In Aerok, there were many races. There were those of the kindered, which were the humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, beastkin, and other races that created their own civilizations and were mostly neutral toward one another.
Then there were those of the dusk: demons, vampires, lycans, goblins, and other races that, instead of creating, mostly take from others. They were closer to monsters than other races.
Among those of the dusk, the lycans were in a rather complicated situation. The monsters do not treat the lycans as their own, as they retain a lot of humanity in them.
The humans also do not treat the lycans as part of humanity, as their beast-like qualities make them more monstrous than even true monsters.
They were sometimes confused with beastkin, but the difference was that they could transform from human to animal, and at night, depending on the moon cycle, they become more aggressive and bloodthirsty.
