Chapter 18 - Breaking Wrexham’s Rhythm

Chapter 18: Breaking Wrexham's Rhythm

Saturday, 30 November

The Racecourse Ground

The away dressing room at Wrexham was small and cold. The walls were marked and the paint was peeling in places. The smell of sweat and liniment hung in the air.

Nobody was saying much.

Dev sat on the bench with his boots in his hands. He had already tied and untied his laces a few times. He wasn't fixing anything. He just couldn't sit still.

Luka sat with his headphones on and his eyes shut. Every now and then, his lips moved with the music. One foot kept tapping on the floor.

Reece was quiet. He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and looked down. He didn't have his headphones on. He wasn't moving.

Nate sat at the end of the bench. His hands were tight into fists and his jaw was clenched. He looked angry, but he wasn't saying anything.

The room stayed quiet. The match was getting closer.

Niels stood at the front of the room with his arms folded. He looked calm. Not the kind of calm someone puts on before a big game. He just was.

"Trust what we've trained," he said. His voice was quiet and steady. "Don't chase them. We need to disrupt them. Break their rhythm and make them uncomfortable."

He turned to the whiteboard. There was only one change to the starting lineup. Nate was in.

"Reece, keep the shape. Keep everyone organised. Luka, use the space when their six pushes forward. Dev, don't wait for the perfect pass. If you see it, play it."

Then Niels looked at Nate.

"You're not starting because we're short. You've earned your place. So don't play like you're waiting for someone to tell you that."

Nate nodded once.

It was his first game for the first team.

Luka stood up and clapped his hands once.

"Let's go wreck their party."

They headed towards the tunnel. Their boots hit the concrete with every step. Nobody spoke.

Outside, the Racecourse was already loud. Flags moved above the stands and red smoke drifted through the air. The chanting didn't stop.

The wind was cold and cut straight through their shirts.

Kickoff.

Crawley didn't come to sit back. They pushed forward and looked comfortable on the ball.

Reece kept things organised at the back, giving short instructions whenever someone needed to move. Dev stayed calm under pressure and moved the ball quickly. Luka played a little deeper, which pulled their defensive midfielder away from his position.

Wrexham started strongly. Their fullbacks pushed high and their midfielders went into every tackle. The crowd made things even louder.

Dev was closed down twice. The second time, he managed to turn away from the pressure and sent the ball across to Liam on the other side. The bench didn't react much. Niels just watched and nodded. The move had worked.

He leaned towards the analyst.

"They're putting numbers on our right. Nate needs to watch the counter. Their fullback is leaving space."

12th minute.

Luka dropped deeper and took his marker with him. Dev saw the space and passed to Nate.

Nate took a second, then moved forward.

His first touch was close to his feet. He pushed inside, took another touch to set himself, and shot.

The ball came off cleanly, but the shot was probably a little too early. It curled towards the far post and went just wide, brushing the outside of the net.

The crowd went quiet for a moment. A few people had already started to react before they realised it was going wide.

One of the coaches on the bench smiled.

Luka looked at Niels.

"He's in it now."

Niels nodded.

Wrexham didn't take long to respond. They pushed higher and started pressing with more intensity.

The crosses kept coming. Wrexham won corner after corner, but Crawley managed to deal with them.

23rd minute.

A loose ball fell near the edge of the box. One of the Wrexham players hit it first time.

It struck the bar.

Reece shouted at the defence to get back into position. Liam threw himself in front of the next shot, while Luka ran almost half the pitch to get back and help.

They managed to clear it, but Wrexham were starting to put them under real pressure.

30th minute.

Wrexham attacked down the right again. A quick one-two opened up the space, followed by a low ball across the box.

A Wrexham player met it and finished.

Wrexham 1–0 Crawley.

The crowd went wild. Red smoke rose again and the noise filled the ground.

Niels didn't react.

He stepped towards the players.

"Calm down. We're fine."

He didn't shout, but everyone heard him.

The players nodded and moved back into position. Nobody panicked.

Slowly, Crawley started to find their rhythm again.

Dev began to get more time on the ball. Luka found space between the lines. Nate made another long run, but this time he wasn't looking for a shot. He dragged two defenders with him and then played the ball back to Dev.

The goal hadn't knocked them out of the game. It had just changed the pace.

Half-time.

The dressing room was warm from the showers, but the cold air still came through. Everyone was breathing heavily. Nobody looked away.

Niels waited for a moment before speaking.

"They've been running hard for 35 minutes," he said. "Now make them run some more. Make them chase us."

He stopped in front of Nate.

"You've beaten their fullback a few times. When the chance comes, take it. Don't wait."

Nate nodded straight away.

His hands were relaxed now. His shoulders had dropped.

Second Half

Crawley came back out for the second half looking different. They weren't overconfident. They just looked like they believed they could get back into the game.

51st minute.

Dev found a gap in midfield and played the ball through it. Luka took one touch and lifted it over the defence, into the space behind the fullback.

Nate was already running.

He took it in his stride, pushed past the defender and hit it.

The shot stayed low and went hard towards the bottom corner.

Wrexham 1–1 Crawley.

Nate shouted as he ran away to celebrate. It was his first goal for the first team, and the moment meant more than he could put into words.

The bench was on its feet. Niels smiled and clapped.

"Back in the game."

But there was still plenty of time left.

The game became scrappy. Players were tiring, tackles were coming in harder, and the referee had to keep warning them to calm down.

Crawley stayed focused.

Dev kept looking for passes. Luka continued to find space between the lines. Reece seemed to know where the ball was going before anyone else.

74th minute.

Liam went in for a tackle and got the ball cleanly. Dev picked it up and played it forward.

Luka found Reece near the edge of the box. Reece curled a shot towards the far corner, but it went just wide.

Wrexham were starting to look shaken.

Crawley wanted more.

88th minute.

Dev won the ball high up the pitch. He didn't stop to think about it. He played it wide.

Nate was there.

He ran at the defender, dropped a shoulder and cut inside. Two defenders moved towards him.

He could have taken the shot, but instead he passed to Luka.

Luka was already running and got there just in time.

He hit it low towards the near post.

Goal.

Wrexham 1–2 Crawley.

The bench went crazy. Players and coaches were shouting, laughing and jumping around.

Niels raised both fists before turning back towards the pitch.

"Five more minutes! Hold it!"

Reece headed away a long ball. Liam cleared another one high into the stands. Luka chased the ball into the corner and kept it there for as long as he could.

Then the final whistle went.

They had done it.

Full-time: Wrexham 1–2 Crawley Town.

The win moved Crawley up to 13th in the league table.

After the Match

Back in the dressing room, things were loud.

Nate disappeared under a group of his teammates. Luka grabbed him in a headlock, laughing.

"You're not the new guy anymore. You're one of us."

Dev dropped onto the bench, completely soaked but smiling. He looked happier than he had in weeks.

Reece walked over and gave Nate a quiet fist bump.

Niels finally sat down. He took a deep breath and relaxed for the first time all night.

He didn't need to look at the stats.

He had seen enough.

It wasn't just a win.

It was a new start.
