Chapter 4 - In the Shadow

Chapter 4: In the Shadow

Monday, October 12, 2009

Monday morning was rainy at the training ground. The weather was cold and gray, and the rain had been falling for most of the morning.

After two wins in a row, things felt a little different around Crawley Town. The fear of relegation was still there, but it didn't feel quite as bad as before.

Niels noticed it as soon as he walked onto the pitch. The players seemed more confident. They weren't acting arrogant or getting carried away. They just looked like they believed they could win.

When Niels arrived, the players were already warming up. They jogged around the pitch while their breath showed in the cold air.

Milan stood at the other end, watching them closely. He noticed every mistake and every small detail.

Niels dropped his bag on the bench and stepped onto the wet grass.

"Morning, boss," Niels called as he walked over.

Milan looked at him and nodded. His attention was still on the players.

"You watched the match again this weekend?" Milan asked.

"Of course," Niels said as he pulled on his training top. "Didn't take long to see what we did well."

Milan smiled slightly.

"Want to take today's training?"

Niels paused for a moment. He was nervous, but he already knew his answer.

"Yeah. I think I'm ready."

Milan smiled.

"Alright, lad. I'll be here if you need anything."

Niels nodded and walked toward the players. They were standing together in the middle of the pitch, waiting for him.

Things had changed. They were starting to trust him.

Today wasn't just about running a few drills. Niels wanted to keep the team's confidence going and build on the last two wins.

"Alright, guys, listen up!" he called.

The players turned toward him.

"We've shown that we can fight. We've shown that we can win. But two wins aren't enough. Now we need to be consistent.

"We're not just playing for points anymore. We're building a team. A team that can keep improving and maybe, one day, fight for promotion."

Luka Radev, the 17-year-old winger, looked straight at Niels. He was quick, talented, and seemed more confident than most players his age.

Niels trusted Luka, but he wasn't going to treat him differently from the others.

"We're starting with a possession drill," Niels said as he walked around the pitch. "Keep the ball moving. Stay close and talk to each other. When we win it back, move forward quickly. Three touches at most."

The players split into two teams. One side wore orange bibs while the other didn't.

Niels watched from the side, paying attention to everything.

Jamal Osei controlled the midfield and kept the ball moving. Liam McCulloch organized the defense and kept shouting instructions.

But Luka stood out.

He was making quick decisions and finding space at the right time. It almost looked like he knew what was going to happen before everyone else.

"Good one, Luka!" Niels shouted after a nice one-two.

"Jamal, move it quicker! Don't give them time to get comfortable."

"Dev, keep moving. Don't just stand there!"

Niels could feel the difference.

The players weren't simply doing the drills anymore. They were listening to him and trying to follow his ideas.

They were starting to believe in him.

Niels hadn't earned their respect because of his name or experience. He had earned it through the work he put in every day.

The training session included possession drills and tactical work. Niels kept pushing the players to work harder and stay focused.

They worked on quick attacks after winning the ball, pressing high, and dropping back when they needed to defend. Niels had a feeling these things would become very important in football later on, even though he couldn't explain where that knowledge came from.

As training started to finish, the players were tired. Some had their hands on their knees while they tried to catch their breath.

Milan walked over with his hands in his pockets. Rain was still falling lightly on his jacket.

He didn't say anything at first.

He just stood next to Niels and watched the players cool down. The lads were laughing and talking as they walked around the wet pitch.

"You're getting the hang of it," Milan said. "They're listening to you now. That's one of the hardest things."

Niels kept watching the players.

"I'm just trying to keep them focused. Two wins don't mean we're safe. We need to keep going and stay consistent."

Milan nodded.

"Exactly. Tactics are important, but coaching isn't only about formations. You're dealing with people too. That's the difficult part."

Niels looked at the players. Luka was joking around with Dev, while Marko stood nearby wiping the sweat from his face. Marko seemed more confident than he had been the week before.

For the first time, they were starting to look like a proper team instead of just a group of players.

Later that evening, Niels was back in the analysis room. Milan had left him to work on his own.

Rain tapped against the window while Niels watched footage of their next opponent. They had a cup match coming up against a lower-league team, and he wanted to be ready.

He wrote down ideas and studied different ways they could play.

Niels was still an assistant. He was still learning, and Milan was still the main coach.

But things were changing.

He wasn't the same player who had once lost everything after his injury.

Every training session, every decision, and every bit of trust from the players was helping him move forward.

He wasn't the manager yet.

But Niels felt like he was getting closer.
