"Shit. Shit Shit!" Caleb murmured as the footsteps got louder and louder.
Zara was sitting on the edge of the bed.
Back straight. Hands folded in her lap. Purple eyes fixed on the middle distance with the focused concentration of someone trying very hard to look like nothing was happening.
Her legs were pressed together like she was stopping something.
Caleb looked at her. Looked at the locked door. Could already hear the officers below, methodical and getting closer. Boots on stairs. Doors being opened.
He picked his gun up off the floor where it had landed during the fight.
She tracked the movement immediately. Hand twitching.
He flipped it and held it out to her handle first.
She stared at it. Then at him.
"Hit me." He said.
"...What." She blinked at him.
"With the gun." He said. "Make it believable."
