The hidden chamber lay in silent stillness, its walls dripping with the memory of ancient waters. The air hung thick and heavy, saturated with the scent of aged stone and the faint, metallic tang of something that had been sealed for centuries. The remnants of the shattered Poneglyph lay scattered across the floor like the bones of a forgotten god, their surfaces etched with degraded symbols, their meanings lost to time and age.
Charlie Leonard Wooley stood before the wall, his pith helmet slightly askew, his round wire-framed glasses perched on his nose. His fingers traced the air above the carvings, following the curves and angles of a symbol that dominated the center of the stone. "The arrangement is unmistakable. The concentric rings, the intersection points, the way the lines converge at the apex—this follows a pattern that predates any known civilization."
Lieutenant Bolale Hero stood beside him, her compact honey badger frame vibrating with scholarly intensity. Her thick coke-bottle glasses magnified her warm brown eyes to comical proportions, and her silver-grey fur with its distinctive white stripe bristled with concentration. She pointed a claw at a specific section of the carving. "But the sequence is inverted. The flow moves counterclockwise, not with the natural order. That suggests a deviation from the standard model."
Charlie's head tilted, his brow furrowing. "Counterclockwise? But that would mean the lower spheres are prioritized over the higher ones. That contradicts the established hierarchy."
Bolale's voice was flat. "Unless the hierarchy itself is an illusion. Perhaps the structure is not meant to ascend but to descend—to draw power from above rather than channel it upward."
Charlie's finger traced a different section of the carving. "And these markings here—the angular symbols arranged in a grid formation—they resemble a phonetic structure I have encountered before. The arrangement of vowels and consonants, the way they interact with the central axis—"
Bolale interrupted. "But that would place the command structure outside the primary matrix. Unless the grid is not a phonetic structure at all but a positional one. A set of coordinates rather than a language."
Charlie's eyes widened with the sudden realization. "Coordinates... yes! And the serpent motif that encircles the entire composition—it is not merely decorative. It is a boundary marker, a seal that contains and defines the parameters of the structure."
Bolale nodded, her glasses sliding down her snout with the motion. "A boundary that defines what is included and what is excluded. The serpent consumes its own tail, creating a closed loop. Nothing enters, nothing escapes."
Charlie's voice dropped to a murmur. "Then the structure is not meant to be opened. It is meant to be guarded."
Bolale's voice was flat. "Or it is meant to be opened only by those who understand the true nature of the seal."
Charlie's head snapped around, his finger pointing at a section of the carving that had previously gone unnoticed. "And these markings here—they are not part of the primary structure at all. They are annotations. Glosses. A commentary on the original design."
Bolale leaned in, her brow furrowing. "Commentary by whom? And for what purpose?"
Charlie's voice was flat. "That is the question, isn't it?"
---
Marya, Jannali, and General Tora Afar walked the perimeter of the chamber, their footsteps echoing in the silence. The walls were covered in carvings telling a story in a language older than words, their surfaces worn smooth by centuries of water and time.
Tora gestured toward a fallen slab of stone that lay on the floor, its surface cracked and weathered. "This is where Galit found the Devil Fruit. The ceiling collapsed during the earthquake, and the fruit was concealed within the stone."
Marya's voice was flat, "And he swallowed it."
Tora nodded, her dark eyes fixed on the broken slab. "The ceiling was coming down. He reached in, grabbed it, and then the collapse forced him to ingest it." She paused, her voice dropping to a murmur. "Our ancestors believed the fruit was placed here intentionally. That it was waiting for someone worthy to find it."
Jannali's voice was flat with irony. "And it ended up in Galit's gut. That's one way to prove your worth."
Marya stopped in front of the broken Poneglyph, her hands sliding into her pockets as she examined the damage. The stone was split in two, its surface etched with symbols that had been partially destroyed by the ancient bombardment. Half of the Poneglyph was missing, its fragments scattered across the floor like the bones of a forgotten god.
Jannali stood beside her. "Bloody hell, mate. It's properly stuffed."
Tora joined them. "Many centuries ago, the island was under siege. This Poneglyph was damaged during the attack. Our ancestors decided to move the other two to safety."
Marya reached out, her fingers tracing the roughness of the stone. The surface was worn smooth in some places, rough and jagged in others, a testament to the violence that had destroyed it.
Jannali asked. "What do you reckon?"
Marya looked over her shoulder, her golden eyes fixed on the oracle. "When you were in your trance and we were crossing the bridge, both Sanza and I had visions. What if we could replicate that?"
Jannali's head tilted in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Marya stepped back. "What if I use my mist and you use your power at the same time?"
Jannali's lips pressed in cautious skepticism. "What are you after?"
Marya shook her head. "I don't know. It's just an idea." She paused, her voice dropping to a murmur. "Maybe nothing happens, but..."
Jannali shrugged. "What the hell. Let's give it a go."
Marya nodded, placing her hand on Jannali's shoulder. A glowing beetle began to form on her forehead, its form pulsing with a soft glow. Her eyes glazed over, one milky white, the other black, as the room began to fill with mist.
Tora started to panic, her voice rising with sharp urgency. "What are you—"
Jannali pulled off her scarf, revealing her third eye as it opened and began to focus her abilities.
Charlie and Bolale went silent, their heads snapping around as the room filled with mist.
---
The haze of the mist began to clear, revealing the hidden chamber in its most pristine condition. Ancient Minks, Lunarians, Humans, and Three-Eye Tribe members moved through the space, their forms solid and real, their voices echoing in the silence.
Charlie and Bolale gasped at the sight, their eyes wide with wonder.
Bolale's voice was breathless as she witnessed the impossible. "This is remarkable!"
Tora was tense, her head swiveling as she took in the scene. "What is happening? Where are—"
Charlie interrupted her, "This is the past. This must be during the time in which they were finishing the construction of the chamber."
He rushed to Marya and Jannali, who still stood entranced, their forms frozen in the act of concentration. His voice rose. "This is remarkable!"
He spun, his finger pointing at the three intact Poneglyphs that stood in the center of the chamber. "Look! All three of the Poneglyphs are here!"
He stepped up to the broken Poneglyph, his voice rising with excitement. "Amidst the tides of Kano, when the Moon turns full and the High Tide swells, the Sea grows bitter where the Giant dwells! When the Red Crabs march on the saltwater floor, look for the mountain that opens its door! Ride the bitter green wave straight into the throat, or wait 'til Low Tide and watch the Isle float! Only then will the Phantom Isle of Heh be revealed. Prove yourselves worthy and the eternal pose will break its seal."
Bolale interrupted. "It's a location, then."
Charlie nodded, his hand reaching into his pocket for a pen. The mist began to fade.
Jannali and Marya stood blinking, their bodies swaying with the sudden return to the present. "Bloody hell. I can't believe that happened."
Marya looked at her hand, flexing her fingers with the bewilderment of a woman who had just discovered something new about herself. Her brow furrowed.
Jannali, arms crossed. "What's your problem, mate? I thought you wanted this?"
Marya looked up, her golden eyes distant. "Something my mother told me."
Charlie's head whipped around. "Your mother? But she is—"
Marya nodded. "Yeah, she is. She comes to me sometimes when I am using my power." She paused, her voice dropping to a murmur. "Anyway, she told me something that I don't think I understood at the time."
Jannali's voice was flat. "What would that be, mate?"
Marya looked at her, her golden eyes steady. "That my ability was never supposed to be for combat. It had another purpose."
Bolale holding her chin in consideration. "To commune with those who have passed?"
Marya nodded. "Possibly."
Jannali interrupted. "Bloody hell, mate. That's heavy."
Charlie perked up. "Yes! But think of the possibilities! All of the questions that could be answered!"
Tora interrupted. "The dead should be left to rest."
Everyone turned to look at her, her arms crossed, her dark eyes fixed on the group with the flat intensity of a woman who had just made a statement that brooked no argument.
Tora continued, her voice dropping to a murmur. "They should not be disturbed."
Marya smirked, her golden eyes gleaming with dry humor, "Good point." She paused, her voice dropping to a murmur. "But what if they want to be disturbed?"
Tora narrowed her eyes. "Then they are not truly dead. They are Phantoms."
Charlie interjected. "Only those of—"
Jannali cut him off, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward the exit. "Right. We got what we came for. Time to bugger off."
Charlie squirmed and protested, his voice rising with the desperation of a scholar who had been torn from his research. "But—"
Marya smirked as she followed them out, her golden eyes gleaming with dry humor.
Bolale scurried after them, her voice rising with sharp curiosity. "But how are you going to find it?"
Marya glanced over her shoulder, "We will use the sub. Its systems are advanced."
Tora snorted as she followed, her dark eyes fixed on the group with the flat resignation of a woman who had long ago accepted that the universe was full of chaos.
