Chapter 246 - Chapter 246 – “The Faces of the Wind”

I. The Murmur of the Past

The city of Edenfall still stood, though its roots never truly dissolved. The rebuilding process continued at a pace that, while visible, did not dispel the sense of incompleteness that had settled into its foundations. The golden flower in the center of the main square, though beautiful, still radiated a light that was no longer merely a symbol of rebirth , but a constant reminder of the events the city had endured.

Akihiko walked through the streets with a determined stride, but his mind was far from the calm his body displayed. The emptiness he had experienced before, that echo of the shadows , continued to grow within him, and although he couldn't explain it, he felt it was only part of what Edenfall had to face. There was something beyond the ruins he had left behind, something not even the Tree had fully revealed.

"We are not merely victims of what happened," Akihiko thought, as he gazed at the city streets. "We are the bearers of what is to come. And this emptiness… it's not just mine."

Beside him, Kaede walked in silence, her gaze fixed on the horizon, but something in her eyes reflected a deep uncertainty . Although she had sensed the presence of something strange in the city, she also felt that Akihiko was more distant than before. The emptiness within him didn't just affect him; it extended to those around him.

" Akihiko, what's really going on?" Kaede asked, without looking away. "What we're feeling... it's not just the Tree's influence, is it?"

Akihiko paused for a moment, feeling the presence that had spoken to him in his mind. The words of the mysterious figure, that memory of the Tree , continued to resonate within him, like an endless echo. Why had it chosen him? What did the Tree truly want?

" I don't know," Akihiko replied with a sigh, but there was something different in his tone, something he hadn't shown before. "What we've done hasn't solved everything. The Tree was only one part. And now, something is awakening."

II. Voices in the Wind

Suddenly, the wind began to blow harder. Kaede felt a strange presence around her, as if the shadows that had been creeping through the city were coming to life. Akihiko, his gaze fixed, also felt the intensity of what was happening. It wasn't just the wind. It was as if the roots of the Tree, though faded, were moving through the city, touching the minds of its inhabitants.

The shadows seemed to twist , as if the echoes of the past the Tree had left behind were awakening once more. Kaede , though she didn't fully understand, knew that Akihiko was connected to something much larger than the city itself. Something that, deep down, also belonged to her.

" Listen…" Akihiko said, his voice growing deeper . "Something is changing. It's not just the wind. It's the voices of what we've awakened."

At that moment, a figure appeared from the shadows, as if it had come out of nowhere . It wasn't an enemy. It wasn't an immediate threat. But its presence drew Akihiko's attention like an invisible magnet . The figure was slender , with indistinct features , but what made it different from any other presence in the city was that it seemed to vanish and reform with every step it took.

" Who are you?" Kaede asked, sensing that something in the atmosphere had changed with the arrival of the figure.

The figure did not respond immediately. Instead, it simply appeared before them, as if it had been expecting their arrival.

" I have been watching ," the figure said finally, its voice a whisper from the shadows . "The Tree is neither the beginning nor the end, as many believe. It is merely a gateway to what was sealed away."

Akihiko watched her cautiously. What did that mean?

" Who are you really?" Akihiko insisted, his tone unwavering. "What do you know about the Tree?"

The figure smiled, but it wasn't a friendly smile. It was enigmatic , as if it understood more than it could reveal.

" I am an echo of those who came before," the figure replied. "I am what was left behind. What survived when the door closed. The Tree was not the beginning, but neither was it the end. And now, what remains is beginning to reclaim its place."

III. The Revelation of the Wind

Akihiko frowned, but didn't move. Something in the figure's voice resonated with the same strange presence he'd felt at first. This figure wasn't an enemy . Not a force of destruction . But its presence meant that something more was at stake . What the Tree had left behind affected not only the city, but the very balance of reality.

" What are you trying to say?" Kaede asked, her voice firm but filled with unease.

The figure looked at them both with a somber, wise expression , as if it were reading their souls .

" The Tree is only a part of what is to come," he replied, his voice filled with profound knowledge. "What is being sealed is not only in the Tree, nor in this city. It is beyond the roots. It is beyond the minds. It is in the very shadows of the world."

Akihiko and Kaede looked at each other, fear beginning to take shape in their minds. What the Tree had started wasn't just a cycle. It was an echo of something much older, bigger, more dangerous.

" What do we have to do?" Akihiko asked, his words grave but full of determination. "How can we stop what's coming?"

The figure smiled again, but this time, the smile seemed to be a harbinger of something they did not yet understand.

" You can't stop it. Not yet," the figure said, as its form slowly began to fade . "But you can choose what you will do when it comes. The future is full of choices. The Tree has only given you the key. Now it's up to you to decide how to use it."

With those words, the figure disappeared into the wind, leaving behind a profound silence .

IV. Choosing the Trip

Akihiko and Kaede stood there, staring at the spot where the figure had been. The wind no longer blew with the same intensity, but the air was heavy with a presence they could n't quite decipher.

"What we have awakened is not just the Tree," Akihiko thought, as he looked at Kaede. "It is much greater. And we must be prepared."

Kaede nodded slowly, but something in her eyes reflected a new concern . Although Edenfall seemed at peace , they both knew that what had been awakened was not something they could easily stop .

"The city may be rebuilding itself," Akihiko thought, "but we must find answers. And we have to do it before it's too late."
