Zoe's POV
The courtroom doors opened.
And everything inside me changed.
At first, I didn't understand why.
The room had been noisy only moments before. Lawyers speaking in hushed voices. Papers shuffling. The occasional scrape of a chair against the polished floor. Reporters whispering among themselves.
Then the doors at the far end opened.
Two officers walked in.
A man walked between them.
My heart stopped.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
For one terrifying second, I couldn't breathe.
My eyes locked onto him.
And suddenly, I wasn't in the courtroom anymore.
I was somewhere cold.
Dark.
Trapped.
A freezer.
My body remembered before my mind could catch up.
The tattoo.
A black shape curling along the side of his wrist.
The same tattoo.
The same man.
My fingers went numb.
"No..."
The word barely escaped my lips.
Garrett turned immediately.
"Zoe?"
I couldn't answer.
The man walked past us.
