Chapter 85 - Forced Recall

The next day felt wrong before it even began.

Matthew woke with a headache he couldn't explain.

Not sharp—just… heavy. Like something was pressing against his thoughts from the inside.

Rin spilled her drink twice before leaving the house.

Sora couldn't stop tapping that same rhythm—four beats, pause—over and over again.

None of them said anything.

But all of them felt it.

After school, they met again.

Same place.

Same time.

Same routine.

But today, someone was waiting.

Harper stood at the end of the street, motionless.

She didn't wave.

Didn't call out.

Just watched.

Matthew slowed. "Do you know her?"

Rin shook her head. "No… but I feel like I should."

Sora didn't speak.

Her eyes were locked on Harper.

And Harper… was staring straight back.

They approached cautiously.

Harper took a step forward.

"You don't remember me," she said.

Not a question.

A statement.

Matthew frowned. "Should we?"

Harper's expression tightened—not anger, not sadness. Something deeper.

Disappointment.

"You were there," she said quietly. "All of you. You saw what happened. You watched people disappear. You fought to survive."

Rin crossed her arms. "Okay, that's not funny."

"I'm not joking."

Sora stepped closer, her voice softer. "What are you talking about?"

Harper hesitated.

Then she said the word.

"Death Land."

The world didn't react.

Cars kept moving.

People kept walking.

But the three of them—

froze.

Matthew's breath caught.

Rin's fingers twitched.

Sora's hand flew to her head.

For just a second—

a flash.

A staircase.

Red light.

A fall.

Then it was gone.

"No," Rin said quickly, shaking her head. "I don't know what that is."

"You do," Harper insisted. "You just can't access it."

Matthew took a step back. "Look, I don't know what you think happened, but—"

Harper grabbed his wrist.

Hard.

And suddenly—

the world shifted.

Matthew gasped.

Not physically—mentally.

Like his mind had been yanked sideways.

A flood of noise—static, voices, echoes—

"Run—"

"Don't trust—"

"It's not real—"

"Matthew—!"

He ripped his hand away, stumbling back.

"What was that?!" he shouted.

Harper's eyes widened slightly.

"You felt it."

Rin stepped between them. "Don't touch him!"

Sora, however, didn't move.

She was staring at Harper, trembling.

"Do it again," Sora whispered.

Rin snapped, "Sora, no—"

But Harper nodded slowly.

"Okay."

She stepped closer.

This time, Sora reached out first.

Their hands met.

And everything broke.

Sora saw herself—

Standing in a cathedral of mirrors.

Wearing a mask.

Fighting something that looked like her.

She heard a voice:

"You are not the original."

She felt fear.

Pain.

And something else—

determination.

Then—

darkness.

Sora collapsed to her knees, gasping.

"It's real…" she whispered. "It's all real…"

Matthew stared at her. "What did you see?"

Sora looked up, eyes wide.

"We weren't supposed to forget."

Rin stepped back slowly.

"No," she said. "No, I don't want this."

Harper turned to her.

"You don't get to choose," she said softly. "It already happened."

Rin shook her head harder. "Stop."

The air around them flickered.

Just slightly.

Like heat distortion.

Harper noticed immediately.

"…It's reacting."

Matthew looked around. "What is?"

A nearby streetlight buzzed loudly—then exploded.

Glass shattered across the pavement.

People screamed. Cars stopped.

But no one looked at the four of them.

It was like they weren't even there.

Harper's voice dropped.

"It doesn't want you to remember."

Sora stood slowly, still shaking.

"Then we make it let us."

Rin stared at both of them like they were insane.

"You're saying there's some system controlling reality?!"

Harper met her gaze.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

a voice.

Not from any direction.

Not from any speaker.

From everywhere.

From inside.

"Unauthorized recall detected."

"Memory restoration in progress."

"Correction required."

The sky flickered.

Just once.

But this time—

Matthew saw it.

Perfect, straight lines cutting through the clouds.

Like something behind reality was waking up.

Harper stepped closer to them.

"This isn't over," she said. "It never was."

Matthew clenched his fists.

"Then we finish it."

Rin looked between them—fear, anger, disbelief all fighting inside her.

"…If you're right," she said slowly, "then we're already back in the game."

Sora nodded.

"Yeah."

Her eyes lifted to the sky.

"And this time…"

"It followed us."
