Chapter 803 - Chapter 22: Epilogue

Neville, Susan, and Hannah were sorted into Hufflepuff.

The hat found it hard to decide about Dudley, but eventually sorted him into Hufflepuff, too.

Hermione and Harry were quickly sorted into Ravenclaw. Dudley later told them, "The hat also considered Ravenclaw, mainly due to the knowledge I already have, but I wanted to stay near Susan, and the hat agreed I'd do better in Hufflepuff, not being as studious as expected of a Ravenclaw.

The sorting was interrupted twice. Draco Malfoy was sorted into Gryffindor, and he didn't agree with that. Since he was also enrolled at Drumstrang, Headmistress McGonagall suggested calling his Mum after the feast and having him moved there. Years later, Harry would hear that the boy didn't survive that school. His arrogance and idiocy made him a target for many vicious pranks and even some direct attacks. One of them eventually killed him.

"The hat cannot be overruled," the headmistress told him.

"But Dumbledore said…" the boy started whining.

"Ex-professor Dumbledore has no say in the school any longer. You can either go to Slytherin or be sent back home to be home-schooled. Should I call your mother to come and get you?"

Mentioning his mother did the trick. "No. I'll go wherever you put me." Ron sounded defeated and dispirited. He was lucky, though. Without Snape and with the new, rule-driven headmistress, no bullying was tolerated, and he could be safe in any house, although not necessarily liked. Yet Ron proved unworthy of any house. With nobody to do his homework for him or to spoon-feed him the lessons, he had to repeat the first year twice and the second year too. His parents then took him out of Hogwarts to save the tuition, since it seemed he was only wasting it. Ron ended up as a janitor in the Ministry and was later fired for incompetence. Harry never heard what happened to him later.

They were the top students in their classes, but never showed their full abilities unless they had no audience. Dudley considered teaching some of it to Susan, but she was fixated on the traditional ways of magic and couldn't adapt. This didn't prevent him from asking her to be his girlfriend by the end of their third year, about the same time that Harry and Hermione became an official couple.

It took Neville two more years before he found the courage to ask Hannah to become his girlfriend. Her agreement helped boost his confidence and urged him to reach better achievements. He left mediocrity behind and became one of the top students in Hufflepuff, second only to Dudley.

Their sixth year was marked by becoming much closer. Hermione guessed that the first time they'd become physical, the bond between them would become a full magical bond, recognised as equivalent to marriage. The idea somewhat frightened Harry, and he didn't rush it.

Dudley didn't consider that possibility, probably not being aware of the preliminary bond. When he and Susan showed their love to each other with no restrictions, they were soon engulfed by a glowing mist that vanished with a flash when they reached their peaks. They got the Ministry's confirmation of their marriage the next morning.

Hermione wasn't deterred by that and felt like she could wait no longer. And when she wanted something, Harry could never say no. Their bonding literally shook the castle. Headmistress McGonagall searched for the cause and found them sleeping soundly in one of the unused classes that seemed the source of the shaking, both naked. Well, shaking a castle can be quite exhausting. She only conjured a blanket and covered the couple, also leaving a note to come and see her in the morning.

They lost a few points to Ravenclaw but got their married couple apartment and regained the lost points within two days.

Neville couldn't accept the idea of losing her. While the idea of shagging her was quite frightening, it was much more attractive. He did his part, resulting in marriage confirmation letters the next morning.

Hannah was not as prudent as her two friends. She used no contraceptives, and it was the middle of her cycle. Could she have planned it this way? Three weeks later, it was becoming evident that she missed her period. A quick visit to the infirmary confirmed her pregnancy. Hannah seemed elated, while Neville seemed both elated and frightened. That was probably because he could no longer hide his marriage from his grandmother.

Hannah gave birth at the beginning of the seventh year. She missed her period again at the graduation ball.

With no Death Eaters, on one hand, and with Dumbledore removed from any influence, on the other, Magical Britain started changing, advancing into the modern era. It was much slower than any muggle-raised would have liked, but much faster than anybody thought it could happen.

When Harry joined the Wizengamot at age twenty-three, it already had half its members elected by the public, and there was an initiative to adopt the Muggle structure of having a House of Lords and a House of the Elected. It would take another decade or two before that would happen, though.

Susan wanted a big family. She hadn't started as early as her friend Hannah, but she got pregnant soon after graduation and then kept to one child every two years, making Petunia a proud grandmother. Vernon still cringed whenever one of his grandchildren had some "accidental magic" event, although most were not accidental at all. Dudley, just like Harry, taught his children how to use their magic to the fullest at an early age.

And Dumbledore? He died in his house at Godric Hollow about two years after his forced retirement. He had no house elf to look for his needs, and it was only after he hadn't answered his Floo for several days that Aberfroth came to check on him and found his cadaver starting to decompose.

The only person from Hogwarts who came to the funeral was Minerva McGonagall. Despite his faults, Albus had been her mentor and had done great things, although not as great as he'd liked people to think. A low-level clerk from the ministry was also present. After all, the man had presided over the Wizengamot for many years. He deserved some acknowledgement.

Sirius Black never married despite continuing to date for many years. He initially wanted Harry to inherit the Lord Black title. Harry preferred to pass it to Teddy, Andromeda's grandchild, who had graduated from Hogwarts long before Sirius felt old enough to stop sitting at the Black seat in the Wizengamot. When Sirius retired, Teddy's children were already close to finishing Hogwarts.

At his hundredth birthday, surrounded by children, grandchildren, and already a few great-grandchildren, as well as many friends, Harry felt content. Whenever his time would come, he could look back on his life and feel proud of what he and Hermione had achieved. They hadn't managed to make many people use wandless and silent magic, but their descendants, at least, mastered it just as well. It would be a task for the coming generations, but that was alright. He hugged his wife and smiled, his thoughts wandering to their bed and the fun they would soon have there. And they no longer needed any contraceptives!
