Chapter 574 - Chapter 574: Who is the Prey?

"Based on the signals we've simulated, the target will undoubtedly believe a symbiote is contacting them. Thanks to Agent Venom's assistance, we can send legitimate communication data instead of garbled noise."

Simmons, acting as the biological expert, explained the mechanics of the device. "According to our previous analysis of symbiotes, the recipient can perceive an approximate broadcast location. So, as long as the target provides a response, we can have Agent Venom hunt them down immediately."

"A trap."

Having returned to the safe house, Ward was quick to grasp the concept as he contemplated the device. Meanwhile, Skye continued hacking into surveillance feeds across New York. While using S.H.I.E.L.D.'s supercomputer to cross-reference facial data of deceased prisoners against pedestrians, she couldn't help but ask a question.

"Why are we solving this ourselves?"

Everyone turned to look at Skye.

"I mean... we've already confirmed that a symbiote is behind this, right? Why don't we just tell the Avengers and let them handle it? Especially since the last symbiote crisis that blanketed all of Manhattan was resolved by them. Why are we taking this onto our own shoulders?"

"Because problems that S.H.I.E.L.D. can solve should not be handed over to the Avengers," Coulson said as he walked in, offering a brief explanation before turning to Fitz, who was monitoring the signal source. "Fitz, have you synchronized positions with Agent Venom?"

"Uh, yes, it's constantly syncing. We're further narrowing down the location—we've been at it this whole time. We can see the subject's movement trajectory on the map right now..."

Fitz overlaid the signal map onto a virtual projection of the city. Everyone stood up and gathered around the rapidly moving signal source, thinking to themselves that this thing was moving incredibly fast.

"His movement speed is approaching forty meters per second. That's fast even for a superhuman, excluding speedsters like Quicksilver. That one behind him is Agent Venom; he's in pursuit."

After listening to Fitz, Skye tilted her head, watching the target's seemingly erratic movement path. Suddenly, she looked at Simmons. "Is it getting closer to us?"

"Don't worry. Although the field reports suggest it isn't afraid of high temperatures and possibly immune to sonic waves, we have force field projection devices around the perimeter. Even a molecular organism like a symbiote won't be able to get close easily."

Just as Simmons finished speaking, the power in the safe house flickered for a moment before the backup generators kicked in to restore electricity. Coulson scanned the room and suddenly questioned Fitz. "If we're running solely on backup power, how long can the shields hold?"

"Fifteen minutes... that should be enough time for Agent Venom to arrive. If not, we can always notify Spider-Man."

But things were seemingly... not that simple.

Skye suddenly screamed. Everyone looked at her computer screen; the surveillance footage showed a creature appearing near the safe house. The monster was undoubtedly a symbiote, but it looked entirely non-humanoid. It hunched its body, yet it still stood over two point two meters tall. Red, viscous biomass shot through with black impurities flowed across its form.

Its tall stature was paired with a body so gaunt it was barely humanoid; it looked like a skeletal frame draped in a layer of bloody skin. From the ribs down, the only thing connecting to its lower body was a blood-red spinal column. Its limbs were terrifyingly slender, with arms and legs exceeding one point five meters in length, and each of its ten fingers was twenty to thirty centimeters thick.

Then there were its eyes. Unlike the relatively regular shapes seen on Venom or Anti-Venom, its white eyes were surrounded by constantly twisting and deforming biomass. It looked far more unstable, more fragile, as if the eyes could only form a rough outline that was being destroyed and reconstructed at every second.

Even more terrifying was its current state. Because the building's power had been cut, the elevators were theoretically out of service, but it was pulling itself bit by bit out of the elevator doors. Bright red, blood-like membranes were being dragged through the gap in the doors by the monster. The parts that were pulled out didn't fully reintegrate into its body; instead, they turned into thin, streamer-like tendrils floating around its limbs.

"So this is the killer we've been looking for... purely based on appearance, he's considered ugly even by symbiote standards." After Ward offered his brief critique, he decisively flipped a switch, causing Fitz to jump. "Why are you wasting power?!"

"Testing to see if this guy actually has a weakness. Besides, reinforcements are almost here."

As Ward spoke, he watched flames spray onto the creature, but the red symbiote remained unharmed. Instead, it let out a happy, rasping laugh. Next came a sonic attack, which also proved useless.

Having confirmed their location, the creature began attempting to attack the safe house door, only to be promptly blocked by the protective force field.

Noticing this, the enemy tilted its head as if thinking, and then quickly produced a solution. He opened his mouth toward the door and unleashed a horrific, bone-chilling shriek. Fitz watched the power levels drop rapidly, feeling a sense of disbelief.

A symbiote that actually used sonic waves to attack?

"Stop right there, villain! Whatever you're planning, it ends now!"

The tightly shut elevator doors were forced open, and Agent Venom stepped out with an air of righteousness. He looked at the enemy before him, only to find that the creature seemed even happier upon seeing him.

"Hello, Father. I am Carnage."

Upon hearing this, Flash couldn't help but cry out in surprise, "Father?!"

Venom, being asked the same question, was equally bewildered.

[I am quite certain this is not my child. Are you?]

"I'm only sixteen!"

[For an American, being a father at sixteen seems fairly reasonable.]

"It's not reasonable for me, and I can't give birth to a symbiote."

Carnage unleashed a piercing shriek at Agent Venom, causing Venom's form to become slightly unstable. However, sonic waves of this caliber were no longer a fatal threat. Coordinating with Flash, Venom used symbiote tendrils from his back to operate four weapons simultaneously, while his hands transformed into blades aimed at the Carnage before him.

Carnage's shriek did not cease. He manifested even larger and sharper blades, and those streamer-like tendrils transformed into dozens of jagged edges.

Seeing this, Flash couldn't help but remark.

"I think he's even more impressive than you."

[Villains are generally more impressive than heroes. It doesn't stop them from being defeated in the end.]
