Chapter 27 - The Break

Evelyn's chance came in the form of a woman named Dr. Collins.

Dr. Collins was a researcher at a university who studied financial inclusion, and a friend of Mrs. Clarke. She had been testing Market Link with traders in three neighboring towns, and she had been quietly impressed.

"This is not a toy," she told Evelyn, over lunch in a small restaurant. "You have solved a real problem. Women who never had a financial record now have one."

"It's only an early version."

"Yes. But it works." Dr. Collins put down her fork. "There is a development fund, a small one, for tech projects that promote inclusion. I think you should apply."

"Me?" Evelyn blinked. "I'm nineteen. I'm a student."

"Your age is not the problem. Your age is your advantage." Dr. Collins slid a folder across the table. "The deadline is in three weeks."

Evelyn and Ella worked on the application together, night after night. Ella wrote the business case, the market size, the revenue model. Evelyn wrote the technical plan. Grace, from the corner of the room, read the drafts out loud and told them which sentences sounded false.

"This one," she would say. "'Leverage synergies.' What is that?"

"It's what investors like to hear."

"But what does it mean?"

"…Nothing," Evelyn admitted.

"Then remove it."

The final application was clear and honest. It spoke about the women, the notebooks, the market, the stall that had been crushed under a bulldozer. It did not sound like a startup pitch. It sounded like a story.

Four weeks later, a letter arrived.

Evelyn, who had been hovering by the gate for days, ran inside holding it above her head.

"Ella! Mama! It's here!"

They gathered around the table. Evelyn tore it open with trembling hands. She read the first line and sat down.

"Evelyn?" Grace said. "What does it say?"

Evelyn could not speak. She passed the letter to Ella.

Ella read it, and her eyes went wide. "Mama. They've approved the grant. And it's… it's bigger than we asked."

"What?"

"Seed funding. And a mentor. And office space for a year."

For a moment, the room was perfectly still. Then Grace let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-sob, and wrapped both girls in her arms.

"My daughters," she said into Evelyn's hair. "My brilliant daughters."

"Mama, I'm going to need to drop out of School," Evelyn said quickly, voice muffled. "Or at least take a leave. I can't do both."

Grace pulled back. She looked at her youngest, her quiet one, her dreamer, and her face went very serious.

"No."

"Mama…"

"You will not drop out. You will finish your degree. We will find a way to do both."

"But the company…"

"The company will wait. A degree is something nobody can take from you." Grace said it with the force of someone who had paid in sweat for every piece of paper her girls held. "You will do both."

Evelyn looked at Ella for help. Ella grinned.

"She's right. It will be hell. But you can do it."

Evelyn laughed, wiping her eyes. "Okay. Both."

It would be harder than any of them knew. But that was a problem for tomorrow. Tonight, there was cake.
