Chapter 14 - The Pull You Can’t Fight

POV: Katie, Liam, Lucian

---

Katie

The forest felt different as Liam and I walked back toward the pack house.

The usual nighttime sounds were there—the rustle of leaves, the distant chirp of crickets—but something about the air felt tense, like the woods themselves were paying attention.

My hand was still in Liam's.

His fingers were warm and steady around mine, grounding me after everything that had happened tonight. Every now and then his thumb brushed lightly over the back of my hand, sending a strange little spark up my arm.

The mate bond.

Rachel stretched lazily inside my mind.

See? I told you the big scary king wasn't so scary.

I tried not to smile.

"He's literally right next to us," I muttered under my breath.

Liam glanced down at me, brows pulling together slightly.

"Did you say something?"

"No," I said quickly.

Rachel laughed, clearly entertained.

Smooth. Very smooth.

My face warmed, and I looked away, pretending to focus on the path ahead.

Up ahead, the soft golden lights of the pack house glowed through the trees. Just seeing them made some of the tension drain from my shoulders.

This week had been… a lot.

My wolf awakening. The attacks. Being chased through the woods. Marissa causing problems every five seconds.

And then… that night.

The blood.

The darkness.

The feeling of something waking up inside me.

I tightened my grip on Liam's hand without thinking.

For a second… it almost felt normal.

And then—

The air shifted.

Not dramatically.

Subtly.

But enough.

My steps slowed.

Rachel went still instantly.

My heartbeat picked up.

Fast.

Too fast.

"What is it?" Liam asked, his voice lowering as his body tensed beside me.

"I don't know…" I whispered.

But deep down?

I think I did?

And then he stepped out of the shadows.

---

Liam

Lucian.

Of course it was him.

The second I saw him, every instinct I had snapped into place.

Danger.

Not immediate.

But real.

I shifted slightly in front of Katie without thinking, my body angling toward him while keeping her just behind my shoulder.

"You again," I said, my voice low, controlled.

Lucian's gaze flicked to me for half a second.

Unbothered.

Like I wasn't even worth his attention.

Then he looked at her.

And that's when I felt it.

That shift.

That focus.

Like the entire world had narrowed down to Katie.

My jaw tightened.

I didn't like that.

Not even a little.

There was something about the way he looked at her that felt… personal.

Too personal.

Like this wasn't just curiosity.

Like this wasn't the first time he'd felt her presence.

"She's not someone you get to just walk up to," I said, my tone sharpening slightly.

But he didn't respond to me.

Didn't even acknowledge it.

His attention stayed exactly where it was.

On her.

And for some reason…

That bothered me more than anything he could've said.

---

Katie

I couldn't breathe.

Not because I was scared.

Because something inside me recognized him.

That night flashed through my mind in pieces.

The blood against my lips.

The way everything had gone dark.

The feeling of something breaking open inside me.

And now—

Standing in front of him again—

That same feeling stirred.

Stronger this time.

"Lucian…" I said softly, the name slipping out before I could stop it.

His expression shifted slightly.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"It seems our first meeting was… cut short," he said.

Liam's voice cut in, sharper now. "You've said enough."

Lucian ignored him completely.

"My name is Lucian," he said, his voice quieter now, directed only at me. "And you…"

He paused.

Like he was trying to understand something.

Or confirm it.

And suddenly I felt exposed.

Like he could see something in me I couldn't even see myself.

---

Lucian

There it was again.

That presence.

The same one I had felt before she collapsed.

Only now…

It was awake.

Not fully revealed.

But no longer hidden.

Something ancient stirred beneath the surface of her soul.

Familiar in a way that didn't make sense.

And yet—

Undeniable.

When her eyes met mine, it responded.

Not to her.

To me.

"You survived," I said quietly.

But that wasn't what I meant.

Not entirely.

What I meant was—

You're still here.

---

Katie

Something inside me snapped.

Not painfully.

But completely.

Like a door I didn't know existed had just been thrown open.

And suddenly—

I wasn't alone anymore.

A presence surged forward.

Strong.

Confident.

Certain.

Mine.

"Katie?" Liam's voice sounded distant now.

Too far away.

I tried to hold on.

Tried to stay in control.

"I'm fine—"

But the words never finished.

Because I wasn't.

And I couldn't stop it.

---

Liam

I knew something was wrong the second she went still.

The second her grip on my hand loosened.

"Katie?"

No response.

Her eyes—

They weren't the same.

They glowed an amethyst purple.

And then—

She moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

One second she was beside me.

The next—

She was across the space.

In his arms.

My chest tightened instantly.

"What the hell—"

---

Katie (Daya Vampire )

Freedom.

That was the first thing I felt.

Not confusion.

Not hesitation.

Freedom.

My body moved on instinct, closing the distance in less than a heartbeat.

My hands gripped his shirt as I collided into him.

He caught me easily.

Like he expected it.

Like he'd been waiting.

His hands settled at my waist, firm and steady.

"There you are," he murmured.

A slow smile spread across my lips.

Finally.

---

Lucian

There it was.

That presence.

The one I had felt before.

Not the girl.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Awake again.

Drawn to me just as strongly as I was to it.

Real.

Undeniable.

My grip on her tightened slightly—not to restrain, but to ground.

So it wasn't just memory.

It wasn't just instinct.

It was real.

---

Liam

No.

Absolutely not.

I stepped forward, anger flashing sharp and fast.

"What the hell is this?"

She—Katie—was pressed against him like she belonged there.

Like it was natural.

And something about that felt very, very wrong.

"What did you do to her?" I demanded.

Lucian's gaze finally shifted to me.

Cold.

Calm.

"I did nothing," he said. "This is her."

"No," I snapped. "It's not."

But even as I said it…

I wasn't completely sure.

---

Katie (Daya Vampire)

I glanced at the other one.

Annoying.

Loud.

"He's loud," I muttered.

Lucian's lips twitched slightly.

"You get used to it," he replied.

I smirked faintly, my fingers tracing lightly over his chest.

Familiar.

Comforting.

"I missed you," I said softly.

His eyes darkened just slightly.

"I know."

.... I missed you too.

---

Liam

I felt it then.

The bond.

Not mine.

Theirs.

Different.

But just as real.

And suddenly…

Everything started to make a little more sense.

Not in a way I liked.

But in a way I couldn't ignore.

---

Katie

I slammed back into my body like I'd been thrown.

"What—" I gasped, stumbling backward.

Liam caught me instantly.

"I've got you," he said, his voice tight.

I blinked, trying to focus.

Trying to breathe.

Trying to understand what just happened.

And then I saw him.

Lucian.

Watching me.

Like he already knew.

"What… was that?" I whispered.

His voice was quiet.

"That," he said, "is only the beginning of what you are."

---

The forest went still again.

But this time…

Nothing about it felt safe.

Something had changed.

And there was no going back.
