Chapter 33 - "The Weight of Seven Days"

The jungle clearing is silent. The enemies are gone. But the damage remains.

Atlas lies on his back, his Mythralite arm cracked, his lungs still coughing up black ink. His one good eye stares at the gray sky.

Stella stands over him. Her skin has faint burns from the starlight — red and sensitive, but not severe. She is mildly injured — sore, exhausted, bruised, but still fully capable of fighting. A Homelander-level physique shrugs off most damage. Her jaw is fine. Her bones are intact.

She helps Atlas to his feet. He sways. She catches him easily.

"You look like shit," she says.

He coughs. "Feel like it too."

Katzuki sits against a tree, his leg bent wrong. That's worse. His knee is shattered.

Captain Spirit stands apart, his lightning dimmed, his cloak torn.

The Plague Mask is gone.

No one saw him leave.

Vexxa's footsteps have faded into the jungle. She did not look back.

Stella's Anger — Not Despair

Stella doesn't break down. She doesn't cry. She is furious.

"We were warned," she says, pacing. "They didn't come to kill us. They came to scare us. And it worked."

Atlas watches her. "You're not scared?"

"I'm pissed." She stops. "They hurt you. They trapped you. They made me watch." Her fists clench. "Next time, I'm putting my fist through that Jester's void-face."

Captain Spirit speaks: "The Void Sisters said something worse is coming. The Grave Mind. Seven days."

Stella turns to him. "Then we have seven days to get ready. Train. Fight back."

Katzuki winces, adjusting his leg. "Train how? We don't know anything about this Grave Mind."

A voice from the treeline: "But we do."

Three masked figures emerge from the jungle — the same ones from the archway. The bird-beak, the oni horn, the veil.

The bird-beak speaks: "The Grey Veil will see you. Follow us."

Stella steps forward. "Who's the Grey Veil?"

"Your only hope."

The journey takes an hour. The masked figures lead them through hidden paths, past bone-white streams, through trees that whisper in forgotten languages.

Then they see it.

A ribcage. Miles long. Rising from the jungle like a mountain range. Inside, a monastery carved into the fossilized bones of something that was never human.

"This is where we train," the bird-beak says. "Where we prepare. Where we endure."

Stella stares up at the massive ribs. "What is this place?"

"A dead god. The Grave Mind's brother. We killed it ten thousand years ago. Its bones are the only thing that can shield us from the Hive's gaze."

Atlas whispers: "You killed a god?"

"We helped." The bird-beak turns. "Now come. The Grey Veil is waiting."

Inside the ribcage, a vast chamber lit by blue flames. At its center sits an old woman. Her eyes are covered by a cloth — not because they are damaged, but because she chooses not to see the physical world.

She sees everything else.

"You are broken," she says. "All of you. Not just your bodies. Your spirits."

Stella steps forward. "We're still standing."

The Grey Veil tilts her head. "So you are. That is why I will help you."

She stands. Moves toward Stella. Reaches out — and touches Stella's chest, over her heart.

"You have the strength of a warrior goddess. But you fight with rage. Rage is a fire. It burns bright. Then it burns out."

She moves to Atlas.

"And you. You fight with guilt. You blame yourself for every death, every failure. That weight will crush you before the Grave Mind ever does."

She steps back.

"Seven days. I cannot make you ready. But I can make you less unready."

Deep within the sanctuary, in a chamber lit by blue flames, the Plague Mask kneels before an altar.

The altar holds a single object: a key. Made of bone. Carved with symbols older than human language.

He reaches for it.

A voice — the Grey Veil's — echoes in the chamber.

"That key opens the door to the Grave Mind's prison. If you go there alone, you will not return."

The Plague Mask does not turn.

"Someone must go."

"Not alone."

He pauses.

Then takes the key.

Stella's First Night — No Breakdown

Stella lies on a cot in a small bone chamber. Atlas is beside her, sleeping fitfully, still coughing ink in his sleep.

She stares at the ceiling.

She is not crying. She is not despairing.

She is planning.

The Void Sisters. The Jester. The Grave Mind.

She replays the fight in her head. Every mistake. Every moment she hesitated.

Next time, she thinks, I won't hesitate.

She closes her eyes.

Sleep comes slowly. But it comes.

The Final Scene — The Countdown

Dawn. The first of seven days.

The Grey Veil stands at the center of the training grounds. Masked figures gather in silence.

Atlas, Stella, Katzuki (on a crutch), and Captain Spirit stand before her.

"Today," the Grey Veil says, "you learn to fight what cannot be touched. Tomorrow, you learn to survive what cannot be stopped. By the seventh day..."

She pauses.

"By the seventh day, you will be ready to die."

Stella's eyes narrow.

"Or ready to win."

The Grey Veil's blind face shows the faintest hint of a smile.

"We shall see."
