Chapter 17 - Pawns

I sighed as sleep didn't come to me and left me chasing. As the night wore on, I stayed awake, waiting. Something I'd become accustomed to. Tarnished didn't need sleep, but we welcomed it whenever we could take it. The night wore on, and soon daybreak appeared. I donned my armor and grabbed my sword, and as I walked out of my dorm, I was approached by Glynda.

.

"Ozpin was just asking for you," Glynda spoke as she was using her scroll as a notepad.

"Is he in his office?" I asked her.

"He is," She answered, not looking up from her scroll.

"I'm off then," I said curtly.

.

Glynda looked at me as if I were a different person. Gone was the slightly difficult-to-deal-with person, and now I was the unapproachable, grim one. I didn't care as I still had things to deal with, as things were going to hell faster than the Lands Between could.

As I walked towards Ozpin's office, students and other professors steered clear away from me as I was radiating murderous intent. Well, not really, as it was more of a mild annoyance. It was hard to tell what was going on with me.

Once I entered Ozpin's office, he was waiting for me with his usual cup of coffee. Or was it hot chocolate? I could never remember with him.

.

"What do I owe this visit?" He asked as he was going over paperwork.

"How much have you found out about that woman?" I asked, referring to the one we saw last night from that drunken old man.

"Not much, I'm afraid," He said with a sigh, "All I have received is that a young girl matched her description several years ago. After a fight with her stepmother, she vanished."

"Great," I sighed and sat down in one of his chairs. "Anything else of note?"

"Nothing, I'm afraid. All the leads that I had of her have vanished after she traveled to Mistral." Ozpin told me as he pulled a map from one of his coat pockets.

"Now's the time I wish Blaidd was here," I sighed again, "Tracking her would be a piece of cake. He could track anyone as long as he had a lead."

"I already have the one who sent the photo to track her whereabouts down," Ozpin spoke as he pointed to the map with a circle on it. "In the meantime, I've located another point of interest for you."

"Another Site of Grace?" I asked as I looked at the map.

"No, a rather curious man who calls himself a Misbegotten, by the name of Hweg," Ozpin spoke while I mesmerized the location.

"If that's true, we could have another Tarnished in our arsenal," I spoke as I got ready to depart. "His description?"

.

What came next was the description of Master Hweg, accurate to a T. Once I got the confirmation, I left the office and headed down to the site of Grace to let Melina and Amber know. As I was transported to the Roundtable hold, I found that Melina and Amber were waiting for me. Once I told them that I've located another member of the Roundtable, Amber was ready to go, while Melina was far more composed.

However, before we left, I asked Melina to do something for me, which was to keep an eye out for the mysterious woman. Melina was hurt that she wasn't going; however, she understood that this woman was a possible problem that needed to be dealt with once she was found. After getting ready, Amber and I set off to find Master Hweg.

Once we reached the walls of Vale, Amber and I debated what to use. Would it be better to take a Bullhead, or would it be better to take Torrent? Since it was so close, which was odd to me, we decided to ride Torrent there and back. As I summoned Torrent, Torrent pranced around for a second and then crouched down for Amber to climb aboard. I just shook my head at Torrent's love for Amber. That, and she had trouble climbing onto him.

Once Amber and I were riding Torrent, we set off to find Master Hweg at a rapid pace.

.

Three hours passed, and Torrent's stride still hasn't waned. Soon, we came upon a remote village. The walls around it seemed to keep out the majority of Grimm, but I'd doubt that anything from the Land's Between wouldn't get in. As we came close to the gates, several rifles appeared over the wall, and a voice boomed from a megaphone. Amber, who was expecting something like this, was unfazed. As for me, I may or may not have jumped a bit.

However, as he came to a halt, an old man came to the front of the village gate. Though he was anything but useless. The man was a fighter, and he knew how to handle a bandit or two. And seeing how he hasn't told them to shoot us yet, I could assume that he was the leader of this village.

Amber and I got off Torrent, but I didn't unsummon him just yet. Better to keep that as a trump card to be safe. As the man approached us, Amber took the lead and stepped forward. She introduced herself and me to the old man as Hunters looking for an old friend. The man, who introduced himself as Maron, said that they were welcome if they could prove what we said was true.

Amber and I then pulled out our scrolls and showed him our Hunters' ID. After confirming that they were real, he offered us safe passage into the town.

A/N: Sorry, this is the last chapter of this book. I lost all my notes on this one, and I haven't been able to come to any decent plot for it. I'll leave this unfinished, but not completed. So if I do find notes or figure out a storyline, I'll be able to pick it back up.

That said, if anyone wants to, feel free to adopt this book. All I ask is to let me know.

That's all,

~Hawkin
