Chapter 709 - Chapter 555

The surface of Metis stretches before Charlie like a wound on the ocean's skin. Jagged rocks and twisted metal protrude from the earth in impossible angles. The sky above is a perpetual haze, the sun nothing more than a dim memory filtered through layers of volcanic ash.

Charlie doesn't have time to appreciate the view.

Behind him, a massive cyborg rat-mink barrels through the debris, its metallic teeth gnashing, its singular red eye fixed on his fleeing form.

"You absolute MONGREL!" Charlie's arms flap wildly as he runs, his pith helmet bouncing with each stride. "Is this really necessary?! I haven't done anything to you! I'm an archaeologist! A SCHOLAR!"

The rat-mink screeches in response, gaining ground.

"I have IMPORTANT RESEARCH to conduct! I've discovered—" He glances over his shoulder, trips over a protruding pipe, and somehow keeps his feet. "—things that would change the course of HISTORICAL UNDERSTANDING!"

Another screech. Closer now.

Charlie's legs pump harder. His satchel bounces against his hip, the contents clattering with each step. His glasses have gone askew, and he can feel his pith helmet threatening to abandon him entirely.

"You're making a MISTAKE!" he yells, his voice cracking. "I'm not even WORTH chasing! I'm just a humble academic! I don't—"

The ground gives way beneath him.

He doesn't even have time to scream properly. Just a startled yelp that rises into a full-throated shriek as he plunges into the sinkhole. The darkness swallows him, and the tube—smooth, metallic, clearly artificial—carries him deeper into the island's guts.

-----

Penguin, Shachi, and Uni follow Law through the twisting corridors, their boots echoing against the metal flooring. Behind them, Atlas, Jannali, Bō-Zak, and Kaburo keep pace, weapons ready, eyes scanning every shadow for movement.

Law moves with purpose, his Room expanding and contracting as he navigates the labyrinthine passages. His hat is pulled low, but his jaw is set with determination.

Cyborg footsteps echo from behind. Closer. Faster.

Jannali glances over her shoulder, her hand tightening on Gosan's shaft. "Mate, do you even know where you're going?"

Law's head snaps around, frustration flickering across his features. "Just follow me!"

They round a corner and slam to a halt.

The room before them is vast—a dead end. Blueprints cover every inch of the walls, layer upon layer of schematics and diagrams. Paintings of ships and landscapes hang between the technical drawings. Bookshelves rise to the ceiling, crammed with ancient tomes and scrolls. Monitors flicker with fragmented data, their screens cracked and glitching.

The floor is a disaster zone—papers scattered everywhere, stacks of books teetering precariously, the detritus of centuries of study.

Bō-Zak blows out a plume of smoke, surveying the chaos. "Well. This looks like it leads to nowhere."

Law's glare could strip paint. Bō-Zak's smirk widens in reply, utterly unrepentant.

Jannali grits her teeth. "Bloody hell." She turns toward the door as the sound of cyborgs grows louder, closer. "We're boxed in."

Atlas rushes up beside her, cracking his neck with a deliberate pop. "Looks like we're just going to have to punch through."

His Electro crackles across his knuckles. He's ready to charge.

Just as they're about to launch into the chaos, the door slides closed.

Jannali places a palm flat against the metal surface, feeling the vibrations of the cyborgs on the other side. She looks over her shoulder at the others. "Waddya reckon?"

Shachi crosses his arms, a grim smile on his face. "Well, at least they can't get through the door."

Law's voice is flat. "Yeah. But we can't get out either."

Penguin finds a pile of books and settles onto them with a weary sigh. "Yeah, but we can take a break. Catch our breath."

Everyone looks up at the sound of screaming.

From the ceiling.

A voice they recognize. High. Panicked. Descending rapidly.

Kaburo's hand moves to Kalamaru's hilt. "I think I know that scream."

Bō-Zak's smirk returns. "Now that you mention it, it does sound familiar."

Jannali shakes her head. "Bloody hell, how did he—"

Charlie's body crashes through the ceiling, arms pinwheeling, pith helmet already lost somewhere in the chaos. He's falling fast, his screams rising in pitch.

Atlas moves. His rust-red fur blurs as he launches himself upward, catching the falling archaeologist mid-plummet. They hit the ground together, Charlie cushioned by Atlas's frame.

Charlie gasps, his eyes wide, his chest heaving. He throws his arms around Atlas, squeezing with desperate strength. "Thank you! Thank you! I wasn't sure how I was going to—"

Atlas pries Charlie's grip from him, his blue eyes rolling. "All right, all right. Get off me!"

Charlie releases him, nodding frantically. Tears well in his eyes—genuine, unashamed tears of relief.

Jannali steps forward, her arms crossed, her head tilted. "Bloody hell, mate. How'd ya end up stacking it through the roof?"

Charlie braces himself on his knees, gasping. "It's a long story! I was chasing Ember, then got separated, then I was running for my life, so I climbed up and found myself on the surface—" He waves a hand vaguely. "—and then I was chased AGAIN and fell into a hole and—"

Jannali waves him off, losing interest mid-sentence. "Yeah, yeah. Just don't get separated again."

Charlie shakes his head, pushing himself upright. "I don't intend—"

He stops.

His eyes sweep across the room—the books, the blueprints, the monitors. His expression shifts from exhaustion to wonder.

Uni gestures at Charlie with a thumb. "He a part of your crew?"

Bō-Zak blows out a lazy plume of smoke. "Yeah. He reads a lot."

Penguin, Shachi, and Uni nod in unison, as if this single statement explains everything about the panting, disheveled archaeologist.

Law's voice cuts through the moment. "We need to figure out how to get out of here!"

Everyone turns to Charlie when he shouts—

"No!"

He's already moving, rushing to a bookshelf, his fingers tracing the spines with reverence. "We're right where we need to be!"

The banging on the door intensifies. Metal groans. Something on the other side is trying very, very hard to get in.

Bō-Zak's smirk returns as he lights his pipe. "Wonder how long that'll hold."

---

Everyone spins at the sound of footsteps—slow, deliberate, measured. They echo through the chamber, rising above the chaos of the banging door.

A silhouette materializes from the shadows. Massive. Imposing. A warthog mink, half-consumed by cybernetic modifications. His right arm gleams with metal plating. His left leg is a construct of pistons and gears. His eye—his remaining organic eye—is warm and intelligent.

The group tenses. Hands fall to weapons. Law's fingers curl, ready to expand his Room.

The warthog mink raises his arms, palms open. "I mean you no harm."

Kaburo's hand remains on Kalamaru's hilt. "You speak?"

The warthog mink nods, a gentle smile crossing his weathered features. "I do. I am known as the Whisperer."

Penguin rubs the back of his neck. "The Whisperer? What kind of name is that?"

The Whisperer's grin widens. "The kind given to one who is not under her influence."

Law's eyes narrow. "Whose influence would that be?"

The Whisperer moves to a small round table covered in stacks of books. He lowers himself into a chair, the metal joints of his leg hissing with each movement. "The will of Athene."

Jannali's brow furrows. "What the bloody hell is that?"

The Whisperer's voice is patient, measured—like a teacher addressing students who don't yet understand the lesson. "The entity that rules this island. She imposes her will on those who cross her path."

Charlie clears his throat, stepping forward. "If I may?" The Whisperer nods. "This entity you speak of—could it be that she is a mechanism of some sort? An artificial intelligence?"

The Whisperer opens his mouth to respond—

Law cuts in. "Why are you not like the others?"

The Whisperer's grin returns, warm and approving. "That is a more interesting question."

Charlie scoffs, crossing his arms.

The Whisperer continues, his voice taking on a storyteller's cadence. "I am not like the others because I was chosen by the precious whisper. That whisper broke me free of Athene's will and showed me the truth behind our being."

Atlas's arms cross, his Electro crackling with agitation. "And what is that supposed to mean?"

The Whisperer nods slowly. "I will show you. As I was shown."

A beam of light emanates from his cybernetic eye, projecting an image into the air above the table. The group watches, transfixed, as the holographic narrative unfolds.

---

The image shows a ship—massive, angular, impossibly advanced. Its hull is a study in stealth technology, all sharp angles and radar-deflecting surfaces. This is a prototype of something far older, far more dangerous.

The Whisperer's voice narrates the images.

"Long before the Void Century, before the World Government, before any of the history you know—there was an experiment. A weapon designed to challenge the very foundations of the world."

The image shifts. The ship sails through turbulent waters, its crew—shadowy figures in ancient garb—manning stations that glow with an otherworldly energy.

"This vessel was a prototype. A potential Ancient Weapon, built to be used against Imu himself. But it failed. Catastrophically. The weapon never fired. The ship was deemed a catastrophic loss and sunk into the depths."

The image darkens. The ship plunges into a volcano, its hull disappearing into the molten rock.

"Lost at sea. Buried alive. Forgotten."

The image shifts again—the volcano erupts, cracks forming in its surface. The ship emerges, transformed. Its hull has fused with volcanic rock, creating something new. Something monstrous.

"When the world broke—when everything that was known shattered—the ship awoke. It was released from its cage. But the centuries of submersion had deformed it. Malfunctioned its systems."

The image reveals the ship's new form—an island. Elongated. Rectangular. Looking exactly as it is now, all jagged edges and barren terrain.

"The ship's three AIs were activated. Two were destroyed in the chaos. The third survived. Her name was Athene."

The image shows a face—beautiful, manic, flickering with glitches. A mermaid's face, twisted by madness.

"Athene is trapped in a single loop command: 'Do whatever it takes to save the world for the final battle. Adapt and create new weapons.'"

The image shifts again—ships being pulled into whirlpools, passengers being dragged to the conversion chamber, cyborgs emerging from the murk.

"She has interpreted this command literally. The magnetic turbines beneath the island create whirlpools that drag passing vessels into her clutches. She absorbs the ships. She converts the passengers into cyborg weapons."

The image shows rows upon rows of stasis pods, sleeping figures visible through the frosted glass.

"She believes she is saving the world. She does not understand why her victims scream."

The Whisperer's eye goes dark. The projection fades.

Silence fills the chamber.

Penguin lets out a low whistle. "Well. That's... something."

Shachi's voice is uncharacteristically serious. "What do you want to do now, Captain?"

Law's gaze is fixed on the empty air where the projection hung. His jaw works. His fingers curl.

Before he can answer, the banging on the door grows louder.

The Whisperer rises from his chair, his metal joints hissing. "The cyborgs will break through soon. But there is another path." He gestures toward a bookshelf at the back of the room. "Behind that shelf is a passage. It leads to the core of this island—to Athene herself."

Charlie's eyes go wide. "To the central processing unit of the AI that controls everything?!"

The Whisperer nods. "To the heart of the machine."

Atlas cracks his neck. "Sounds like a plan to me."

Jannali rolls her shoulder, her hand falling to Gosan's shaft. "Right then. Let's get a move on."

Bō-Zak grins, his pipe still smoking. "Finally. Something interesting."

Kaburo's hand remains on Kalamaru's hilt, his eyes fixed on the shaking door. "We're running out of time."

The door groans. Metal warps. Something is about to break through.

Law moves first, striding toward the bookshelf. "Everyone, behind me. We're going to the core."

Penguin, Shachi, and Uni fall into step behind their captain without question.

Atlas, Jannali, Bō-Zak, and Kaburo exchange glances—then follow.

The bookshelf slides aside, revealing a dark passage. The group moves as one, plunging into the shadows.

Behind them, the door explodes inward. Cyborgs surge into the room—

But the passage is already closing. The bookshelf slides back into place, sealing them in darkness.

They walk deeper into the island's guts, following the Whisperer's lead.

Ahead, something ancient waits.

Ahead, Athene waits.
