Chapter 15 - Lunch with lady Diana

Sophia slipped into the dining hall, scanning the room for a familiar face as the warm scent of roasted chicken and freshly baked bread filled her senses. Instead, her eyes landed on a striking vampiress with piercing eyes, towering over a corking human maid.

The maid, trembling like a leaf, held a tray laden with sandwiches and salads. Lady Diana sneered, her voice dripping with disdain. "Closer, you clumsy thing. I want my lunch served now. And don't think you're worthy of pouring my wine. You should be honored I'm not draining you dry... yet."

Lady Diana's gaze dropped to the maid's wrist, and a wicked glimmered in her eye. "You know what? Drop a bit of your blood into the wine. It'll give it a nice tang."

The maid's eyes widened in terror as Lady Diana pulled out a small, ornate knife from her belt. "Use this," she commanded. The maid hesitated, then pricked her wrist with the knife's tip. A small drop of blood welled up.

Lady Diana's gaze snapped to Sophia, her eyes narrowing. "Ah, the new bride. Welcome to lunch, Sophia. You look... fragile. Come sit with me."

Sophia's instincts screamed to refuse, but Lady Diana's command was laced with an unsettling charm. Sophia hesitated, then took a seat across from Lady Diana. The vampiress's smile grew wider. "I think we'll get along famously, Sophia. After all, we're both here for the same reason... Erik."

Lady Diana leaned in, her voice taking on a venomous tone. "You're just a toy, Sophia. A plaything for Erik to amuse himself with. Once he's tired of you, he'll discard you like yesterday's trash. You're nothing but a weak human, and everyone knows it. I'm the one who's supposed to be sitting in that seat, wearing that title. Not you."

Sophia's cheeks flushed with anger, but she bit her tongue, knowing they were alone and she couldn't afford to react. Lady Diana's eyes sparkled with amusement as she sipped her blood-tinted wine. "And when Azura finds out about this little arrangement, they'll take you back... in pieces, probably."

Lady Diana leaned back, a smug smile on her face. "Enjoy the ride while it lasts, Sophia."

Lady Diana's smile grew wider, her fangs glinging in the dim light. "You're trembling, Sophia. Don't tell me you're finally realizing the gravity of your situation?" She leaned in closer, her voice dripping with malice. "Erik's playing with you, Sophia. He's got a reputation, you know. The prince of darkness, toying with his prey before devouring them whole. You're just the latest snack."

Sophia's eyes dropped to her lap, her hands clenched into fists beneath the table. Lady Diana laughed, a low, husky sound. "Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The great Sophia, brought down by a vampire's charm. It's almost... poetic."

The maid, forgotten in the corner, corked and trembling, finally spoke up, "M-milady, perhaps... perhaps we should-"

Lady Diana's gaze snapped to the maid, silencing her with a single, icy glare. "You. Leave. Now." The maid scurried away, dropping a curtsy as she fled the dining hall.

Lady Diana's attention returned to Sophia, her eyes glining with amusement. "Now, where were we? Ah yes, Erik's little game. You see, Sophia, I've known Erik for centuries. I know how he operates. He'll use you, drain you, and then discard you like yesterday's trash. And there's nothing you can do to stop it."

Sophia's grip on her emotions began to slip, her anger and frustration simmering just below the surface. Lady Diana's words were like venom, seeping into her mind and planting seeds of doubt. She forced herself to remain still, her expression neutral, but her eyes betrayed her, flashing with a hint of fear.

Lady Diana's smile grew, her fangs glinging in the dim light. "You're scared, Sophia. You should be. Erik's not a man to be trifled with, and you're just a plaything to him. A mere mortal, trying to play with fire. You'll get burned, and I'll be here to laugh as you scream."

The sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the hall, and Lady Diana's gaze flicked to the entrance. "Ah, perfect timing. The main course has arrived. And just in time, Sophia. You look like you're about to lose your appetite."

Erik's eyes locked onto Lady Diana, his expression darkening like a storm cloud. "Diana, I think you've said enough," he growled, his voice low and menacing. He stepped forward, his movements fluid and predatory, and positioned himself between Sophia and Lady Diana. "Leave. Now."

Lady Diana's smile faltered, her eyes flashing with anger. "Erik, I-"

"I said, leave," Erik repeated, his voice dripping with authority. "You're not welcome here. Not anymore."

Lady Diana's gaze snapped to Sophia, her eyes narrowing. "This isn't over, Sophia," she hissed, before turning and stalking out of the dining hall.

Erik's gaze followed her, his eyes blazing with intensity. When he turned back to Sophia, his expression softened, and he reached out to gently touch her cheek. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice low and concerned.

Sophia's eyes met his, and for a moment, she felt a spark of connection. But then, she remembered Lady Diana's words, and her expression hardened. "I'm fine," she said, pulling away from his touch.

Erik's eyes narrowed, sensing her withdrawal. "Diana's just trying to get under your skin," he said, his voice reassuring. "Don't let her."

But Sophia's mind was already racing with doubts. Was she just a plaything to Erik? Would he discard her like Lady Diana said? She looked up at him, searching for answers in his eyes. "Erik?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes?" he replied, his gaze locked onto hers.

"Tell me the truth," Sophia said, her voice steady. "What do you want from me?"

Erik's gaze held Sophia's, his eyes searching for a moment before he responded. "I want what's best for you, Sophia," he said, his voice low and smooth. "And what's best for me is having you by my side."

Sophia's eyes dropped, her hands twisting in her lap. A flicker of fear danced in her eyes as she processed his words. "That's...that's not an answer," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Erik's expression didn't change, but his eyes seemed to gleam with a hint of intensity. "It's the only one you'll get, Sophia," he said, his voice firm. "You're my wife, and I'll do what's necessary to protect you. Whether you like it or not."

Sophia's gaze snapped up to his, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and uncertainty. Erik's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. The tension between them was palpable, and Sophia's chest rose and fell with each ragged breath.

Erik's gaze didn't waver. "Do you understand?" he asked, his voice low and commanding.

Sophia's lips parted, but no sound came out. She nodded, her movement barely perceptible. Erik's eyes lingered on hers for a moment before he nodded, his expression unreadable.

Erik's gaze lingered on Sophia's, his eyes burning with an intensity that made her skin prickle. He turned, his movements economical, and took a seat beside her. The chair creaked softly as he settled in.

"You're not eating," he said, his voice low and smooth.

Sophia's gaze dropped to the food in front of her. Her stomach was a knot of tension, but she knew she needed to eat. She picked up her fork, her movements stiff.

Erik's eyes watched her, his gaze unnerving. Sophia's hands trembled as she lifted a bite to her mouth. The flavors exploded on her tongue, but she barely registered them.

The silence between them was oppressive, punctuated only by the sound of their utensils scraping against the plates. Sophia's nerves were on edge, her senses heightened.

Erik's voice cut through the silence, making her jump. "Diana won't bother you again," he said, his tone low and reassuring.

Sophia's gaze flicked to his, searching for truth in his eyes. What she saw there was unreadable.

"Okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Erik's gaze lingered on hers for a moment before he nodded. The meal continued in an uneasy silence, the tension between them thick and heavy.

Erik's words hung in the air, a promise of protection and control. Sophia's eyes dropped to her plate, her appetite lost in the turmoil of her thoughts. The food, once appetizing, now tasted bland and uninteresting.

As they ate, Sophia couldn't shake the feeling that she was trapped in a game she didn't understand. Lady Diana's words echoed in her mind, planting seeds of doubt and fear. Was she just a pawn in Erik's plans?

Ugh, why was she even thinking about this? She was a strong, independent person - or at least, she used to be. When did she start letting other people's opinions get under her skin? She was better than this.

Sophia's grip on her fork tightened, her knuckles white with tension. She was letting Lady Diana get to her, and that was exactly what the vampiress wanted. She needed to snap out of it.

With newfound determination, Sophia lifted her gaze to Erik's. "I'm fine," she said, her voice firmer now. "Let's just eat."

Erik's eyes watched her, his gaze searching. For a moment, Sophia worried she'd overplayed her hand, but then he nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "As you wish," he said, his voice low and smooth.

The tension in the room dissipated slightly, and Sophia focused on her food, trying to push the doubts and fears to the back of her mind. She was stronger than this. She just needed to remember that.
