Three days later.
The forest had not changed.
Snow still covered everything in soft white powder. The tall spruce trees still stood like silent guardians over the mountain, their branches bending beneath layers of frost.
But something had changed.
Laughter echoed between the trees.
A boy's laughter.
And the playful growl of a wolf.
Adam collapsed backward into the snow, kicking his legs as he laughed breathlessly.
"That doesn't count!"
The large white wolf standing over him tilted her head.
"Yes it does."
Her voice carried a hint of smug satisfaction.
"You fell."
Adam groaned dramatically.
"I slipped!"
"You fell."
"I slipped."
"You fell."
Adam threw a handful of snow toward her.
Luna jumped sideways easily as the powder scattered harmlessly across the ground.
Her amber eyes sparkled.
Three days.
It had only been three days.
But something had shifted inside her.
The girl raised to be a weapon still existed somewhere beneath the surface. That instinct remained sharp, disciplined, always watching.
But beneath that conditioning lived something older.
Something simpler.
A child.
And for the first time in her life that child was allowed to exist without consequences.
Adam pushed himself upright again, brushing snow from his oversized fur coat.
"You know," he said with a teasing grin, "Weren't you supposed to be kill me?"
Luna's ears twitched slightly.
"Yes."
Adam pointed at her dramatically.
"And yet here we are."
He gestured at the snow battlefield around them.
"Friends."
Luna snorted.
"We are not friends."
Adam raised an eyebrow.
"You came back."
"…that doesn't mean anything."
"You helped me catch a turkey yesterday."
"That was strategy."
"You laughed."
Luna stiffened slightly.
Adam crossed his arms.
"Friends."
Luna looked away.
"…temporary alliance."
Adam grinned victoriously.
"Friends."
Luna huffed.
But there was no real heat behind it.
Adam leaned back against a tree trunk, looking thoughtful.
"You know," he said slowly, "I've been wondering something."
Luna glanced at him cautiously.
"What?"
"If your mom sent you to kill me…"
He tilted his head.
"…why? What did i do?"
Luna blinked.
That question again.
The same one she couldn't answer three days ago.
Adam watched her quietly.
"Do you know?"
Luna shrugged.
"Maybe she wants world domination."
Adam blinked.
"…seriously?"
Luna lifted a paw slightly.
"Who knows?"
Adam stared at her for a moment.
Then burst out laughing again.
"You're weird."
Luna tilted her head.
"You are stupid."
Adam grinned.
"Maybe."
But Luna's mind drifted somewhere else.
The memory surfaced suddenly.
A different room.
A different night.
Luna standing silently on polished stone floors.
Her head lowered respectfully.
Across from her stood a woman.
Her mother.
Luna could never clearly remember her face.
In every memory it remained blurred, distant.
Because Luna had never dared to look up.
"Have you executed the target?"
The voice was calm.
Elegant.
Cold.
Luna swallowed.
"…not yet."
A pause.
"I haven't found an opening yet."
Silence filled the room for several seconds.
Then the woman smiled.
Luna couldn't see it.
But she felt it.
Her mother always knew.
"I see."
Another quiet pause.
"Change of plans."
Luna stiffened slightly.
Her mother's voice softened.
"You will continue interacting with the boy."
Luna blinked.
"…interacting?"
"Yes."
Her mother's voice held faint amusement.
"Observe him. Learn from him. And tomorrow…"
A pause.
"You will spend the night with him."
Luna frowned slightly.
"Tomorrow is the full moon."
The woman's smile deepened.
"Tell him your mother does not want you home."
The memory faded as the cold forest returned.
Adam was still watching her curiously.
"You spaced out," he said.
Luna blinked.
"…thinking."
"About world domination?"
"Maybe."
Adam laughed again.
After a moment Luna spoke quietly.
"My mom doesn't want me to go home tonight."
Adam frowned.
"Why?"
"She said I should stay away."
Adam's expression immediately darkened.
"That's not fair."
Luna shrugged.
"It's normal."
Adam shook his head firmly.
"No it's not."
He stood up and brushed snow from his coat.
"You can stay with me though."
Luna blinked.
"…what?"
Adam shrugged casually.
"Simple." He began matter of factly. "You stay here tonight then we hunt again tomorrow. And gramps doesn't have to know."
Luna stared at him.
"…you're very stupid."
Adam grinned. "Maybe."
Luna let out a soft chuckle.
"It must be cool though." Adam began
Luna tilted his head. "What?"
"To have a mom." Adam's smile faded as he looked down at the snow for a moment.
"My mom died about month ago."
Luna froze.
Adam continued quietly.
"Dad says she was killed."
"But he doesn't talk about it."
"Ever since then we've been moving around."
He kicked lightly at the snow.
"Now we're leaving this place too."
Silence settled between them.
Luna hesitated.
She rarely comforted anyone.
No one had ever taught her how.
But something about Adam's expression made her step closer.
Awkwardly.
She nudged his shoulder with her nose.
Adam blinked.
Then smiled weakly.
"Thanks."
But Luna's eyes flickered with something strange.
Something almost guilty.
Later that evening the sky darkened as the two of them returned toward the house.
Halfway there Luna suddenly stopped.
"Wait."
Adam turned.
"What?"
"Did you tell your grandfather about me?"
Adam's eyes widened.
"Of course not."
"Why not?"
He scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
"…he wouldn't take it well."
Luna tilted her head.
"He's scared of wolves?"
"Werewolves."
Adam rolled his eyes.
"My dad and grandpa have been paranoid about them. They think every wolf in the forest is secretly a monster out to get us."
Luna remained silent.
Adam shrugged.
"Which is crazy."
"My mom was a werewolf."
Luna's ears twitched. "…I see."
Adam nodded casually.
"Yeah."
"That's why I'm not scared of you."
He smiled again.
"Werewolves are cool."
That night Adam hid Luna in the barn.
The upper loft was warm with hay and the quiet sounds of sleeping animals.
Adam brought blankets.
Pillows.
And several of his oversized coats.
He told his grandfather the animals were cold.
The old man grumbled but didn't bother to question it.
Eventually Luna transformed back into her human form.
The white fur receded.
Her body shrank.
Moments later a small girl sat nervously in the hay.
Adam stared.
He had expected something impressive.
Something fierce.
What he got instead was…
"…you're tiny."
Luna glared at him while pulling one of the coats around herself.
"I am not tiny."
Adam scratched his cheek awkwardly.
"…you're cute."
Luna froze.
Then turned bright red.
"Shut up."
Adam laughed softly.
They spent hours playing simple games.
Adam taught her things she had never experienced before.
Clapping games.
Guessing games.
Little puzzles made from sticks and stones.
Luna was terrible at all of them.
But Adam never mocked her.
He just smiled.
Patiently teaching her again.
And again.
Eventually the cold began creeping through the barn.
Adam shivered slightly.
Luna noticed immediately.
Without thinking she moved closer and wrapped her arms around him.
Her body radiated warmth.
Werewolf heat.
Adam relaxed instantly.
"…whoa."
"You're like a heater."
Luna huffed.
"Yeah kinda..." she admitted embarrassingly, "We're warmer than normal people."
Eventually they fell asleep together in the hay.
But hours later Luna woke suddenly.
Pain rippled through her body.
Her breathing quickened.
Adam stirred beside her.
"Luna?"
She backed away quickly.
"Go."
Adam blinked sleepily.
"What?"
"Leave!"
Her voice trembled.
"I'm transforming."
Adam sat up.
"What?"
"I can't control it."
"Adam go."
He stood up instead.
"Maybe I can help."
"NO!"
Too late.
Her bones cracked violently.
Her body expanded.
The wolf erupted from within her.
The animals in the barn panicked instantly.
Horses kicked.
Chickens screamed.
The massive white wolf landed on the barn floor.
Adam stared.
"Luna?"
But Luna was gone and only the wolf remained. Cold predatory eyes glared at its prey under the full moon
It lunged.
Adam hit the ground hard.
His head slammed against the wood.
Stars exploded across his vision, as his nose bled.
A claw pierced his chest.
Blood spilled across the floor.
The wolf's jaws lowered toward his neck.
Inside her own mind Luna screamed.
But she was only a passenger.
Then—
"HEY!"
A gunshot exploded.
Pain tore through her side.
Another shot followed.
The wolf recoiled.
Standing in the barn doorway was the old man.
Rifle raised.
Luna fled into the forest.
Her white fur stained red with blood.
Both hers and Adam's.
She never saw him again.
For years Luna believed she had completed the mission.
Her mother had been proud... Well as proud as she was when it came to her daughter being a killer.
But something lingered.
A ghost.
Not Adam's but rather, the memory of him.
His laughter.
His kindness.
His smile.
She had never wanted him to die.
The memory faded.
The dungeon returned.
Adam sat silently in his chains.
Luna stood nearby with her arms crossed.
"…the first day you showed up at school," she said quietly, "it was like the ghost haunting me disappeared."
Adam looked at her.
"I kept watching you."
"Trying to figure out if you were the same boy." she paused, weighing the next words carefully. "You were the first person to look at a monster and see a person... You weren't scared of me."
Silence filled the dungeon.
Finally Adam spoke.
"…I don't know what to say."
He looked down slightly.
"I don't remember any of that. I think the concussion wiped a lot of my memory from that time."
Luna nodded.
"That makes sense."
She turned away slightly.
Her cheeks faintly pink.
"You don't have to say anything."
Adam looked up at her.
Luna avoided his gaze.
"The least you can do…"
She paused.
"…is stay alive."
The dungeon fell silent again.
But this time…
The silence felt different.
Hopeful.
