Chapter 711 - Chapter 556

The stairwell descends into the island's guts like a wound that refuses to heal. Rusted metal steps spiral downward, each one groaning under the weight of the group's boots. The air grows thicker, heavier, carrying the stench of old oil and older secrets.

Law leads the way, his Room flickering at the edges of his perception. Behind him, Penguin, Shachi, and Uni move in practiced formation. Atlas's Electro crackles with nervous energy. Jannali's hand stays close to Gosan. Bō-Zak's pipe has gone cold, his eyes scanning the shadows. Kaburo's silence is absolute, his hand resting on Kalamaru's hilt.

And at the rear, Charlie gasps for breath.

His legs burn. His lungs feel like they've been filled with sand. He stumbles, catches himself on the wall, and buckles over. "Do you think we could—" He stops, panting, his pith helmet threatening to abandon him entirely.

Kaburo looks over his shoulder, his jaw flexing with barely concealed impatience. He turns, grabs Charlie by the arm, and drags him forward. "Don't get left behind."

Charlie flails, his satchel bouncing against his hip. "But—"

"No." Kaburo's voice is flat. Final.

They continue downward.

---

The archway at the base of the steps looms before them, its edges rough and uneven. Faint light spills through, casting long shadows across the corridor.

Law raises his hand, fist clenched. The group stops.

Uni's voice is barely a whisper. "What is it, Captain?"

Law leans closer to the edge, his fingers brushing against the cold stone as he peels around the corner. His eyes narrow. "I hear something."

---

Heath Kagen stands at a damaged console, his fingers dancing across cracked dials and unresponsive buttons. His wire-rimmed glasses have slipped down his nose, and he pushes them up with an impatient gesture. The interface port at the base of his skull glows faintly blue-green.

Footsteps echo from the corridor behind him.

He doesn't turn. "You're supposed to be on the surface."

Juuhakai Kurosu shuffles into the room, his massive frame casting a long shadow. The anteater head on his shoulder flicks its tongue, searching for insects that don't exist. He finds a seat—a crate of rusted metal—and lowers himself onto it with a grunt. His hand goes to his flask.

"No." He shakes the empty vessel, his expression souring. "I'm getting off this rock."

Heath pauses, his fingers hovering over the console. He looks up, his blue-grey eyes cold. "The will of Athene—"

Kurosu's voice rises, sharp and bitter. "I spit on the will of Athene. That crazy bitch—"

Heath slams his palm against the console. The sound echoes through the chamber like a gunshot. "That is BLASPHEMY!"

Kurosu jumps to his feet, his cannon-hand already humming with barely contained energy. The anteater head on his shoulder hisses.

Before either of them can move, the air shimmers.

Athene materializes between them, her holographic form flickering with instability. Her manic mermaid features twitch, her eyes darting from one face to the other. Her image glitches—splitting, reforming, splitting again.

Her voice echoes, layered and distorted. "System override protocols. Initiating prime directive..."

Kurosu stiffens. His body goes rigid.

"Command protocols..."

An electric surge rips through him. His eyes glaze over, the pupils dilating unnaturally. When he speaks, his voice carries the hollow resonance of a machine.

"Intruder alert. Security protocols activated."

Heath's expression shifts from fury to satisfaction. "Resume search. Take a team to the ship assimilation dock."

Kurosu nods, his movements mechanical. "Affirmative."

He turns and marches from the room, his footsteps heavy and regular.

Athene floats across the space, her form trailing wisps of corrupted data. "We must..." She pauses, her head tilting at an angle that should be impossible. "We must... the world... it is falling... it is broken..."

She drifts as if searching for something lost in the static.

"It needs... it needs..."

Her eyes find Heath.

"We are the only ones..."

Heath smiles. It's not a warm expression—it's the smile of a man who has found his purpose in the ruins of everything else.

"I know." His voice is soft, almost tender. "We are the only ones who can end the carnage and save this world."

Athene's glitching intensifies. Her form fragments, reforms, fragments again. "At all cost..." Her voice becomes a whisper, fraying at the edges. "We must..."

Heath steps toward her, his hand reaching out as if to touch her cheek. He stops just short. "Go and rest."

Athene nods, her manic energy fading into something softer. "Yes. I should rest..."

She dissolves, her form scattering into particles that fade into the gloom.

---

Still concealed behind the archway, Law's eyes track the scene through the narrow gap. His heart pounds against his ribs.

Shachi's voice is barely a breath. "Why doesn't he look like the rest of them?"

Law shakes his head, his hand still resting on his blade. "I don't know."

Charlie clears his throat, and everyone's head snaps toward him. He straightens his pith helmet, a spark of academic excitement flickering in his eyes. "I may have an explanation—"

Law's hand is on his arm in an instant. "Quiet!"

A cry echoes from the chamber beyond. Heath struggles against invisible bonds, his body wrapped in chains that seem to materialize from shadow.

Law peeks around the corner again. "What the hell?"

A Grim Reaper holds Heath in place, its skeletal fingers wrapped around the chains. Another hovers at the entrance to the stairwell, its scythe raised, pointing in a single direction.

Law, Penguin, Shachi, and Uni jump back, their hands going to their weapons.

Atlas's eyes light up with recognition. "Hey, it's the boss. Looks like she wants us to go."

Jannali's voice carries a note of exasperation. "Bloody hell. Did she have to rock up looking like a circus?"

Atlas shrugs, already moving. "You know the boss."

He strides confidently down the steps, passing the tense Heart Pirates without a second glance. Jannali, Bō-Zak, Kaburo, and Charlie fall into step behind him.

Atlas glances over his shoulder. "You coming?"

Charlie huffs as he passes Law, his breath still uneven. "Just... just keep moving."

Shachi's voice is uncertain. "What do you say, Captain?"

Law's eyes remain fixed on the Reaper. It hasn't moved. It hovers in place, its scythe still pointing the way, waiting.

He considers the options. The corridor behind them is blocked. The Reaper's direction is the only path forward.

He nods. "Yeah. Let's go."

They move as one, following the Reaper's silent guidance.

They pass Heath Kagen, still bound in chains, his mouth covered by a strip of shadow. He struggles against his restraints, his muffled cries promising violence. The Reaper holding him jerks his chains, forcing him still.

Penguin's voice is low, disturbed. "If that's Marya, she must be really scary now."

Law's eyes narrow as he moves to take the lead, following the scythe-wielding Reaper. His hand doesn't leave his blade.

Behind them, the chains clink softly.

Ahead, the Reaper's scythe gleams in the gloom.

And somewhere deeper in the island, Athene's broken consciousness stirs in its cage of corrupted data.
