Shadow Spectra rose fully from the crater, her body no longer holding a defined shape. Dark, writhing shadows rippled across her form like living smoke, constantly shifting and reforming around a vague silhouette. The shadows pulsed with stolen emotional energy, giving off a faint green glow beneath the darkness.
Across from her, Danny hovered in the air, his chest rising and falling slowly as he tried to steady his breathing.
Without another word they shot toward each other again.
Their collision created another violent explosion of ghostly energy that shattered what remained of the parking structure's upper levels. Spectra's shadowy tendrils lashed forward like living whips while Danny answered with blasts of Ghost Rays, emerald beams ripping through the night sky as the two forces clashed repeatedly.
Their battle spilled outward from the parking structure and into the night sky above Star City.
They tore across the skyline like two comets colliding again and again. Danny launched streams of ghost fire while Spectra countered with shadow constructs that twisted and shattered under the pressure of his attacks. Sonic bursts from Danny's ghostly wail ripped through entire billboards and shattered glass windows across nearby buildings, while Spectra retaliated with crushing telekinetic bursts that slammed him through the air.
For several minutes neither side could gain a decisive advantage.
Their fight had become a stalemate.
Explosions of green light and rippling shadows flashed across the skyline as they phased through construction cranes, shattered streetlights, and blasted apart rooftop water towers. Each clash produced shockwaves that rattled the streets below while civilians fled from the chaos unfolding above them.
Through it all Spectra continued to laugh.
Her voice echoed mockingly across the night air even as she fought.
"You're doing much better now," she taunted as their attacks collided again, ghost fire meeting shadow tendrils in a burst of light. "Trying so hard to keep that temper under control."
Danny didn't answer. His jaw tightened as he fired another Ghost Ray that tore through the sky toward her.
Spectra drifted around the blast easily, her shadow form bending and reforming around the attack.
"But it's still there," she continued in a sing-song tone. "That anger. That guilt. That delicious, crippling regret."
Danny appeared in front of her suddenly and drove his fist forward. She blocked with a mass of condensed shadows, the impact sending both of them flying backward as another explosion rocked the air between them.
Spectra tilted her head slightly as she watched him recover.
"You know," she continued thoughtfully, "I have a question if you don't mind me asking"
Danny didn't speak. He simply launched forward again, flames erupting around his arms as he struck toward her.
Spectra slid around the attack and slammed him sideways with a telekinetic burst that sent him phashing through a neon sign before he recovered midair.
"Tell me," she continued casually as if discussing the weather, "which member of your family did you kill?"
Danny's movements stiffened slightly but he continued fighting, launching another barrage of Ghost Rays.
Spectra deflected them with swirling shadows.
"Was it your mother?" she asked.
Danny teleported forward and punched through her shadow form, scattering darkness into the air before it quickly reformed behind him.
"Or maybe your father?"
Their next clash produced another explosion that shattered the windows of an entire apartment building.
Spectra's voice remained calm, amused.
"Brother?"
Danny forced his breathing to remain steady as he countered her next strike with a burst of ghost fire.
"Sister?"
Each word was spoken between violent exchanges of power. Ghost fire erupted. Shadows detonated. Sonic blasts ripped through the sky. Constructs clashed against telekinetic force.
Then Spectra laughed again when she noticed none of them seem to be the answer.
"Oh wait…" She paused as she studied Danny's face more carefully while they circled each other above a wide intersection.
"Was it all of them?"
The moment the words left her mouth Danny's face twitched.
It was small. Barely noticeable.
But Spectra saw it.
Her eyes widened in delighted realization before she threw her head back and laughed loudly. "Hahaha! Oh that is priceless!"
She drifted forward slowly, her shadow form writhing with excitement.
"I don't even know who the real villain here is anymore," she said with cruel amusement. "Is it me… or is it you?"
Danny roared and lunged at her.
He still tried to keep control, still tried to suppress the rage boiling inside him, but Spectra had already seen the crack in his composure.
That tiny falter was all she needed.
The moment his control slipped Spectra surged forward like a tidal wave of living shadow.
Her fist slammed into his face with crushing force.
Danny barely had time to react before another strike hit his ribs, followed immediately by a telekinetic blast that hurled him through the air. Before he could recover she appeared above him and drove both fists downward, smashing him out of the sky like a falling meteor.
Danny crashed straight into the middle of a wide road.
Concrete shattered beneath him as a massive crater formed on impact, asphalt breaking apart and nearby cars flipping from the force.
Before he could rise Spectra descended into the crater after him.
Her shadow-cloaked fists came down again and again.
Each strike slammed into Danny's body with brutal force while also simultaneously siphoning bits of his emotions with every hit.
The ground cracked further with every blow as she pummeled him relentlessly, not giving him even a moment to recover.
Danny tried to raise his force field to block but the barrage was too fast.
Another punch.
Another.
And another.
His body sank deeper into the crater as Spectra continued her assault, her laughter echoing through the ruined street.
Finally she raised her arm high, shadows gathering around her fist as she prepared to deliver the finishing blow.
Then suddenly—A sharp whistle cut through the air.
An arrow streaked across the battlefield.
The anti-ghost arrow struck Spectra squarely in the side.
The moment it embedded itself into her shadowy body it detonated with a burst of specialized energy. Bright electrical currents surged across her form, crackling violently as the anti-ghost technology disrupted her spectral structure.
Spectra screamed as the electricity tore through her shadow body.
The shock blasted her backward, launching her out of the crater and sending her flying a great distance down the ruined street before she slammed into the side of a distant building.
Inside the crater Danny remained lying on his back. Slowly he turned his head toward the nearby rooftop.
Standing there with a bow in hand was Roy.
Danny stared at him for a moment before giving a small nod of acknowledgment and gratitude.
Roy returned the gesture silently.
Danny then turned his gaze back toward where Spectra had been blasted away.
But instead of immediately rising to continue the fight, he remained lying in the crater.
His chest rose and fell slowly as he stared up at the night sky above Star City.
Spectra rose from the shattered wall of the building, her shadowy body pulling itself upward like smoke gathering into a form again. The moment she stabilized in the air a blur of yellow lightning tore through the street. Kid Flash appeared and immediately began circling her at high speed, his feet striking the pavement in rapid succession as he built up momentum. The constant motion generated a spiraling vortex of wind that wrapped around Spectra's form, the violent currents tugging at her shadowy body and holding her momentarily in place as if she had been trapped within a cyclone.
'I can't keep fighting like this…' Danny thought as he bit down on his lip hard enough to draw blood. His body was battered and bruised from the relentless exchange, cuts and fractures running across his form while spectral blood dripped steadily down and stained the crater beneath him a glowing green. 'What is wrong with me, why can't I keep a cool head!'
Danny had never felt so vulnerable against an opponent before. Over the years he had faced countless ghosts and villains and every time he managed to win through a combination of strength and clarity of mind. Against the Lunch Lady, Skulker, Ember, Vantasma, the Phantom Dragon, Johnny 13 and Kitty, Penguin and Desiree, Technus, and every other rogue he had encountered, he had always found a way to push through.
But with Spectra that was becoming harder and harder, almost impossible.
She always knew exactly what to say. Every taunt landed perfectly. Every word twisted at the right moment to provoke him. She knew how to make him lose his cool, how to push against the parts of his mind he tried to keep controlled, how to slip under his skin and poison his thoughts.
Fighting against Spectra wasn't a battle one won through physical force or extraordinary abilities.
Danny slammed his fist against the ground beside him. The crater shook slightly from the impact. He did it again. And again. Each strike cracking the already broken pavement as frustration surged through him.
'She's getting the better of me! How can I avenge all those forced suicides, put those souls and grieving families to rest if I can't even get a hold of myself?'
"Damn it…" Danny muttered, his voice hoarse and strained, sounding raw from shouting and exhaustion.
He forced himself to inhale slowly, his chest rising unevenly as he tried to calm the chaos inside him. His eyes shut tightly as he concentrated on steadying his breathing.
'I can't fight her like this… I need to fight with a cool head.'
Deep within his chest his core began to resonate with his thoughts. It trembled faintly, reacting to the intention forming within his mind. The energy pulsed in slow waves as he exhaled.
'In order to win against Spectra I need to kill all of my emotions.'
His core responded more strongly, the pulse intensifying as if acknowledging the direction his will was taking.
'So she doesn't have any leverage over me I'm going to need a cool head… and an even colder heart.'
The hollowness he was feeling from Spectra siphoning away his emotions made it easier for his core to act. The emptiness inside him gave the power somewhere to settle. The temperature around Danny suddenly began to plummet.
When he exhaled again his breath appeared in a pale cloud in front of him.
'I need to freeze my heart… make it so her words have no effect over me.'
Ice began forming beneath Danny's feet. It started as a thin layer spreading across the cracked stone before rapidly expanding outward through the entire crater. The frozen surface thickened and sharp crystalline spikes began to rise from the ground, growing taller as the energy from his core poured outward uncontrollably.
Danny's eyes flickered between their usual green and a piercing ice blue.
But the most miraculous change was happening inside his chest.
His heart began to freeze.
Energy from his core flowed directly toward the organ, slowly encasing it layer by layer. The transformation was gradual yet absolute. Flesh hardened, structure shifting until the beating heart crystallized into a frozen structure of shimmering ice. Instead of blood, cold energy now coursed through his veins like liquid frost.
His eyes turned completely ice blue.
The transformation settled permanently.
His eyelids lowered slightly, giving his gaze a distant and detached appearance. Any trace of emotion disappeared from his face.
There was no anger.
No frustration.
No regret.
Only cold calculation.
Danny reached out and gripped one of the ice formations beside him. Using it for leverage he slowly pulled himself upright, a faint mist escaping his lips as he exhaled. His gaze moved across the battlefield with silent precision.
Spectra was no longer trapped within Kid Flash's vortex.
Instead she hovered above the ground holding both Roy and Kid Flash in her shadowy hands. Their bodies were battered and bleeding, their faces twisted with pain as they struggled weakly within her grip.
All three of them were staring at Danny in shock.
With every step Danny took forward the ground beneath him froze instantly. Thin sheets of ice spread outward and jagged crystalline structures began forming around his feet without any conscious control.
Spectra felt a sudden shiver run down her spine.
It wasn't from the cold.
It was from Danny's eyes.
He took another step forward.
Then he vanished.
In the next instant he appeared directly in front of Spectra. His movement had been so fast it left no visible trail.
His gaze held no hatred, no rage, barely even recognition toward her existence.
Danny reached forward and grabbed both of Spectra's arms.
The moment his hands made contact ice exploded across her limbs, rapidly climbing along the shadowy extensions and locking them solid in place. The frozen shadows hardened like brittle glass before fracturing violently.
Both arms shattered.
"Ahhhh!!" Spectra screamed as she flew backward, her body landing in a crouch. Where her arms once remained were two frozen stumps sealed in thick ice.
Roy and Kid Flash dropped from the air the moment her grip vanished. They hit the ground roughly, coughing and gasping as they struggled to regain their breath.
"D-Danny?" Kid Flash called out with concern, his voice shaking slightly.
Both of them shivered uncontrollably as the freezing aura around Danny continued to spread.
His snow white hair drifted slightly in the cold air as he looked down at them. The expression on his face sent another shiver down their spines. Something about the emptiness in his gaze made them feel deeply uneasy.
"Go," Danny said coolly.
His voice carried none of the warmth it once had.
"You aren't of much help to me. Robin needs you more than I do."
There was no mockery or hostility in his tone.
Only cold logic.
Danny slowly shifted his gaze toward Spectra as she writhed on the ground.
"She is mine to dispose of," he said quietly. "Don't get in my way or I won't be responsible if you're caught in the crossfire."
