The witness stand
Zoe's POV
The courtroom doors opened again.
This time the man who entered looked younger than the first witness.
Mid-thirties, perhaps.
His wrists were shackled in front of him, and unlike Me Alejandro, he kept scanning the room as though expecting danger to leap out from one of the corners. A faint bruise darkened the side of his jaw. His eyes were restless, his breathing uneven.
He was escorted to the witness stand by two armed officers.
I felt my pulse begin to race.
Something about him felt familiar.
Not his face.
His energy.
The way fear clung to him.
The prosecutor waited until he was sworn in.
"State your name for the record."
"i'm Daniel Carter."
"Mr. Carter, were you a member of the criminal organization led by the man known as the Boss?"
"Yes."
"And are you currently in custody?"
"Yes."
"For kidnapping, conspiracy, and organized criminal activities?"
"Yes."
The prosecutor nodded.
