Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 : Shadows Between Us

The late evening breeze carried the scent of cherry blossoms through Hikari's room as she sat at her desk, her textbooks spread out in front of her. Exams loomed on the horizon, and her focus was unwavering—at least, until her phone buzzed for the third time in a minute.

Shin: "Hey, come outside."

Shin: "I'm waiting."

Shin: "If you don't come out, I'm climbing through the window."

Hikari sighed, placing her pen down. She walked to the window and peeked out, only to see Shin grinning up at her from the garden below. His messy black hair caught the moonlight, and his lopsided smile was both charming and infuriating.

"You're impossible," she muttered, opening the window.

"I missed you," he said, his voice warm. "Can we talk?"

Shin's persistence was undeniable. Within moments, they were sitting on a bench in the garden, the stars twinkling above them. Hikari crossed her arms, half-annoyed, half-amused.

"You know I need to study," she began.

"I know," Shin replied, leaning back casually. "But there's something I need to say."

His tone shifted, growing serious, and Hikari's irritation faded. She turned to him, her dark eyes searching his face.

"What is it?"

Shin hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "We've been together for so long, Hikari. You mean everything to me, and I… I want us to take the next step."

Hikari's cheeks flushed, her heart racing. "Shin… this isn't the time. Exams are important, and I can't afford to be distracted."

"It's not about distraction," he said softly, taking her hand. "It's about us. I want to show you how much you mean to me."

They talked for what felt like hours, the night wrapping around them like a cocoon. Shin's words were sincere, filled with love and vulnerability. Slowly, Hikari's walls began to crumble. She trusted him—more than anyone else.

"Okay," she whispered eventually, her voice barely audible. "But… only if we're careful."

Shin's smile was radiant, and he pulled her into a gentle embrace. "I promise."

Back in her room, the air was charged with nervous excitement. Shin held her hand, guiding her with patience and care. They laughed softly, sharing stories and memories, easing the tension between them.

The intimacy they shared wasn't rushed or overwhelming. It was tender and filled with love, a moment that felt like the culmination of their bond. Hikari's heart swelled as she realized how deeply she cared for him, how safe he made her feel.

But just as she was beginning to let go of her fears, a shadow of doubt crept into her mind.

"Shin," she murmured, pulling back slightly. "You're sure you're prepared? You said—"

"I've got it under control," he interrupted, his tone reassuring.

Hikari wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that everything would be okay. She pushed the doubts aside, focusing on the warmth of the moment.

As the night wore on, Hikari's happiness was replaced by a gnawing feeling she couldn't ignore. Something about Shin's confidence felt off.

When she stepped away briefly, her eyes fell on his bag, partially unzipped. A glimpse of its contents made her heart stop. There was nothing inside—no sign of the protection he had promised.

Her hands trembled as she confronted him. "Shin, what is this?"

His face paled, guilt flashing in his eyes. "Hikari, listen—"

"You lied to me," she said, her voice breaking. The betrayal cut deeper than she thought possible.

"I didn't think it mattered," he began, but she shook her head, stepping back.

"It matters to me!" she cried. "How could you do this?"

The night ended in silence, the once-bright connection between them fractured. Hikari sat alone in her room, staring at the stars. She had trusted Shin, believed in him, and he had let her down.

As dawn approached, she resolved to focus on herself. Love could wait. Trust, once broken, was not so easily mended.
