Resting on the workbench was the hollow sphere Amir had recovered from the ruins on Gudrian.
After testing it, he had already confirmed that it was a kind of energy accumulator.
The total amount of energy contained inside it was terrifying.
Amir had estimated that if he used it as the Traveler's power source, even running the ship at maximum output, it would still take many days to drain.
That delighted him.
More importantly, by using an energy converter, he could stimulate it with other forms of energy and recharge the accumulator once again.
In other words, it was an enormous battery with an incredible capacity, containing a vast amount of highly unusual energy.
Amir was not sure whether it could replace standard power systems as the Traveler's main energy source, so to avoid any accidents, he had not tried it directly.
Just as he was about to shelve it once more, he saw the enormous kyber crystal he had brought back from Ilum.
A bold idea appeared in his mind.
He had already completely mastered the operating principles of a lightsaber. Turning such a gigantic kyber crystal into a lightsaber was not impossible, but the energy consumption would increase exponentially, making it hopelessly impractical.
And there was no one who could swing around a lightsaber made from a crystal that huge anyway.
Unless Amir first found a place to build a giant mech, then paired it with a matching oversized lightsaber.
But that would not be worth it. The agility that defined a Jedi would be completely abandoned, and a giant mech would just become a target under concentrated heavy fire, not to mention against another lightsaber wielder.
Still, while studying lightsabers, Amir had discovered something interesting.
A lightsaber's high-energy particle beam was contained, forming a high-energy blade through a closed loop linked by positive and negative poles. But what if that energy were connected in a different way and fired outward in a one-way discharge? What kind of effect would that produce?
Amir knew the Death Star's primary systems depended on kyber crystals. So if he used his own kyber crystal, might he be able to create a powerful beam cannon with a similar nature to the Death Star's weapon, only weakened countless times over?
The most important problem, the energy source, could be solved completely by that spherical energy accumulator. That meant the only thing left was the technical side.
Amir found the idea deeply interesting and moved to act on it immediately.
The principle behind the design was not difficult. He spent two days drawing up a large number of blueprints, then made a trip to Mos Eisley, bought a huge pile of components, and began experimenting right away.
Millisyn and 32 continued their usual training. These days, however, they had gained a new form of entertainment: listening to the occasional thunderous explosion coming from the nearby valley.
By midday, a soot-streaked Amir came back and sat down in front of them helplessly.
"What kind of strange thing are you researching now, Amir?" Obi-Wan asked.
"A giant beam cannon built around a kyber crystal. Got any ideas, Master?" Amir had already tried many methods without success, and the remaining approaches were beyond what his crude setup could accomplish.
"I remember that in the Jedi Temple there was once a portable laser cannon that could use a lightsaber as its power source. It was an artifact excavated from some ancient ruin. Its power was extraordinary—it could melt everything it touched. Its only flaw was that after being used a few times, the lightsaber powering it would melt because it could not endure the load."
"Using a lightsaber as the energy source..." Amir fell into thought again. Many things connected to the Force simply could not be fully explained through conventional science, so he only treated it as a point of reference.
But it also gave him a completely new line of thought.
He rushed back to work and kept at it for the entire day. Along the way, he discovered some interesting patterns regarding kyber crystals, and after constant experimentation, his thinking gradually became clearer.
Early the next morning, he called Kahalman.
Far away on the Eternal Ark Space Station, an Ardennian was sitting at his desk, idly fiddling with all four arms when his communicator suddenly rang. The holographic projection displayed Amir's face.
The moment he saw it, Kahalman straightened up and smiled.
"Amir, what made you think to contact me? Don't tell me you've got another interesting design?"
Amir feigned surprise. "How did you know I was contacting you because of that? You didn't put a camera on my Traveler, did you?"
"Hahaha, of course not. Come on, tell me—what new idea do you have?"
Amir had discussed a number of mechanical problems with Kahalman before, and the two of them shared many similar ideas. Kahalman had also sincerely invited Amir to visit more often.
Now, the timing was perfect.
"How's Eternal Ark? I'd rather come over and discuss it with you in detail in person," Amir said. He needed Kahalman's resources and equipment.
"Of course it's fine. And when you come, remember to bring Millisyn and 32. One of my guards—what's his name again?—keeps mentioning Millisyn. And I've got some new upgrades for 32 as well!"
"Good. We'll head there as soon as possible."
Amir was getting impatient himself. He wanted to test his ideas immediately.
After telling Millisyn and 32, both of them were thrilled. Millisyn still had that card she could use to eat for free, while 32 held a great deal of affection for Kahalman, who had saved him.
Amir suddenly realized that out of all of them, he himself had become the most distracted apprentice. Even though he still insisted on several hours of training every day, the time he spent on machinery had clearly grown to far exceed the time he spent on the Force.
And yet even so, his improvement was still astonishingly fast. In sparring with Obi-Wan now, he could already hold his own without falling behind.
The speed of that progress left even Qui-Gon marveling.
From Amir's own perspective, he had noticed that his sensitivity to the Force in particular had grown tremendously without him even fully realizing it. It seemed to be a gradual unlocking process, as though the ability had always belonged to him but had not been fully accessible before, and now, through time and training, more and more of it was opening up.
Amir enjoyed the process of becoming stronger immensely, and he also found it reassuring.
Because this era would not allow him the luxury of growing slowly.
He wanted to become stronger, faster.
That included the weapons and machines he was researching. Most of them were things he believed would truly matter.
By now, the Death Star should already have had its framework completed and entered the stage of constant refinement. In less than ten years, that evil weapon capable of effortlessly destroying an entire planet would be fully realized. Amir had already made up his mind to stop it before that could happen.
He had to prevent peaceful, beautiful Alderaan and its billions of people from turning into ash.
This time, in seeking deeper cooperation with Kahalman, who already worked closely with Ahsoka, Amir carried that intention with him.
His smart combat backpacks, some of his exoskeleton designs and ideas, his concepts involving nanotechnology, and the new kyber-based weapon he was currently testing—
All of it could be shared with the people of the resistance. With Kahalman's resources, once any of it entered mass production, the impact on the war would be enormous.
Take the smart combat backpack, for example. The only truly rare part was the intelligent software Amir had written. Everything else was made from the most common components imaginable and could be mass-produced with ease. If every soldier carried one, then in any ground engagement with Imperial troops, the Alliance side would gain a tremendous advantage.
And following Amir's line of thought, kyber crystals could even be developed into new classes of weapons and mounted as the main guns of capital ships.
At that point, enemy deflector shields would be little better than paper in front of them.
