO!! (I shall go all out!!!)"
Maylene's voice was low and dangerous, "Now! Aura Sphere!"
Azure shouted, "Protect!"
Lilligant crossed her arms, a shimmering green barrier forming around her.
*KABOOM*
The Aura Sphere hit the shield and exploded with the force of a grenade. The barrier held, but the sheer shockwave pushed Lilligant back several feet, her heels digging into the floorboards.
Maylene yelled, "Don't let up! Close Combat!"
*ZOOOOM*
Mega Lucario was a blur. It didn't run; it simply appeared in front of Lilligant.
*PUMMEL-PUMMEL-PUMMEL*
A barrage of strikes rained down on the doll-like Pokémon. Lilligant tried to parry, using her own martial arts, but the sheer speed and power of a Mega-Evolved, Adaptability-boosted Lucario was overwhelming. Each punch felt like a falling star.
Azure tried to create space, "Lilligant, use Rock Smash!"
*SMASH*
Lilligant smashed the ground, sending rocks hurling at the Mega Pokémon, but Lucario didn't blink. It spun, the wind from its own movement blowing the debris away before it could settle.
Maylene yelled, her arm outstretched, "Finish this! AURA SPHERE!"
Lucario didn't fire a ball this time. It gathered the energy into a massive, concentrated beam between its palms, slowing the execution, but the power was concentrated to a terrifying degree.
Azure called out, desperation creeping into his tone, "Lilligant, use Victory Dance one more time to dodge!"
Lilligant tried. She began the rhythmic movement, her body straining to find the speed. But the fatigue of the Close Combat had taken its toll…
*Slip*
Her leg caught for a split second on a crack in the floor. That was all Lucario needed to land the critical blow.
Maylene screamed, "NOW!"
The Aura Sphere erupted. It wasn't a projectile; it was a tidal wave of blue light. It engulfed the center of the arena.
*BWAAAA-THOOM*
The light was blinding. Diamond and Pearl shielded their eyes, while Platinum watched with a grim expression. The sound was a low-frequency roar that vibrated in the chests of everyone present.
When the light faded, the dust settled slowly.
H-Lilligant lay on her back in the center of a scorched crater. Her pink crown was tattered, and her eyes were closed. She had fought with the grace of a queen, but the raw, focused power of Mega Lucario had been too much.
The statue speaker announced, "Lilligant is unable to battle!"
Azure stood silent for a moment, the wind from the explosion still ruffling his hair. He looked at the Poké Ball in his hand, then at Maylene, who was breathing hard, her Mega Lucario glowing with a triumphant, albeit exhausted, aura.
Azure smiled—a genuine, thrilled smile as he muttered calmly, "I haven't been pushed like this in a long time, Maylene."
He looked down at the Poké Ball as he stated calmly, "Rest well, Lilligant. You showed them the strength of the old world."
As he returned H-Liligant to her ball, the score was now tied in intensity. Azure still had the lead in numbers, but Maylene had the momentum of a Mega-Evolved powerhouse on her side. Maylene challenged, her eyes burning, "You're down two now, Azure! What's your next move?"
Azure tucked the ball away and reached for his next one. Azure asked with a cool expression, eyeing Mayelene, "Next? Next, I stop playing around. About time I put real effort now…"
Mayelene frowned at his words, but the look in his eyes told it. Azure was finally going to cut loose.
