Outside, in the endless darkness that seemed able to swallow even light itself, a bone-piercing cold wind poured in. The newcomer reached back to close the door, shutting out that chill.
"Lord City Lord has returned." The old man looked up at her, asking with hope, "How went the repairs?"
Yan Zheng's face was haggard. Meeting his longing gaze, she let out a soft sigh. "I'm very sorry. We did our best. But the breach keeps growing and truly can't be mended. Right now we can only imprison the beasts that squeeze in at a certain place. As for how long we can hold them there, I have no confidence.
However, as long as we sacrifice one person tonight, we can safely make it through. I just don't know which one of you it will be."
She had rushed back in such haste, yet could only send the chosen one off on their final road. Even as City Lord, her strength was limited; she could do no more for them.
"Bang, bang, bang!"
